Book excerpt: This prelimary investigation examined the impact of teacher mathematics certification on high school special education students' scores on the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) in an urban public school setting. The sample included 76 eleventh grade students classified as special education under IDEA. The student sample represented 70% of males and 30% of females from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds. Five teachers federally classified as highly qualified were included. Out of the teacher sample, four held state certifications in mathematics and one was not certified. Research questions and hypotheses were examined using inferential statistical tests (2-sample t-tests) and effect sizes. Results indicated that special education students who were taught by HQTs certified in mathematics scored significantly better on the Mathematics section of the HSPA than special education students who were taught by HQTs non-certified mathematics teachers. Effect sizes indicated small practical and meaningful differences. Results are outlined and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The third conference on improving mathematics and science assessment brought together more than 550 educators, researchers, and policymakers. Recommendations and information from the conference are incorporated into this report. Conference consensus was that students must recognize that there is more to assessment than grades and scores and begin to see assessment as a crucial and integral part of education. They should assume increasing responsibility for documenting and reflecting on their own progress as they move through school. Parents and the public must hold high expectations for instruction and for student participation. Teachers will hold all students, regardless of their backgrounds, to high standards and will recognize that assessment cannot be separated from learning. Principals and other administrators must oversee the reform of mathematics and science assessment and ensure that the curriculum reflects what we want students to know. An 18-item reading list is attached, and an appendix lists conference participants and sessions. (SLD)

Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, the reformation of mathematics curriculum and instruction has been a topic of debate. The No Child Left Behind Act has created a new level of accountability for school districts to increase the mathematics achievement levels of all students. In order to address the need to increase the mathematics achievement levels, some schools have implemented alternative mathematics programs. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects that one alternative mathematics program had on a group of secondary students. This longitudinal quantitative study examined two graduating classes from one high school located in south central Pennsylvania. One hundred ninety-six students in the class of 2006 participated in a traditional mathematics program and two hundred thirty students in the class of 2007 participated in an alternative mathematics program. Eighth-grade and eleventh-grade Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) data was collected on each of the graduating classes to determine whether the alternative mathematics program had a positive effect on student achievement. High school mathematics course enrollment data was also collected on each of the graduating classes to determine if students in the alternative program complete higher level mathematics courses in comparison to the students participating in the traditional program. Results from the study indicated greater achievement growth in the group of students that participated in the alternative mathematics program. Students participating in the alternative mathematics program showed greater increase in both their scaled scores as well as their PSSA performance levels in comparison to students that participated in the traditional mathematics program. There was not a significant difference in course enrollment between the two groups of students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distance education, combining the use of correspondence texts, broadcasting and limited opportunities for face-to-face study, has been used in at least a hundred teacher training programmes over the last 25 years. Distance Education for Teacher Training is the first comparative review of the use of distance education and open learning for the training and upgrading of teachers. The book contains case studies using a broadly common format both to describe and analyse distance teacher training programmes in eleven countries across five continents. The case studies describe the methods used to examine how far the craft of teaching can be studied at a distance. Using a standardised microeconomic framework, they provide unique data on the comparative costs of training teachers by distance and conventional methods. The authors then draw general conclusions about the advantages and drawbacks of using distance education or open learning, about the conditions for success, and about comparative effects and costs. Distance Education for Teacher Training will be of value to all concerned with teacher education, whether in developing or industrialised countries, and to those working in and planning for distance education and open learning.
