Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hygiene of the Schoolroom The aim of the author in writing this book is to place in the hands of educators and others interested in child life trustworthy knowledge of the means of conserving the health of those entrusted to their care. Compulsory education, in this country, is almost universal, and it should be the duty of the authorities to see that in the schools which children are required to attend nothing of an unhygienic nature exists. It is the truth, however, that until very recently little attention was given to the physical side of the child's nature, and that in the schoolroom the fundamental principles of hygiene were very little understood - at least were not practised. Schools are notably institutions for giving a rather narrow type of intel lectual memoriter training. Their houses have been erected on small plots of land little larger than is needed for the buildings themselves, and have not taken into consideration the importance of play and outd001 physical education; they have provided one or more class rooms in a building with seats screwed to the floor and arranged for sedentary book reading; they have provided teachers who to a large extent are unlearned in the physiological aspects of children and of education. In many cases, as very recent school health surveys are appallingly illustrating, they have failed to provide in this library-school room even the first ele ments of adequate sanitation and hygiene. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Hygiene An Important Subject - There is a wide-spread Opinion among medical men, that children dur ing school years are subject to grave dangers to health; that these dangers, many of them at least, are closely related to school attendance; that they are avoidable, and ought to receive more attention at the hands of teachers and boards of control. Diseases to which Pupils are Subject - From nu hygienic conditions in the school-room and its immediate surroundings we have headaches, nervous ailments and nervous exhaustion, ini paired eyes, consumption, and other diseases, arising from improper and deficient ventilation, diseases arising from insufficient and excessive heating, from conditions of uncleanliness, from improper, excessive, and insufficient physical exercise, and from exposure to contagion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Hygiene of the School Child This book on mental hygiene is designed primarily for teachers, and the applications that it makes of mental hygiene principles refer primarily to school situations. Mental hygiene is a new and welcome point of View in education, representing the convergence of several streams of thought. As the name implies, it is a part of the great field of hygiene which emphasizes the well-being of the indi vidual. It crystallizes newer curriculum tendencies which stress adjustment and integration of the personality as Important goals of education. It makes possible the conservation of the interests of the whole child which the departmentalization of schools has threatened. It pro vides for the transfer to the school, in part, of the last remnant of child training that has been the exclusive prerogative of the home. It focuses attention anew on the problem of discipline, making application of all' that has been gleaned from recent developments in psychology and the study of the personality. Whereas this book is designed primarily to interpret the meaning of mental hygiene for teachers, the principles discussed, to be really effective, must have been practiced in early childhood and ought to be the possession of every parent as well as of teachers. The conserva tion Of human health and happiness is beginning to receive due consideration. The national government has put itself on record as favoring the preservation of its national wealth by instituting measures to prevent disease, main tain health and prolong the life of its citizens. One and a half million of our citizens die' annually, and authorities on hygiene agree that a quarter-million of these lives are sacrifices to the gods of ignorance, carelessness and avarice. They are not wholly so, however; and it is a teacher's duty to discourage working in improper hours. Still more imperatively is it his duty to regulate the child's needs in school-time, to see if he is faint from want of food. To encourage and teach good habits, and to give opportunity for bodily exercise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Hygiene, From the Pre-School Period to the University This volume is an attempt to bring together in organized form the latest information and advice of leading specialists in all the large phases of the subject. The hygiene of chil dren from the standpoint of the school in its relationship to the home and community, from the pre-school period up through the college, is sketched in such detail as is possible in so comprehensive a volume. There has been a constant temptation to add chapters on many new phases of the school health movement, but the editor has tried to limit himself to certain minimum essentials, and to give references to the voluminous literature which treats at length the many topics discussed here only briefly. Each chapter and parts of many chapters easily furnish topics for much-needed books, some of which have already been provided by contributors to the volume. Effort has been made to lead the reader on from these condensed statements to the monographic literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Hygiene: A Paper Read Before the New York Academy of Medicine, June 19, 1873 Viewing the question in the abstract, therefore, I should say that intellectual occupation or work is not inimical to the development of the infant mind; on the contrary, it is the very condition of that development. When Nature's processes are followed, the acquisition Of knowledge, far from being a hateful task for the child, is a delightful occupation. But it will be said that our system of education is fixed and practically unalterable, and that if it has its disadvantages these must be borne with. It does, indeed, look as though only a very distant future would see that change in our educational system which every philosophical mind de 81198. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crowley's Hygiene of School Life The centre of social responsibility has Shifted from the adult to the child. Progress viewed from the point of View of the former has been halting and in many directions disappointing: the change of the focus to the child has made a vast - an almost incalculable - change in the outlook. Seeming impossibilities find a solution there, Optimism replaces pessimism; that the child is father to the man remains no longer a mere empty sentiment, but has become a fact in the recognition of which must be found the groundwork of future social action. This change of viewpoint, it becomes evident, is a very radical one. Methods of dealing with children will vary greatly according to the standpoint from which the child is viewed, whether, as has been largely the case in the past, chiefly from the standpoint of the adult, or Whether attention is primarily given to its own laws of physical and mental development. The View that each child must be considered as an indivisible whole, Whose physical, mental, and moral development can never be considered apart, the unfolding of whose life therefore must be in harmony with the teaching of physiology and the laws of brain development, forms the theoretical, the scientific call, for medical inspection. This, however, has not been, directly at any rate, the motive force in bringing about medical inspection. The motive force has been rather the failure, seen on all hands, of the methods of treatment of the child on the former lines, and into the history of the call from this point of View we must enter rather more fully. Before, however, recalling the steps taken in our own country, it will be useful to follow, though in only very brief outline, the history of the movement in continental and other countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of School Hygiene: For the Use of Teachers in Schools, With a Bibliography IT is a matter of practical experience that the Choice of a School-site can seldom be determined upon by hygienic con siderations solely. The munificence of some philanthropist, the proximity to residences of its scholars, and the value of the land, are among many of the potent factors one has been obliged to contend with, and necessity, rather than option, has thus but too often proved; the guiding rule.'
