Organized information flow became the mainstay of industrial companies. New tools and information technology systems emerged and evolved to enable companies to integrate the various departments (Design, Procurement, Manufacturing, Sales and Finance) within companies, particularly the lager ones, including international corporations. This was to give them a chance to meet new demands for product time to market, just in time supply of orders, and customer support. To the smaller company these changes were not so apparent. Neither the tools nor systems nor indeed their economic value seemed appropriate to them except for special cases. While all this was happening the structure of the larger companies began to disintegrate. Strong competitive pressures and globalization of the market place brought this about. Shedding unwanted competence and subcontracting it to others became common practice. Regional market pressures triggered companies to reorganize to create, produce, and distribute goods and services. Greater dependency on chains of supply from external companies became the norm. Medium and smaller sized companies began to gain some advantage and at the same time some were sucked into management and control systems governed by the larger companies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Supply Chain Information Technology (SCIT) is a key enabler of effective supply chain management (SCM) activities. In 2013, $300 billion was spent on SCIT by firms globally, an increase by 1.8% and 3.8% compared to 2012 and 2011, respectively. With such significant investments, firms face risks of eroded financial performance if SCIT does not perform as expected. In fact, there is a mix of evidence with some firms benefiting from SCIT while others failing to benefit from investing in SCIT. Despite substantial research relating to utilizing information technology in a SCM context, the impact of SCIT on firm performance remains unclear. In particular, the extant literature has reported contradictive results regarding relationships between SCIT and firm performance. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to conduct a systematic investigation of roles of information technology in SCM and shed light on this extremely important research area. In chapter 2, we investigate the direct impact of SCIT on firm performance by conducting a meta-analysis study. Specifically, we look at four types of SCIT characteristics (e.g. application integration, data compatibility, analytic ability, and evaluation and alertness ability) within three loci of utilization: upstream, downstream, and both upstream-downstream. We find +that SCIT is not universally associated with improved firm performance. In particular, SCIT has multiple characteristics, and each characteristic is linked to different performance indicators. In chapter 3, we investigate how SCIT can conditionally change the relationship between supply base complexity (SBC) or customer base complexity (CBC) and performance. Extant literature suggests that a complex supply or customer base can lead to suboptimal organizational performance. Using secondary data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Annual Survey of Manufacturers, we are able to examine the impact of SBC and CBC on performance at the industry level of analysis. Further, we find that SCIT helps eliminate the negative impact of SBC and CBC on performance. By systematically investigating the direct and indirect impacts of SCIT on performance, this dissertation contributes to the understanding of the roles of information technology in supply chain management.

Book excerpt: This research is conducted within the broad theme of how interorganizational information systems may help firms to make better decisions and how these improved decisions may lead to improved firm performance. The theoretical model developed in this research reflects the notion that when higher quality information is exchanged between supply chain partners, outcomes of joint planning and decision-making processes will be improved, which will lead to improved firm performance. Within this framework, one of the fundamental propositions is that an effective interorganizational information system will increase the quality of the information exchanged between supply chain partners. The increased quality of information associated with interorganizational information systems is expected to be associated with better outcomes from joint planning and decision making processes, which are in turn expected to be associated with greater levels of performance. The theoretical model was tested using a sample of 169 purchasing and supply chain managers and executives primarily located in the United States. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed in this research to estimate the parameters associated with the relationships of interest. Key results from this research include the finding that information quality has a significant impact on the outcomes of eight different joint planning and decision making processes and that these processes are associated with certain firm-level performance outcomes. Further, within several of these processes, the effect of information quality on joint planning and decision making outcomes is significantly larger for interorganizational information system enabled information quality than for non-interorganizational information system enabled information quality. Theoretical and practical insight is developed within each of the eight joint planning and decision making contexts.

Book excerpt: Marketing and MIS literature have examined the relationship between technology adoption in firms and resulting firm performance with mixed results. Many examinations have been in intra-organizational contexts, but as inter-organizational interactions such as the supply chain play an increasingly important role in competitive advantage development and in firm performance, more work is needed to better understand the relationships between firm strategy, firm capabilities, and technology performance within a supply-chain context. This research seeks to provide additional understanding by investigating the antecedents and outcomes of firm technology response capability within the context of supply chain technology adoption decisions. This capability, which is a firm's willingness and ability to respond to new technologies, is an important factor in firm behavior with respect to innovation adoption. In the present study, a multi-dimensional, behavioral operationalization of technology response capability is offered, along with a conceptual model of the relationships between strategic orientation, antecedents of technology response capability, and performance outcomes. Both quantitative and qualitative data were used in this study. A quantitative test of the hypothesized relationships was conducted using survey methodology, and qualitative interviews were used to explore the concept of technology response capability and provide support for the conceptual model relationships. This research will add to marketing strategy knowledge by providing insight on factors that influence technology response capability development and by providing insight on how the capability impacts performance of the firm.
