Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: A glucose biosensor is develop by using covalent immobilization of glucose oxidase enzyme onto a carbon paste electrode which is made by Dropsense is used in this project . There are three electrodes which are counter electrode (CE) made by carbon paste, reference electrode (RE) made by silver paste and the third one is working electrode (WE) made by carbon paste. The sol gel is prepared and is dropped onto the center of the electrode where the working electrode is placed. The sol gel is used as membrane for glucose oxidase enzyme to immobilize. The best method is choosed as sandwich type of immobilization. The sandwich type of immobilization has three layer which is layer one sol gel with ferrocene, layer two is glucose oxidase and the third layer is sol gel without ferrocene. The method is benefit to produce the better and safe place for enzyme to immobilize and safe from denature, leaching or wash out. The dropview software is used for measurement which is provided by DropSens Instrument.

Book excerpt: ROLE OF MICROBES IN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES The book covers recent breakthroughs and highlights the major role microbes play in industrial products and processes. With the advent of industrial biotechnology, microbes became popular as cell factories, and with the recent advancements in recombinant DNA technology, the application of microorganisms in various sectors has increased enormously for the development of various processes and products. Role of Microbes in Industrial Products and Processes covers recent breakthroughs and highlights the major role microbes play in industrial products and processes. It mainly focuses on the bio-refinery concept where bio-energy production and wastewater treatment are done simultaneously using micro-algae. Additionally, this book describes the role of microbes involved in the production of various enzymes, organic acids, and bio-polymers. It also provides detailed insight on modeling and simulation of bioprocess for the production of sugar alcohol; recovery of value-added products from organic waste using microbes is also reported. Detailed insights into the treatment of wastewater released from various industries, especially pharmaceutical wastewater, are given. Audience The book is intended for researchers, scientists, and postgraduates in chemical/biochemical engineering and bioprocess engineering, and others working in the domain of food microbiology, bioenergy/refinery, waste valorization to value-added products, and microbial production of bioplastics, sugar alcohols, enzymes, and organic acids.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glucose oxidase (ß-D-glucose: oxygen 1-oxidoreductase) catalyzes the oxidation of D-glucose to gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Glucose oxidase is inactivated by the substrate oxygen and by hydrogen peroxide produced during glucose oxidation. The soluble enzyme has been shown to inactivate quickly under turnover conditions, with half-lives of 21 and 14 h at oxygen partial pressures of 21 and 101 kPa, respectively. The overall objective of the current work was to improve the stability of glucose oxidase through immobilization. A technique for covalent immobilization of glucose oxidase (GO) and catalase (CAT) on membranes of nylon 66 was developed. The immobilization technique established in this work yielded a desirable uptake of glucose oxidase and ensured an excess of catalase activity (CAT:GO activity ratio of 17:1), required to minimize peroxide inactivation. Immobilization on nylon proved to enhance substantially the operational stability of glucose oxidase. The enzyme stability was measured by using the immobilized-enzyme membranes for the conversion of glucose in a repeated-fed batch process. Peroxide inactivation of glucose oxidase was effectively prevented by supplying readily available catalase in the reaction medium. Unlike soluble glucose oxidase, the immobilized enzyme did not undergo significant O 2-mediated inactivation. The immobilized glucose oxidase was essentially stable over an eight-day period at an oxygen partial pressure of 21 kPa. Under 100% oxygen, the immobilized enzyme had an estimated half-life of 150 h. Peroxide-mediated inactivation was observed when the immobilized catalase activity was insufficient, and consequently, the half-life of glucose oxidase decreased to 35 h.
