Book excerpt: This study investigated the change in sophomore reading scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test after the implementation of an academic vocabulary program and the change in teacher knowledge and professional practice after a program of staff development in academic vocabulary. The purpose was to determine the impact of the professional development on student reading performance. The study analyzed student data from 2008 and 2009 gathered from the Florida Department of Education, and teacher data collected from a survey used as a pretest/posttest. Variables used in the analysis of student data included demographic subgroups of white, African-American, and Hispanic students and students with disabilities, English language learners, and economically disadvantaged students. Teacher variables used were years of teaching experience and curriculum area. Both an ANCOVA and a multiple logistical regression were used to analyze change in student reading performance. Student reading score performance dropped for subgroups and overall. Several intervening variables could explain the downward change: budget cuts resulting in a change in instructional day from six to seven-period day with loss of instructional time, reduction in number of teachers, increase in student population, and change in start time for school day (from 7:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). An ANOVA and independent t-test were used to analyze teacher pretest/posttest data. The data indicated a positive change in teacher knowledge and instructional practice, though not statistically significant. It should not be concluded from the reading scores that the program of academic vocabulary was not successful, but rather that vocabulary instruction is only one of the essential components of any plan to improve secondary student reading performance. Further research should be conducted to replicate this study during a time period without intervening variables experienced during the span of this study. Additionally, students should be matched to their teachers to examine the relationship between individual teacher and student performance. This study should be replicated in a high school with different demographics and different level of student achievement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of four instructional methods - context clues, definition, elaboration technique, or word parts and word families- on the vocabulary growth and acquisition of adults enrolled in a community college developmental reading course. The study investigated whether performance in any or all of the four instructional methods was moderated by age or language. Seventy-three respondents participated in the study. Participants were enrolled in one of five sections of College Reading Preparatory II (REA0002) offered in the Spring of 2009 at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida. All five sections of REA0002 were taught by the same professor, a tenured faculty member, chair of the developmental reading department and Associate Professor of Developmental Reading at Indian River State College. The instruction and tests in all five sections of REA0002 were consistent with the research design which insured continuity and consistency in the use of the four instructional methods. All participants received the same treatment and quizzes. During the course of the study, participants first received a pretest, then the treatment or instruction, followed by an instructional quiz, and a delayed post-test was administered at the end of the study. An analysis of the data, which included the pretest, instructional quizzes with four quizzes independently and then combined for an aggregate score for an immediate post-test, and the delayed post-test, yielded mixed results. The four instructional quizzes independently showed definition instruction to have the highest positive impact on student learning. In a measure of gains from pretest to instructional quizzes immediately after treatment, significant improvement in student learning was found only with word parts instruction. In a measure of performance from pretest to immediate post-test (aggregate score of instructional quizzes) there was a significant gain in students' vocabulary competence, and from pretest to delayed post-test there was a significant decrement in students' vocabulary competence. Age and language moderated vocabulary competence. Further tests of equivalency were mixed and should be interpreted cautiously, as there were a very small number of students in the group of 25 years or older and non-native English speakers.

The purpose of this study was to further examine the effectiveness of specific methods of vocabulary instruction, definitional and morphemic, as measured by reading achievement on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. This research study focused on 5 suburban classrooms in the Midwest, three teaching definitional methods and two teaching morphemic methods. The data were analyzed using a 2X 2 ANOVA to determine which method had the most effect on reading achievement, definitional or morphemic. The analyses revealed that there is a significant effect of method of vocabulary instruction on reading achievement. The definitional instruction group showed more growth from fall 2014 to spring 2015; however, the morphemic instruction group experienced greater achievement. Teachers self-reported incorporating other methods of reading and vocabulary instruction into literacy instruction, as well as multiple opportunities to engage in vocabulary discussion and activities related to word lists and/or morphemes studied. Overall, students' reading achievement scores benefited from vocabulary instruction.

Book excerpt: This study was an initial attempt to examine the assumption of a relationship between the subcomponent of Academic Language, Academic Vocabulary, and student and teacher knowledge as well as instruction and assessment in the fourth grade. To help investigate the researcher0́9s claims, the study also evaluated the effectiveness of an independent vocabulary program. Coupled with a comprehensive literature review, this study utilized both qualitative and quantitative research. The researcher analyzed the use of Academic Vocabulary words taught in a state-approved ELA curriculum and compared them to the words used on the California Standards English Language Arts Tests in fourth grade. Data collected from a teacher survey and a student survey were used to evaluate the need for Academic Language and Vocabulary. Finally, the researcher evaluated an independent vocabulary program using pre- and post-assessments to help determine the effectiveness of an independent vocabulary program on a standardized exam. Data show that the deficiency is evident when students and teachers are asked to define Academic Language and Academic Vocabulary and how it is instructed in class. Also, the appearance of Academic Vocabulary on the California Standards Test shows a definitive need to teach Academic Language and Academic Vocabulary. With the research and data to substantiate the need, it is recommended an Academic Language Development program be created and modeled after the English Language Development program.

Book excerpt: The FAIR-FS consists of computer-adaptive reading comprehension and oral language screening tasks that provide measures to track growth over time, as well as a Probability of Literacy Success (PLS) linked to grade-level performance (i.e., the 40th percentile) on the reading comprehension subtest of the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-10) in the 2014-2015 school year and will predict to the Florida Standards Assessment once those data are available. Thus, the FAIR-FS provides universal screening and diagnostic tasks in a precise and efficient computer-adaptive framework with psychometrics and norms derived from large samples of Florida K-12 students representative of Florida demographics. By including Vocabulary Knowledge and Syntax Knowledge Tasks, the FAIR-FS has excellent construct coverage of oral language, which has been shown to account for the vast majority (i.e., 72%-96%, with a median of 87%) of individual differences in reading comprehension in grades 4-10 (Foorman, Koon, Petscher, Mitchell, & Truckenmiller, 2015) and comparable variance to decoding fluency in grades 1-2 (Foorman, Herrera, Petscher, Mitchell, & Truckenmiller, 2015). In grades 3 through 12, the FAIR-FS consists of four computer-adaptive tasks that each provide unique information regarding a student's literacy skills. The FAIR-FS efficiently assesses multiple research-based component skills of reading comprehension to help teachers diagnose skill weaknesses and target instruction. This technical manual provides: (1) An introduction to the alphabetic principle; (2) Comprehending Written Language (better known as Reading Comprehension); (3) Summary of FAIR-FS Constructs and Tasks; and (4) Description of the Tasks in the FAIR-FS. Description of Method, Item Response Theory, Guidelines for Retaining Items, Linking Design and Item Response Analytic Framework, Norming Studies and Score Definitions are also provided. Information on Reliability and Validity is also provided in this manual.
