Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of a Huguenot Family The history of the little work now in the reader's hands, is briefly this. Among the private documents, belonging to one of the most respectable families under the parochial charge of the present writer, there has long been preserved, with pious care, a manuscript autobiography of one of its ancestors, who, as a persecuted Huguenot, endured much for the sake of his faith. It was the labour of his latter days to prepare for his descendants the record alluded to, as a memorial of his gratitude for the Providence that had sustained him in many dangers and trials, and as an admonition to his posterity to adhere to the faith for which their forefathers hazarded life. The work, which extended to several hundred pages, was written in the French language, and without any view to publication. In the friendly confidence growing out of parochial relations, the existence of this manuscript became known to the writer of this introduction. Curiosity led to its examination; the strange and interesting nature of the incidents it recorded, related as they were with unpretending simplicity, soon fixed his attention. It struck him as being a vivid picture of by-gone times sketched by an honest eye witness; and the page of past history thus illustrated was not the least interesting in the records of Protestantism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenot, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale of the French Protestants Albert of Morseiul saw that Clemence was much moved, and he prepared to soothe her by every means in his power. The only effica cions means being to draw her attention to ordinary things. Let me offer you my arm, he said in a kindly tone and leading her on, he spoke of the beauty of the morning, and then of Anette de Marville, and then of other in different things. Clemence seemed to under stand his object; and though she at first smiled, as if to intimate that she did so, she gave her mind up to his guidance, and for five or ten minutes touched upon no subject but the most ordinary topics of conversation. As they ap proached the rampart, however, and she had an opportunity of looking along it, and ascertain ing that there was no one there, she said. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenot, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale of the French Protestants I will not trouble you or the public With any reasoning upon the general conduct of the story Why I suddenly changed the scene here, or flew off to another character there, why I gave but a glimpse of such a personage, or dwelt long and minutely upon another. I believe and trust that those Who read the work attentively will discover strong reasons for all such proceedings, and I am quite sure that much thought and care was bestowed on each step of the kind before it was taken. Your own good taste will decide whether I was right or wrong, and blame or approve, I know, what ever I might plead. The public will do so also and, as a general rule, I think it best to conceal, as far as possible, in all cases, the machinery of a composition of this kind, suffering the wheels to produce their effect without being publicly exhibited. Yet there are enough records left to prove, that a similar noble spirit animated the Huguenots in America. From this most interesting manuscript, I have been permitted to extract the following pas sage not inserted in the printed edition. I give part of it in the old French, that the arduous work of the translator may be appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doubtless one of the scarcest Huguenot studies and yet unquestionably a classic, Lee's "Huguenots in France and America" is essentially a history rather than a treatise on emigration or a list of names, with primary emphasis on the exposition of facts and notable events. It is an exhaustive account of the origins of the Huguenots in France, their persecution and their subsequent flight, embracing sketches of many leading contemporaries and an account of the Reformation of the church in Europe and kindred circumstances resulting in the rise of French Protestantism. Particularly close attention is given to the major events leading to the Huguenot dispersion to England, Holland, Germany, and America; namely, the St. Bartholomew Massacre (1572), the assassination of King Henry IV (1610), and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). An important section of nearly 100 pages is devoted to the Huguenots of America, with emphasis on the formidable Huguenot settlements at Oxford (Mass.), New Rochelle (N.Y.), New Paltz (N.Y.), Frenchtown (R.I.), and Jamestown (S.C.). The work further contains a "List of the Names of Huguenot Families in America," documenting the arrival in Boston of those families who later settled in Maine, New York, and Rhode Island; and the names of those who settled in the South, including the settlement on the Santee River in South Carolina.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Huguenot Family in the XVI Century: The Memoirs of Philippe Du Mornay, Soeur Du Plessis Marly Those who read them in the present day could Often wish for more details, for a fuller mention of the little things which more than anything else transform the past into the present. But the son, for whose sake the story was chiefly written, knew all these common things for himself. He had been born in the midst of civil war and grew up in a clash and turmoil which wellnigh led to the very disintegration of the kingdom of France; but through the fury of public affairs all the ordinary things went on, all the daily routine of living, and the only regret is that the writer of the memoirs thought these homely matters so little worth relating. Thus many things remain Obscure for present-day readers which were too obvious to need a mention nearly four hundred years ago, and it is not only the language, with its page long sentences and use of now Obsolete words, which may present difliculties to them. Something more than translation is needed for those who have made no special study of the time, some slight aid to render the memoirs as vivid in modern days as they were to those who had lived through the scenes they describe.
