Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between taking a student success course and the educational outcomes of persistence, credential attainment, and academic self-efficacy at one particular community college in North Carolina. Although previous studies have examined student success courses in relation to persistence and credential attainment, few have included a self-efficacy component. This study filled an additional gap in prior studies by seeking student perceptions about their experience in a student success course. Several major findings emerged from the study. Chi-square results revealed significant relationships between enrollment in the student success course and the outcomes of persistence and credential attainment. In addition, logistic regression results indicated that being younger, enrolling in a developmental education course, attending part-time, persisting, and completing a college credential predicted the likelihood of enrolling in the student success course. ANOVA results also revealed a significant relationship on the Understanding Subscale of the Academic Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for student success course participants as compared to a control group. Student perceptions obtained from a focus group provided further support that taking the student success course positively influenced academic self-efficacy and academic success. Findings from the current student contribute to the growing body of literature that student success courses provide students with certain skillsets and greater confidence to succeed in college. -- From the Abstract, leaves iv-v.

Book excerpt: Little is known about student success in online learning environments, especially how the predisposing characteristics that the learner brings to the learning environment may differentially affect student outcomes. This study explored the question of whether a student's "readiness" to be a self-directed learner is a predictor of student success in an online community college curriculum. The specific goal of this investigation was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness-as measured by Guglielmino's (1977) Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS)- and student success-as measured by course completion, grade point average (GPA) and student satisfaction, the latter assessed by student responses to an opinion poll. The subjects of this study were community college students in the state of Washington, enrolled in one or more transfer-level online courses delivered via WashingtonONLINE (WAOL) during fall quarter 1999. Students who voluntarily chose to respond to two elective surveys comprised the study sample. A correlational research design was used to test the explanatory power of self-directed learning readiness and to describe the relationships between variables. Since this study was designed to test hypothesized relationships, the resulting correlation coefficients were interpreted in terms of their statistical significance. The expected outcome of this study was to confirm or disconfirm a statistically significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness and student success in an online community college curriculum. The findings of this study failed to achieve this outcome due to (1) the lack of statistical reliability of the SDLRS among the subject population; (2) the resulting lack of validity of the SDLRS among the study sample; (3) a nonresponse effect; and (4) a self-selection effect. The unanticipated outcome of this study was evidence that student perception of student/instructor interactions is a single variable predictor of student success among community college students in an online learning environment. Recommendations for further study include Web-specific research methodologies that address the potentially deleterious effects of nonresponse and self-selection in cyber-research environments and continued exploration of the multiple facets of student success in asynchronous learning domains.

Book excerpt: A nonexperimental, causal-comparative (ex post facto) research design was used in this study to examine the effectiveness and value of a College Success Skills course for students who tested into three developmental courses at the community college. The discussion and debate as to the efficacy of developmental education at community colleges has been continuing for decades. In many states, legislators seem to be prioritizing the issue of developmental education and the cost involved, both in time and money to students and taxpayers. The issue is complex as students arrive at community colleges with a wide variance in basic academic skills as most community colleges have open enrollment policies that permit all students to enroll in classes regardless of high school grade point averages or test scores. Although most students in community colleges graduated from high school, many also either earned a General Equivalency Degree (GED) or dropped out of high school. Adding to the challenges for these students is the fact that many students at community colleges receive full Pell Grant financial aid, which is approved only if income is at or near the poverty level. Many students have limited financial resources and struggle in the areas of suitable transportation, childcare, and daily living expenses. In addition to focused effort needed to overcome academic deficiencies in basic skills, many students have other distractions that usurp their time and energy. With this in mind, it is important that community colleges work with legislators to identify the strategies and policies needed to improve the outcomes for all students testing into developmental courses.

Book excerpt: Many first-year seminar courses focus on helping students adjust academically and socially to college life with the intent of increasing persistence and ultimately degree completion. While there is evidence in the literature that these courses positively affect persistence and academic success at universities, research is limited in documenting the effectiveness of these courses at community colleges. This research addressed the deficiency in the literature by examining the effects of a first-year seminar or course at one urban community college. Students who were in college for the first time and took an FY course at Midwest Community College between fall 2006 and spring 2008 were randomly selected for this study. These students were matched to first-time students who did not take the course on variables known to impact persistence and academic success and included age, gender, ethnicity, enrollment status, federal aid eligibility, and pre-enrollment academic ability. Chi square analyses revealed no differences in persistence to the next academic term, however there was a statistically significant difference in yearly persistence for all students, especially part-time and underprepared students. Independent samples t tests showed that although mean cumulative GPA's were higher for students who took the FY course, the differences were not statistically significant. Partial correlation holding academic preparedness and enrollment status constant also revealed no statistically significant differences in final grades in specific gatekeeper courses, English Composition and elementary mathematics.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research study was to determine the effectiveness of two online college success courses: CPD 150 (College Success, 3 credits) and CPD 115 (Success Strategies, 1 credit), at Rio Salado College, a Maricopa Community College in Arizona. The goal of these courses is to prepare students to be college-ready by examining college readiness and learning skills. The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire measured students' perceptions of their own college readiness in a pre-test/post-test format. Understanding students' perceptions of their own college readiness is the college's first step in understanding the effectiveness of these courses. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to compare the pre- and post-tests to determine whether the average student scores changed after completion of the college success course. Paired samples t-tests (or repeated-measures test) were conducted on 2 scales consisting of 13 subscales of the MSLQ of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. Data analysis revealed that students reported that they had better study skills after the course than before completing the course. Particularly, learning strategies, test anxiety, self-efficacy, effort regulation (self-management), control of learning beliefs, study skills, and time and study environment stand out as showing substantial improvement for the students.
