Book Synopsis The Devil in History by : Vladimir Tismaneanu
Download or read book The Devil in History written by Vladimir Tismaneanu and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Devil in History is a provocative analysis of the relationship between communism and fascism. Reflecting the author’s personal experiences within communist totalitarianism, this is a book about political passions, radicalism, utopian ideals, and their catastrophic consequences in the twentieth century’s experiments in social engineering. Vladimir Tismaneanu brilliantly compares communism and fascism as competing, sometimes overlapping, and occasionally strikingly similar systems of political totalitarianism. He examines the inherent ideological appeal of these radical, revolutionary political movements, the visions of salvation and revolution they pursued, the value and types of charisma of leaders within these political movements, the place of violence within these systems, and their legacies in contemporary politics. The author discusses thinkers who have shaped contemporary understanding of totalitarian movements—people such as Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin, Albert Camus, François Furet, Tony Judt, Ian Kershaw, Leszek Kolakowski, Richard Pipes, and Robert C. Tucker. As much a theoretical analysis of the practical philosophies of Marxism-Leninism and Fascism as it is a political biography of particular figures, this book deals with the incarnation of diabolically nihilistic principles of human subjugation and conditioning in the name of presumably pure and purifying goals. Ultimately, the author claims that no ideological commitment, no matter how absorbing, should ever prevail over the sanctity of human life. He comes to the conclusion that no party, movement, or leader holds the right to dictate to the followers to renounce their critical faculties and to embrace a pseudo-miraculous, a mystically self-centered, delusional vision of mandatory happiness.

Book Synopsis Communism and the Conscience of the West by : Fulton J. Sheen
Download or read book Communism and the Conscience of the West written by Fulton J. Sheen and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communism and the Conscience of the West revolves around the single, disconcerting idea that Communism, in both its ideological and practical forms, is on the conscience of the Western world. Because the West has broadly lost that spiritual sensibility which made it great, thus reducing both man and cosmos to wholly material and base realities, Fulton J. Sheen argues, there is nothing to prevent the dissolution of the old order into a new and terrifying totality. And thus appears Communism: the recalcitrant, neurotic child of a permissive, neglectful parent. Since it first appeared in 1948, during the initial frigid days of the Cold War, Communism and the Conscience of the West has proven to be a prophetic witness to the grave dangers of decadent, individualistic liberalism and atheistic, collectivist totalitarianism alike. While the Cold War has ended and Soviet Union passed away, these dangers have endured and even metastasized. For the basic struggle remains: the moral and spiritual struggle for the very soul of mankind.

Book Synopsis Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the Contemporary Humanist by : Emmanuel K. Ngwainmbi
Download or read book Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the Contemporary Humanist written by Emmanuel K. Ngwainmbi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a theological reflection of Sheen’s contribution to humanity and society. It analyzes the modern person from the Catholic doctrinal perspective, explores Fulton Sheen’s perception of the contemporary individual, and demonstrates that global economic, religious, and political crises cannot be resolved by focusing only on the mundane. It further underscores some contemporary anthropological challenges and proposes a philosophy and theology of life that can enable contemporary humans to know themselves better and make life worth living. The authors argue that advancements in science and technology have failed to prolong happiness; people are still frustrated, disillusioned, cynical, bored, and suicidal. This book enters the landscape of Sheen’s controversial pause before he was sanctified and provides a lengthy, liturgical extrapolation of Sheen’s Christian anthropology, wrestling with other thinkers and general concerns surrounding human angst in modern society.
Book Synopsis Anti-Communism in Twentieth-Century America by : Larry Ceplair
Download or read book Anti-Communism in Twentieth-Century America written by Larry Ceplair and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling, critical analysis of anti-communism illustrates the variety of anti-Communist styles and agendas, thereby making a persuasive case that the "threat" of domestic communism in Cold War America was vastly overblown. In the United States today, communism is an ideology or political movement that barely registers in the consciousness of our nation. Yet merely half a century ago, "communist" was a buzzword that every citizen in our nation was aware of—a term that connoted "traitor" and almost certainly a characterization that most Americans were afraid of. Anti-Communism in Twentieth-Century America: A Critical History provides a panoramic perspective of the types of anti-communists in the United States between 1919 and the collapse of the Soviet Union. It explains the causes and exceptional nature of anti-communism in the United States, and divides it into eight discrete categories. This title then thoroughly examines the words and deeds of the various anti-Communists in each of these categories during the three "Red Scares" in the past century. The work concludes with an unapologetic assessment of domestic anti-communism. This book allows readers to more fully comprehend what the anti-communists meant with their rhetoric, and grasp their impact on the United States during the 20th century and beyond—for example, how anti-communism has reappeared as anti-terrorism.
