Book excerpt: How do national stereotypes emerge? To which extent are they determined by historical or ideological circumstances, or else by cultural, literary or discursive conventions? This first inclusive critical compendium on national characterizations and national (cultural or ethnic) stereotypes contains 120 articles by 73 contributors. Its three parts offer [1] a number of in-depth survey articles on ethnic and national images in European literatures and cultures over many centuries; [2] an encyclopedic survey of the stereotypes and characterizations traditionally ascribed to various ethnicities and nationalities; and [3] a conspectus of relevant concepts in various cultural fields and scholarly disciplines. The volume as a whole, as well as each of the articles, has extensive bibliographies for further critical reading. Imagologyis intended both for students and for senior scholars, facilitating not only a first acquaintance with the historical development, typology and poetics of national stereotypes, but also a deepening of our understanding and analytical perspective by interdisciplinary and comparative contextualization and extensive cross-referencing.

Book Synopsis Imagining ‘the Turk’ by : Božidar Jezernik
Download or read book Imagining ‘the Turk’ written by Božidar Jezernik and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A human being is a symbolic creature and, to the same extent, an active inventor of otherness. Europe and Turkey, The West and the Balkans, are infinitely exploitable symbols. Any symbol, inherently polysemic and socially construed, is continuously contested and negotiated. The image of ‘the Turk’ as a ruthless plunderer is still vivid in European collective memory. Although it occasionally still verges on ethnic mythology, it clearly belongs to a past where, along with the plague and famine, this name used to be mentioned in prayers more frequently than that of God itself. In the past, the name ‘Turk’ implied the negative of the European self-image. ‘The Turk,’ assuming the role of the ‘defining other,’ was considered as everything a European was not (primitive, barbarian, savage vs. civilised). As such, this concept was one of the constitutive elements of European (Western) cultural identity. The aim of this book is nothing less than a better understanding of the European past related to the Ottomans. An intellectual traveller who takes his Orient Express at Victoria, however, will have to get off somewhere half-way and spend some time in the part of Europe set between the Alps and the Adriatic before ending his journey in Istanbul.

Download or read book Europe in Motion written by Maurizio Bach and published by edition sigma. This book was released on 2006 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Enemy at the Gate by : Andrew Wheatcroft
Download or read book The Enemy at the Gate written by Andrew Wheatcroft and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1683, an Ottoman army that stretched from horizon to horizon set out to seize the "Golden Apple," as Turks referred to Vienna. The ensuing siege pitted battle-hardened Janissaries wielding seventeenth-century grenades against Habsburg armies, widely feared for their savagery. The walls of Vienna bristled with guns as the besieging Ottoman host launched bombs, fired cannons, and showered the populace with arrows during the battle for Christianity's bulwark. Each side was sustained by the hatred of its age-old enemy, certain that victory would be won by the grace of God. The Great Siege of Vienna is the centerpiece for historian Andrew Wheatcroft's richly drawn portrait of the centuries-long rivalry between the Ottoman and Habsburg empires for control of the European continent. A gripping work by a master historian, The Enemy at the Gate offers a timely examination of an epic clash of civilizations.
Book Synopsis Religion, Nationalism and Foreign Policy by : Filiz Coban Oran
Download or read book Religion, Nationalism and Foreign Policy written by Filiz Coban Oran and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical discussion on how different discourses of nationalism in the Turkish media construct contested concepts of New Turkey's identity, which has great importance for mapping modern Turkey's place in the world of nations. Drawing on a Discourse-Historical Approach, the author analyses different discourses on Turkish national identity and foreign policy in Turkish media in the second term of the AKP government from 2007 to 2011, which was the period of consolidation of Muslim conservative nationalism in both internal and external relations. By using three case studies, including the Presidential elections in 2007, the launch of Kurdish Initiative in 2009, and the debate of axis shift in Western orientation of Turkish Foreign Policy in 2010, the book argues that not only has AKP's Muslim nationalism reconstructed new Turkish foreign policy, but also new Turkish foreign policy discourse has reconstructed Turkish nation's Muslim identity and reinforced Muslim nationalism.
Book Synopsis Broken Masculinities by : Cimen Gunay-Erkol
Download or read book Broken Masculinities written by Cimen Gunay-Erkol and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Masculinities portrays the post-dictatorial novel of the 1970s in all its complexity, and introduces the reader to a 1968-era Turkey, a period which challenges Turkey?s now reinforced Islamic image by portraying the quest for sexual liberation and critical student uprisings. G?nay-Erkol argues that the literature written after the 1970 coup in Turkey constitutes a coherent sub-genre and needs to be considered together. These novels share a common ground which is rich in images of men and women craving for power: general isolation, sexual-emotional frustration, and a traumatic sense of solitude and alienation. This book is an original and significant contribution to two major fields of study: (1) gender and sexuality with respect to formation of subjectivity through literature, and (2) modern literature and history through the study of Turkish literature. The chief concern in this book is not only literature?s response to a particular period in Turkey, but also the role of literature in bearing witness to trauma and drastic political acts of violence?and coming to terms with them. ÿ
