Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Buddha I have done my best to expose both the theoretical and practical doctrines of Buddha, all in all according to the authorized Chinese Text. I should have published the classification of Buddha's Personality, ' had it not been too voluminous and so complicated for this small book. It may not be altogether useless for those readers who can read the Japanese original as well as the English translation to state here that the translators have given a few small turns and contractions to my original, with out missing the spirit of the original. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed of Buddha That the problem has not yet been even ap proximately solved is my sincere conviction. I have read many treatises on Buddhism; but I have yet to find the writer who, when expounding the philosophy (as distinguished from the ethical system) of Buddha, teaches as one having au thority and not as the Scribes. The indisputable fact that Buddha himself kept silence with regard to the ultimate realities and ultimate issues of life, shows that the task of interpreting his creed is one for criticism (in the widest and deepest sense of the word) rather than for scholarship. Book Synopsis The Way of the Buddha (Classic Reprint) by : Herbert Baynes
Download or read book The Way of the Buddha (Classic Reprint) written by Herbert Baynes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of the Buddha The object of this little book is to give the reader a succinct account of an Eastern sage whose doctrine of the Path has been accepted by millions of the human race, and whose influ ence is still felt at the ends of the earth. What is generally understood by Buddhism will be found to differ greatly from the way of emancipation here set forth. And for this reason Unlike all other religions, Buddhism began with out God and without prayer, and ended in be coming a most elaborate system of polytheism with a superstitious multiplication of collects. Up to the time of Asoka, about 250 b.o., it seems to have remained comparatively pure; but by the thirteenth century a.d., when the revival of Brahmanism drove it from India, it had assumed in other countries so many new features as to be hardly recognisable. Nor should this be a matter for great surprise. When an essentially Aryan religion or system of philosophy is transplanted to Turanian lands it is not to be expected that it will remain unchanged. The contrast between the teaching of the Christ and of His apostles, and the Christianity of Rome in the Middle Ages is indeed great, but the difference between the Buddhism of Tibet and the Dharma of Sakya Muni 1s greater still. The history of the faith In all the lands m which it has taken root is far too vast a subject for our present purpose, but a general outline of its rise and fall in Aryavarta. Book Synopsis The Bronze Buddha by : Cora Linn Daniels
Download or read book The Bronze Buddha written by Cora Linn Daniels and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bronze Buddha: A Mystery A palm of enormous height stands in a maze of pampas grass. A great vulture hovers half way down the trunk. At its base a tiger lolls lazily beside his dead prey, - a negro mutilated and bleeding sprawled in the tiger's paws. The hot sand reflects a brassy yellow light. The atmosphere seems choking with intense heat. Such was the wonderful picture of the great Russian painter before which I stood silent and motionless. It thrilled and fascinated me. I had come upon it suddenly as I turned a corner, and its tropic splendor, its human tragedy, its animal triumph and prophecy, touched me to the quick. As I still stood there absorbed in deep thought, a most peculiar voice, - a voice so distinct yet so low, that it would remind you of an echo in a whispering gallery, said gently in my very ear, - "If this pleases you, what do you think of the bronze god who presides over such scenes?" I turned with a start and saw a man whose face I hope you will never forget. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imitation of Sankara: Being a Collection of Several Texts Bearing on the Advaita It has been the ambition of my heart, from the first hand experience have had of the truth of these re marks, to present the main Idea of this sublime universal Philosolihy of the Absolute in as simple and popular a form as the nature of the subject would permit. The deservedly popular book of thomas-a-kempis, The Imitation of Christ} fascinated my attention. And Bowdon's Imitation of Buddha' suggested the plan of this work. There was the same mighty spirit breathing in the child of Galilee, the prince of Kapilavastu, and this Bmi/mmna of Southern India. He has as much right to an 'imitation' as the other scers of antiquity; the need for an 'imitation of S'ankara is perhaps greatest in the present day. Download or read book The Story of Buddhism (Classic Reprint) written by K. J. Saunders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Buddhism Buddhism is being eagerly studied in the West, and there is no dearth of books upon it. Yet a brief history of its amazing developments may prove useful in helping those who are not experts to a sane view Of it, and to a knowledge alike of its strength and of its weakness. It is for such readers that this little book has been written it avoids technicalities as far as possible, and ignores many great problems, seeking to give a Simple yet accurate and sympathetic account of the religion Of Gautama Buddha and its developments. Six years spent in close contact with the peoples of Burma and Ceylon have convinced me that what ever it may have done in its Golden Age, and strong as its hold still is, the Buddhism of today in all its many forms is almost powerless to effect either individual or social regeneration. I believe that a sympathetic and open-minded study of it and its history will convince the student that this is so, and will send the Christian back to the study of his own religion with a new understanding of it and a new appreciation of its wonderful power to meet human needs and to satisfy human aspirations.
