Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Immanence of God Thus religious thought is progressing; and the result to which all lines of reflec tion are fast converging is the ancient word of inspiration, that in God we live and move and have our being. This is at once the clear indication of thought and the assured conviction of faith. In this conclusion, moreover, both religion and philosophy find their only sure foundation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Theology: Thoughts on the Universality and Continuity of the Doctrine of the Immanence of God In Him we live and move and have our being, he was not, as the Athenians said, the setter forth of strange gods, or the author of a New Theology, but the exponent of a truth as old as the world. This was clearly in the mind of Augustine when he wrote Opera, vol. I., p. 12) The thing itself which is now called the Christian religion was really known to the ancients, nor was wanting at any time from the beginning of the human race until the time that Christ came in the flesh, from whence the true religion, which had previously existed, began to be called Christian; and this. The proposition is the old doctrine of the omnipresence of God. It is also the new doctrine of the immanence of God. It is the scientific doctrine that all we know of the world is that it is force, combined with the philosophical doctrine that this force is personal. It is the song of the poet as well as the teaching of the philosopher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature of God: A Series of Lectures The following lectures were delivered before the students of Wittenberg Theological Seminary dur ing the winter of 1908 and 1909. They are an attempt to present the Christian idea of God as opposed to that of philosophy. Between the two conceptions there is a fundamental difference. Philosophy conceives of God either from the stand point of absolute transcendence or that of helpless immanence; as utterly removed from the world, or as lost in it. To the hunger of the soul for a God with whom it may hold fellowship, and from whom it may derive help, philosophy offers a stone in stead of bread. Man needs a God who in every sense of the term is near; a Being capable of being touched with a feeling of our infirmities for the reason that He has Himself felt them. 'it is for a quasi-human God that the soul hungers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Immanence of God: In Rabbinical Literature The following pages treat of an aspect of ancient Jewish theology which has, as yet, received an all too scant attention. Indeed, the number of modern books dealing with Jewish theology, whether as a whole or under any of its many constituent aspects, is absurdly small. A few distinguished names leap to the mind at once. But admirable and thorough as is the work of these scholars, the output is by no means commensurate with the scope, importance, and complexity of the subject. As a result of this barrenness of production, the theology of Rabbinic Judaism - and hence Judaism itself - has never yet had the good fortune to be weighed in the scales of absolute fairness. The average Jew, unable to read the originals for himself, is, through a shortage of text-books, quite incompetent to pronounce an opinion of any worth upon the religion which has meant so much for his fathers and for the world. The average Christian does pronounce opinions, but as these opinions are drawn, neither from the originals nor from the few Jewish scholars who have written on these topics, they are invariably one-sided and incomplete. I believe that the silence of Jews about their own theology has been construed by many non-Jews into a proof that they really have no theology worth writing about. The writer will be thankful for any friendly criticisms. He can hardly expect to avoid all mistakes, and his work will, no doubt, have many imperfections. It is his desire to conform, in all respects, to the Catholic Faith - that Faith which was once for all delivered to the saints, and which is taught in the Holy Scriptures, summed up in the Creeds, and affirmed by the undisputed General Councils By that standard he.would have his statements criticised and, when necessary, corrected. Theology must not, however, be supposed to be a dry and tedious subject. Though the word is Greek, it sim ply means our thought about God. There is nothing more interesting than this. There is nothing that an intelligent child might like better to know than what God is and what God does, and especially, if one can learn to see God. Some think that they are conscious of God now. They are as sure of the presence of God watching over them when they wake in the morning, or when they lie down to sleep, as little children are conscious of their mothers' presence. They are as conscious of the presence of God here ih-this church as we are all conscious of each other. We want to help show that these persons are right, and say what is true about God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Cross Atonement in the scheme of Christian theology. I have tried in these lectures to indicate the form which I think our interpretation of the Cross will take. We shall make central the thought that God suffers with His universe. One of the most urgent needs for theology at this moment is to think out the relation between the twin concep tions of Transcendence and Immanence. The Cross of Christ. Certainly Wins a new significance when set against the background of the divine immanence. But the Cross was no defeat, but a triumph. That is the cardinal message of Christianity. Hence the conception of a God who suffers with His world must be shown to be compatible with the conception of a God who in suffering is transcendently Victorious other wise the Cross spells weakness instead of power.
