Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of the Soul Few conceptions can Show the universality and permanence, the creative power and morphological influence which have characterised throughout history the Idea of the Soul. To it we owe the conception of an order of spiritual beings, and of a spiritual world existing now and hereafter. At some relatively late stage of culture it became absolute in the idea of God. It is thus the basis of all religion. One typical case may be cited. The highest authority on the religions of China concludes that the human soul is the original form of all beings of a higher order. Its worship is the basis of religion in that country. Taoism was originally a compendium of customs and practices framed upon the prevailing ideas concerning the human soul. It cast these into a system of philosophy, alchemy, and religion. But neither its origin nor its influence is confined to the religious Sphere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Soul I have given this book the title it bears because it describes, as accurately as any other, the main idea and contents of it. The topics discussed are varied, but they are all gates into the same field. They come back, like radii from a circumference, towards one centre. The object sought in them all has been, starting from these different standpoints, to pene trate the mystery of the soul of its life, its faculties, its possibilities, its relation to God, man and the universe. I offer no reasoned philosophy of the theme far less a theology. The most I can hope for is that my readers may find here some material for both; material for suggestion if nothing more. I have written under the conviction that there is nothing that is happening in the crowded field of modern life but finds its explanation in our spiritual condition; that no one of our pressing problems, whether of labour unrest, of religious difficulty, of social reorganisation, but must seek its solution in the recesses of the soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Concept of the Human Soul: According to Saint Augustine The aim of this dissertation is to present and explain the concept of the human soul as it is found in the writings of Saint Augustine. The soul of man was for Saint Augustine an object of life-long study and investigation. He was not particularly concerned about the soul as such, the plant soul, or the irrational soul of the brute, except insofar as a study of these might serve to throw some light on the nature and activities of the human soul. His interest in the soul of man was not actuated by mere curiosity to know for the sake of knowing, but he sought to know the human soul as a means whereby he might arrive at a clearer and better understanding of the Supreme Being. The concept of the human soul as it appears in the writings of Saint Augustine is not set forth in a systematic manner, but the elements that enter into its make-up are found widely scattered through his various philosophical, apologetical, polemical, exegetical, and dogmatical works. He wrote a few special treatises on the human soul, but he never attempted to construct an organized philosophy of the soul. The present thesis proposes to collect and coordinate the philosophical fragments of Saint Augustine's doctrine of the human soul and to interpret these in the light of his mental progress. There is a tendency on the part of some commentators to over-emphasize the Platonic character of Augustine's doctrine of the human soul. It is true that those works which were published during the first few years of his career manifest the strong influence of his recent study of Neo-Platonism. The treatises, however, which belong to that period when he was Bishop of Hippo and one of the most renowned scholars of his day stamp him unquestionably as a Christian philospoher. It is indispensable to the correct understanding of Augustine's concept of the human soul that due regard be paid to the development which characterizes his doctrine. What is said concerning Plato, Kant and Hegel has been drawn, largely, from the standard His tories of Philosophy and from the published Lives of these men. The brilliant sketch of the History of Philosophy forming Ludwig Noire's Introduction to Max Muller's translation of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, has been freely used, as it seemed to leave nothing want ing as a clear and adequate résumé of the history and trend of thought from the earliest times to the days of Kant. To Prof. Simon N. Patten's Development of English Thought is due a debt for a working basis in seeking the origin and cause of the particular development of Ideas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason and Dogma: Or Footprints of a Soul Calamity, distress, want, fear, praise, awe, and won der are the foundation - stones of all early religious tem ples, and the chief impulses to all primitive devotional acts. Nor have these forces lost their sway today, for over minds Of low degree they always have control. But as one advances in the scale of civilization, becomes ac quainted with the laws of nature and his own being, he becomes more and more free from the tyranny of fear, yielding to the voice of reason only, or to the sweet com mands of love and duty. The noble soul can never re ceive nor offer services given for the sake of reward, or with the hope Of escaping punishment; but such a man yields his whole being to the drawings of love or to the sense of conscious duty. It is evident, therefore, that among all religious motives these two are incomparably the highest and noblest; and being highest and best, the soul that yields to them is doubly blest: he is happy in the service he renders, and the service itself ennobles his being. To get the noble man's service, therefore, he must be reasonably appealed to on the ground of duty or love, and not on those of fear or favor. The fact that the average appeal of the Christian pulpit is not made on the grounds of duty or love, shows in general the quality of the minds to whom the appeal is made, and the vicious character of the creed on which the appeal is founded.
