Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research project report was to increase the homework completion rate of middle school students through the use of interventions. The participants in this study came from one public middle school. The participants were thirty-four 6th grade students in language arts, respectively. The intervention took place from September 10, 2007 through November 20, 2007. The targeted students at one public middle school in northwestern Illinois exhibited low levels of homework completion. The teacher researchers surveyed teachers, parents, and students, in addition to completing teacher observation checklists for each of the targeted students. The teacher survey asked questions pertaining to students turning in homework, and receiving consequences for not doing so. The parent survey revealed that students do not bring homework assignments home but do ask for assistance when needed. The student survey indicated that parents helped their child with their homework assignments less than half the time (zero to three days a week). Also, students indicated that they fill out their planners most of the time (four to five days a week). The teacher observation checklists showed that incomplete homework assignments were a significant problem for the targeted students. One of the interventions that was chosen to implement was positive reinforcement through the Gotcha system. This intervention has been referred to as a way for students to receive positive feedback, as well as a way to motivate students to increase their rate of homework completion. Another intervention chosen to use included increasing parental involvement in the completion of student homework through the use of daily homework planners. This intervention has been used as a strategy that has led to increased parental involvement, and an increase in the homework completion rate (Bryan & Burstein, 2004, Teacher). This intervention involved students writing assignments in their homework planners daily and taking the planners home to have them signed by their parents. By doing this students and parents were establishing a homework completion routine. The teacher researchers found that the use of Gotcha's and student planners seemed to positively effect the parent involvement rate. However, the percentage of incomplete assignments increased by seven percent. The teacher researchers also found that fewer students asked their parents for help with their homework. The teacher researchers believe that the use of planners helped students to organize their homework, and made parents more aware of homework assignments. This will require studying the role played by teachers, students, and families in order to ensure that schoolwork is a useful learning tool. Although the role of the student is, obviously, crucial in homework, research has focused on the cumulative time spent by the student carrying out homework. However, the time spent on homework is not in itself evidence of the student’s involvement nor is time spent indicative of quality time. Indeed, an excess of time can sometimes denote low competence in a field of knowledge, while spending less time on homework could be indicative of high competence. It is more likely that a high dedication of time spent on homework reflects high motivation, or comprehension deficits, rather than commitment to learning or academic motivation. In tandem with the role of the student, teachers, as responsible for prescribing homework assignments for students, also become central players in the process of completing homework assignments. The decisions that teachers make about homework prescriptions, and the amount and type of tasks they set, will determine, to a large extent, the quality of the homework process including the student’s motivation and the student’s level of engagement with homework. Furthermore, the fact that homework is useful, interesting and motivating for students, will depend on how the teacher prescribes those tasks and the connection established with classroom learning. Teacher feedback also acquires particular relevance for this point by helping the students to accurately estimate the quality of their progress and overcome the difficulties they may have encountered in carrying out their homework. Lastly, the effectiveness of teacher feedback depends on its contribution to the student’s educational progress and how that student will perform in the future. In addition to the student who performs the task and the teacher who prescribes and corrects it, we must not lose sight of parents’ role. Although there are discrepancies regarding the role that parents play in relation to homework, it is evident that their implication has important consequences not only on the final result of those tasks but also on the very process of carrying them out. Everything seems to indicate that the family environment and, more specifically, the support and feedback provided by parents is a factor that can determine the involvement of students in school duties. In this way, providing emotional support encouraging children to get involved can contribute positively to improving their motivation and interest in the performance of homework. The objective of this Research Topic is to provide researchers and professionals in psychology and education settings with some of the most recent empirical evidence regarding the homework process, its prescription and correction. Overall, we aim to cease making homework a source of conflict and controversy at the socio-educational level in order to provide useful instruments for improving the quality of student learning. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the student outcomes of the Homework, Organization and Planning Skills (HOPS) program (Langberg, 2011), a 16-sessions intervention designed to improve these skills in middle-school students with ADHD, and identify the different elements that may impact the degree of success, feasibility and dissemination of the program as perceived by three middle-school students, their parents and one of their teachers. In addition, the replacement of the HOPS paper calendar by a digital equivalent for tablets was also explored. Both qualitative (interviews) and quantitative (behaviour rating scales) data were collected from each of the three participants, their parents and one teacher prior to and following the completion of the HOPS intervention. Findings suggest that the HOPS program yielded progress in the area of homework completion and planning of academic schoolwork and organization of material. Also, although both parents and teachers noted academic improvements, teachers observed more moderate progress. In addition, the length and timing of the sessions were perceived as the program's strengths, whereas the level of parent involvement and the student's level of independence at the end of the intervention were deemed a difficulty.

Empirical studies show that when school counselors are involved in academic interventions then student academic performance improves. This study explores middle school counselors' use of academic interventions to enhance student academic performance. Specifically, this study examines middle school counselors' experiences (use, extent of use, frequency of use) with academic interventions and how particular school counselor (years of experience, caseload) and school variables (size, type, setting, number of students receiving free/reduced lunch) are related to the use of academic interventions. This study examined three critical questions and tested six hypotheses using a quantitative research design. A series of descriptive statistics and one way ANOVAs were used to answer the study's three research questions. Two hundred fifty-nine middle school counselors from around the United States participated in the School Counselor Use of Academic Intervention Survey. This online survey consisted of counseling and school demographic information, intervention use, extent and frequency of intervention use and what time of day interventions took place. The study found that middle school counselors reported actively using evidence-based academic interventions to enhance student success. As the school counselor's caseload increases, the use of academic interventions decreases. Similarly, as the student population increases, the school counselor's use of academic interventions decreases. The impact of years of experience was inconsistent, with increased and decreased use of academic interventions in a non-linear pattern. The school counselor's role in improving student academic success is a focus in current school counseling literature; but little research has examined the use of interventions, especially at the middle school level. The findings from this study demonstrate the important role middle school counselors have in using academic interventions. Limitations, implications, and suggestions for further research are provided.
