Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of separate chapters and each of them has its own name that reflects the subject of its content. There are twenty five chapters in the book. The author was trying to make book as funny, entertaining and amusing as possible for different groups of people speaking English. Between its covers you will find a lot of information that reflects Russian life in the form of humor. Most jokes and anecdotes have been translated from Russian but some of them have been borrowed from English sources. Russian jokes were picked up from the author's friends and relatives, Russian TV and Internet radio programs, from Russian newspapers published in USA. Most of them are fresh and certainly reflect everyday life in Russia. Some jokes are related to the former Soviet Union. Readers, if you find some of the jokes inappropriate or abusive, just ignore them. It is well known that understanding foreign humor is often difficult for a number of reasons. Moreover, it takes time to completely understand some jokes because of the nature of the humor.

There is a stereotype of Russian man of being a protector. Of course, like many of the stereotypes, it does not apply to everyone and it is true to certain degree. There is a Russian saying «как за каменной спиной» (kak za kame`noy ste`noy) meaning “behind stone wall” that references Russian men in general. This topic is explored in the book. There are several caricatures included in the book that show military and police and anyone in uniform for that matter in a funny light. Another interesting aspect of Russian men is the friendships they develop with other men. These relationships are long lasting whether it is a best friend, neighbor, or drinking buddy. This is also reflected in the book. Daily Humor in Russian Life is the tenth book of fourteen in a series the author holds very dear to their heart. Collections in this book represent a look at women from the author’s point of view. Funny, with a great love for vodka and cigarettes, men’s stereotypes, and military or civilian characters are presented with great artistry and reflected in caricatures with such artistry, that you cannot help but laugh. Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War brought new opportunities to explore the long tradition and myriad uses of humour through over two centuries of Russian literature and culture. Reflective Laughter is the first book devoted to an overview of this subject. Bringing together contributions from a number of distinguished scholars from Russia, Europe and North America, this volume ranges from the classics of nineteenth-century literature through to the intellectual and popular comedic culture, both state-sponsored and official, of the twentieth-century, taking in journalism, propaganda, scholarly discourse, jokes, films and television. In doing so, it explores how our understanding remains distorted by the polarization of the East and West during the Cold War. This comprehensive and entertaining book will be of relevance to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Russian and comparative literature and in cultural studies, as well as a broader audience.

Excerpt: Russian jokes (Russian: (transcribed anekdoty), literally anecdotes), the most popular form of Russian humour, are short fictional stories or dialogues with a punch line. Russian joke culture includes a series of categories with fixed and highly familiar settings and characters. Surprising effects are achieved by an endless variety of plots. Russian jokes are on topics found everywhere in the world, be it sex, politics, spouse relations, or mothers-in-law. This article discusses Russian joke subjects that are peculiar to Russian or Soviet culture. Every category has a host of untranslatable jokes that rely on linguistic puns, wordplay, and Russian's vocabulary of foul language. Below, (L) marks jokes whose humor value critically depends on untranslatable features of the Russian language. A huge category is Russian political jokes. Vyacheslav Tikhonov as StirlitzStandartenfuhrer Stirlitz, alias Colonel Isayev is a character from the Soviet TV series "Seventeen Moments of Spring" (, based on a novel by Yulian Semyonov) played by the popular actor Vyacheslav Tikhonov about a fictional Soviet intelligence officer who infiltrates Nazi Germany. Stirlitz interacts with Nazi officials Walther Schellenberg, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Martin Bormann, Heinrich Muller. In the jokes he interacts with them as well as with fictional female radio operator Kat, Pastor Schlagg, Professor Pleischner and other characters in the series. Usually two-liners spoofing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his original new study, Seth Graham analyzes a rich and forgotten vein of humor in an otherwise bleak environment. The late Soviet period (1961–1986) hardly seems fertile ground for humor, but Russian jokes (anekdoty) about life in the Soviet Union were ubiquitous. The cultural and political relaxation in the decade following Stalin’s death produced considerable optimism among Soviet citizens. The anekdot exploited and exposed what Graham calls "Soviet diglossia" (official Sovietese vs. Russian everyday language) and emphasized the distance between official myths and quotidian reality. Jokes engaged a range of official and popular culture genres and also worked meta-textually, referring to the political consequences of jokes. While the dissidents of this period, who stressed the heroic and opposed everything Soviet, have been much written about, Graham’s work on the anekdoty—written in the third person, ironic, and engaged with everything Soviet—fills a hole that has been overlooked in cultural history.
