Self-efficacy has been linked to both sports participation and academic achievement, but no study has examined these three variables together. One hundred eleven students from two schools filled out surveys examining their levels of sports participation, academic and athletic self-efficacy, and demographic information. Participating schools provided student GPA information. Results supported the study's first, second, and third hypotheses. Athletes had higher GPAs and academic self-efficacy scores than non-athletes. Additionally, there was evidence for an indirect effect of sports participation on GPA through the mediating variable of academic self-efficacy. Results did not support the study's fourth hypothesis, as there was no significant relation between academic self-efficacy and athletic self-efficacy among athletes in the present study. Results are discussed in relation to the student population and school environment.

Central to this study was the predictors and outcomes of leadership self-efficacy and leadership goal difficulty. Team experiences, sport ability, and leadership experiences were proposed to be positively associated with leadership self-efficacy and leadership goal difficulty. Leadership self-efficacy and leadership goals were hypothesized to be positively associated with leadership effectiveness and coach's assessments of leadership development. Athletes who participated in this study were 180 student-athletes from six collegiate sport teams at a midwest state university. Of the participants, 110 were men and 70 were women. Participating teams were men's football and soccer and women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and cross-country. The student-athletes completed pre-season questionnaires to report sport self-efficacy, leadership self-efficacy, and leadership goals. During the pre-season, coaches also evaluated player ability. After the season, players nominated peer-athletes who were evaluated as being team leaders, and coaches evaluated the quality of their athletes' leadership during the season. In support of hypotheses, leadership self-efficacy and leadership goal difficulty were positively associated with leadership effectiveness. Sources of leadership self-efficacy and leadership goal difficulty were sport skill level, team tenure, sport self-efficacy and prior leadership experience. These findings suggest the importance of goals and self-confidence for driving the leadership behavior of student athletes in ways that are meaningful to both peers and coaches. As more is known about the specific causes and effects of leadership efficacy and goals on student-athlete behavior, programs might be developed to help coaches implement leadership plans which promote effective team leadership.

Book excerpt: Confidence (i.e., efficacy) plays a pivotal role in sport, whether it is athletes' confidence in themselves, their coaches, or in their collective group. Studies have shown that athletes' self-efficacy, other-efficacy, and collective efficacy beliefs lead to beneficial outcomes, such as enhanced performance, effort, and persistence. While athletes' perceptions of coach behaviors are associated with their efficacy beliefs, no known research has utilized observed coaching behaviors when exploring this relationship. The purpose of this study was to directly observe coaches and examine how their behaviors (i.e., instruction and feedback, positive and negative evaluation, autonomy support, and motivational climate) predict athletes' self-efficacy, other-efficacy, collective efficacy, and relation-inferred self-efficacy (RISE) beliefs. The sample consisted of three coaches, and 64 athletes from NCAA Division I and III sports. Teams included Division I Women's Soccer (n = 19), Division III Men's Lacrosse (n = 35), and Division III Football (n = 10). Coaches were recorded at a single practice, and their behaviors were coded using the Assessment of Coaching Tone observational coding system (Erickson and Cote, 2015). Athletes completed surveys measuring their self-efficacy, other-efficacy, collective efficacy, and RISE. Initial analyses showed that the coaches differed in behavior use. The football coach directed the most behaviors toward individuals, the soccer coach was the most autonomy supportive, and the lacrosse coach was the most mastery oriented. Furthermore, the football team reported higher self-efficacy than the soccer team, and higher collective efficacy than both the soccer and lacrosse teams. Multiple regression analyses revealed that none of the hypothesized coach behaviors were unique predictors of any forms of athlete efficacy beliefs. The findings contribute to existing literature on efficacy sources and provide directions for future research.

This difference has resulted in lower graduation rates overall, and particularly low graduation rates in some universities. Using a framework of social cognitive theory, reciprocal determinism and self-efficacy, this study investigated the academic and athletic self-efficacy of student-athletes in one New Zealand high school. The qualitative case study used data from semi-structured interviews of six students at a secondary, all boys, decile nine, public school. Interview data were analysed through a thematic analysis to establish salient themes that illustrate the experience of those six students at this point in time. Findings suggest that students hold a high value for the input of their teachers and coaches; students recalled differing affective states for classroom and athletic situations; students noted how their individual self-efficacy was different to their group self-efficacy; and that different students allowed different levels of environmental influence on their self-efficacy. The research supports claims that teachers and sport coaches make an important contribution to student-athlete's self-efficacy beliefs. Teachers and coaches promote self-efficacy by creating efficacious classroom and sporting environments that both engage with the affective domain and recognise that individual student-athletes will develop self-efficacy through a range of different sources. In addition, both coaches and teachers would benefit by focussing on how environment, personal factors and behaviour interact to strengthen self-efficacy beliefs.

Many adult learners enroll into the university with numerous sociodemographic characteristics that can hinder their success. Adult students must manage multiple roles and balance their personal, professional and student roles in order to succeed. Twenty-eight percent of first year undergraduate students will not return to college in their second year (American College Testing, 2012). The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between self-efficacy, academic success and persistence for undergraduate students through the lens of Donaldson & Graham's (1999) model of college outcomes for adult learners.The sample for this study represented 310 undergraduate students from two large urban public universities in the United States. This study measured the students' level of self-efficacy and academic persistence in college. The following surveys were employed for this study: the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (Chen, Gully and Eden, 2001) and the Social Integration and Persistence Scale (Pascarella & Terenzini, 1980). Because this survey is nearly 40-years old, the researcher employed an exploratory factor analysis on the data which now suggest that there are six factors that measure academic persistence for adult learners in urban universities. These six factors include: (1) intellectual development, (2) peer group interaction, (3) non-classroom faculty interaction, (4) negative faculty interaction, (5) academic aspirations, and (6) university interconnectedness. This study suggests a significant positive correlation between five of the six factors, with exception to the factor: interconnectedness to the university. The findings suggest that there is a significant correlation between self-efficacy and undergraduate credit hours earned, but no significant correlation between self-efficacy and cumulative grade point average. The findings suggest that there is a positive correlation for student persistence factors: intellectual development and student academic aspirations and between the credit hours earned. There is a significant positive correlation for student persistence factors: intellectual development, student academic aspirations, and university interconnectedness and between the GPA. The findings suggest a negative correlation exists between the students' persistence factor: negative faculty interactions and GPA. This study found a significant influence between numerous student sociodemographic characteristics and factors measuring student persistence.
