By the time this is all over, she'll know what it's like to kill, or what it's like to die. Mia Morgan doesn't let anything get to her. After freeing herself from an obsessive boss and saving loved ones from a serial killer, she feels like she can handle anything life throws at her. But now that killer – a deranged hunter who preys on women for sport – is coming for her. And if she runs, others will pay the price. As if that's not enough, Ben Bowden, the brilliant detective who has made her life hell for the past four years, has some insane plan to protect her. If she collaborates with him, Mia might just have to acknowledge her true feelings. But if she keeps him out, will she let the hunter win? Ben Bowden is sick of finding dead bodies. If being the lead detective on the biggest case in the country didn't come with enough pressure, now the psychopath Ben is chasing has Mia Morgan in his sights. And Mia doesn't want his help. She hasn't forgiven him for the past, and is being less than cooperative with his investigation. Protecting her is a challenge, and the sparks that fly whenever they're together aren't helping. But he has to make her trust him – somehow – because she has a plan that terrifies him to the bone. Can he convince her to work with him? Or will she risk everything to single–handedly turn the hunter into the hunted?

Book excerpt: In this compelling new installment of bestseller Ralph Compton's The Gunfighters series, a man driven by the destruction of his family seeks to protect a woman and her children from a band of desperados. John Stockbridge was once a peaceful man of medicine. Now, he's better known as Dr. Vengeance, a man who is as fast with a shotgun as any other gunfighter is with a six-gun. The murders of his wife and child left him with an aching hole where his soul once was. His only solace comes from wandering the West. Along the way, he encounters a woman and her two children searching for their missing fur-trapper husband/father in the Rockies. In the process, they run afoul of some foul former Confederates who have amassed money and local power by robbing those traveling west through a mountain pass. While searching for the missing trapper -- and aided by a Mexican mountain man and an independent woman who works at the local hotel-- Stockbridge must take down the vicious highwaymen one by one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century, Theodore Roosevelt, T. S. Van Dyke, and other elite men began describing their big-game hunting as “manly sport with the rifle.” They also began writing about their experiences, publishing hundreds of narratives of hunting and adventure in the popular press (and creating a new literary genre in the process). But why did so many of these big-game hunters publish? What was writing actually doing for them, and what did it do for readers? In exploring these questions, The Hunter Elite reveals new connections among hunting narratives, publishing, and the American conservation movement. Beginning in the 1880s these prolific hunter-writers told readers that big-game hunting was a test of self-restraint and “manly virtues,” and that it was not about violence. They also opposed their sportsmanlike hunting to the slaughtering of game by British imperialists, even as they hunted across North America and throughout the British Empire. Their references to Americanism and manliness appealed to traditional values, but they used very modern publishing technologies to sell their stories, and by 1900 they were reaching hundreds of thousands of readers every month. When hunter-writers took up conservation as a cause, they used that reach to rally popular support for the national parks and for legislation that restricted hunting in the US, Canada, and Newfoundland. The Hunter Elite is the first book to explore both the international nature of American hunting during this period and the essential contributions of hunting narratives and the publishing industry to the North American conservation movement.

She can hardly remember her family or past, and has lived in near solitude most of her life. But things are about to change. "This world I live in is full of danger no matter where I turn. " Daceria is half demon, hiding away deep in a forest, where she is safe. Her life is quiet and peaceful, if lonely, until a human man stumbles across her path. Blood ran down his face like rain falling from the midnight sky. She knows one thing for sure: never trust a human. But she is drawn to him for reasons she can't explain. He is handsome and charming, but the connection they share runs deeper than words, and she finds herself falling... "Everyone falls in love with someone, even people like you." Adam flies solo. He always has, and always will. That is what he tells his brother. But when he is attacked by demons, he stumbles into the home of a beautiful girl with wolf ears and a tail. Demons are evil--he has always known this, ever since the day his parents died. But Daceria challenges that belief, surprising him with her gentle ways and caution, and of course, plight--she is a rare creature, wanted by Demon Hunters who will stop at nothing to capture her. "Daceria I love you." When a sorceress's evil spell takes Adam away from her, Daceria must find a way to save him. To do that, she must unlock the hidden secrets of her past and discover what it truly means to be Ace's legacy. She is her family's last hope; she cannot fail. But she cannot succeed alone. Let the journey begin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Denali's majestic slopes to the Great Swamp of central New Jersey, protected wilderness areas make up nearly twenty percent of the parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and other public lands that cover a full fourth of the nation's territory. But wilderness is not only a place. It is also one of the most powerful and troublesome ideas in American environmental thought, representing everything from sublime beauty and patriotic inspiration to a countercultural ideal and an overextension of government authority. The Promise of Wilderness examines how the idea of wilderness has shaped the management of public lands since the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Wilderness preservation has engaged diverse groups of citizens, from hunters and ranchers to wildlife enthusiasts and hikers, as political advocates who have leveraged the resources of local and national groups toward a common goal. Turner demonstrates how these efforts have contributed to major shifts in modern American environmental politics, which have emerged not just in reaction to a new generation of environmental concerns, such as environmental justice and climate change, but also in response to changed debates over old conservation issues, such as public lands management. He also shows how battles over wilderness protection have influenced American politics more broadly, fueling disputes over the proper role of government, individual rights, and the interests of rural communities; giving rise to radical environmentalism; and playing an important role in the resurgence of the conservative movement, especially in the American West. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian King was honorably discharged from the United States Navy five years ago. He'd left with the highest honors a man can receive in his country, but he'd paid the ultimate price to earn them. He was considered one of the best; an Intelligence Officer in a Joint Special Operations Delta team that'd been a twelve-man wrecking crew. They'd thought they were invincible... until they weren't. Brian was the only member that survived the ambush. He survived ten months of pain, of torture, only to emerge on the other side a warrior. A POW survivor. He'd returned home with all his limbs, his right mind, and with his only brother Ford, at his side. But, one thing had been lost, maybe for good... his voice. Now, being a bounty hunter is Brian's only means to satisfy his need to calculate, track, and capture. His only outlet to the stress caused by his silence. He was good at what he did. But, all work and no play for a forty-four year old man was taking its toll. Brian wasn't a faulty experiment. He missed companionship, he missed communicating. So, when he met Sway Hamilton - in the most unconventional means - he'd been surprised at his special way of understanding Brian's every look... and touch. Sway grew up in the rough part of ATL, trailing behind his twin brother Stanton and his best friend, Dana. He and his brother had a bond only twins could understand. So when Stanton's life was taken during their sophomore year in college, Sway didn't think he'd ever recover. He finally finished school, got his masters in nursing, worked hard, and focused on taking care of his mother. However, Sway knew there was more to life than heartache, and caring for others. There had to be. But he didn't know what any of those things were until he met a dark hunter that blew his mind... and the intense man had never uttered a single word. Brian and Sway can feel the powerful connection between them. It was there from the start-but both of them have battled with loss and anguish for so long, neither understand that love can ease all of it. Do they have the courage to battle through it together? Sway has to learn to trust in love, and Brian has to believe that Sway will always understand him even if he never speaks again.
