Book excerpt: Edward Sylvester Ellis (April 11, 1840 - June 20, 1916) was an American author who was born in Ohio and died at Cliff Island, Maine. Ellis was a teacher, school administrator, journalist, and the author of hundreds of books and magazine articles[3] that he produced by his name and by a number of noms de plume. Notable fiction stories by Ellis include The Steam Man of the Prairies and Seth Jones, or the Captives of the Frontier. Internationally, Edward S. Ellis is probably known best for his Deerfoot novels read widely by young boys until the 1950s.Seth Jones was the most significant of early dime novels of publishers Beadle and Adams. It is said that Seth Jones was one of Abraham Lincoln's favorite stories. During the mid-1880s, after a fiction-writing career of some thirty years, Ellis eventually began composing more serious works of biography, history, and persuasive writing. Of note was "The Life of Colonel David Crockett," which had the story of Davy Crockett giving a speech usually called "Not Yours To Give." It was a speech in opposition to awarding money to a Navy widow on the grounds that Congress had no Constitutional mandate to give charity. It was said to have been inspired by Crockett's meeting with a Horatio Bunce, a much quoted man in Libertarian circles, but one for whom historical evidence is non-existent.

An insight of the book; There was good cause for these exclamations upon the part of the Yankee and Irishman, as they stood on the margin of Wolf Ravine, and gazed off over the prairie. Several miles to the north, something like a gigantic man could be seen approaching, apparently at a rapid gait for a few seconds, when it slackened its speed, until it scarcely moved Occasionally it changed its course, so that it went nearly at right angles. At such times, its colossal proportions were brought out in full relief, looking like some Titan as it took its giant strides over the prairie...........

'By the Jumping Jehosiphat, naow if that don't, beat all natur'!' 'It's the divil, broke loose, wid full steam on!' There was good cause for these exclamations upon the part of the Yankee and Irishman, as they stood on the margin of Wolf Ravine, and gazed off over the prairie. Several miles to the north, something like a gigantic man could be seen approaching, apparently at a rapid gait for a few seconds, when it slackened its speed, until it scarcely moved. Occasionally it changed its course, so that it went nearly at right angles. At such times, its colossal proportions were brought out in full relief, looking like some Titan as it took its giant strides over the prairie. The distance was too great to scrutinize the phenomenon closely; but they could see that a black volume of smoke issued either from its mouth or the top of its head, while it was drawing behind it a sort of carriage, in which a single man was seated, who appeared to control the movements of the extraordinary being in front of him.

Book excerpt: There was good cause for these exclamations upon the part of the Yankee and Irishman, as they stood on the margin of Wolf Ravine, and gazed off over the prairie. No wonder that something like superstitious have filled the breasts of the two men who had ceased hunting for gold, for a few minutes, to view the singular apparition; for such a thing had scarcely been dreamed of at that day, by the most imaginative philosophers; much less had it ever entered the head of these two men on the western prairies. 'Begorrah, but it's the ould divil, hitched to his throttin 'waging, wid his ould wife howlding the reins!' exclaimed Mickey, who had scarcely removed his eyes from the singular object. 'That there critter in the wagon is a man,' said Hopkins, looking as intently in the same direction. 'It seems to me,' he added, a moment later, 'that there's somebody else a-sit-ting alongside of him, either a dog or a boy. Wal, naow, ain't that queer?' 'Begorrah! begorrah! do ye hear that? What shall we do?' At that instant, a shriek like that of some agonized giant came home to them across the plains, and both looked around, as if about to flee in terror; but the curiosity of the Yankee restrained him. His practical eye saw that whatever it might be, it was a human contrivance, and there could be nothing supernatural about it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Huge Hunter Edward sylvester ellis 53 years before the word "robot" was introduced to the English language, 27 years before H.G. Wells wrote "The Time Machine" and 35 years before the Wright Brothers historic flight and Ford's first Model A there was "THE STEAM MAN of the PRAIRIES." "The Steam Man of the Prairies" was the first example of a mechanical man in literature. "The Steam Man of the Prairies" was one of the first American science fiction novels. "The Steam Man of the Prairies" was the forerunner of Steampunk and Edisonade literature. Written by prolific American author Edward S. Ellis, "Huge Hunter or Steam Man of the Prairies" was so popular, it inspired a number of sequels ... and now, you can read it just as it was presented over 100 years ago. Written at a time when the western United States was really wild: just 3 years after the US Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant is the new US President, and the First Transcontinental Railroad is a year from being complete; Jesse James is robbing trains and the so-called "Indian Wars" are in full swing (it's about 8 years before the Battle of Little Big Horn [Custer's Last Stand]). And onto the scene appears a man that's a machine made of metal and powered by steam! Until "The Steam Man of the Prairies," no published work had ever conceived of this wonderfully fantastic idea. Enjoy going back in time to experience a true original ... the first of its kind: "The Steam Man of the Prairies." NOTE: This edition of "The Huge Hunter or The Steam Man of the Prairies" includes a publishers preface along with the original text from the late 19th century. The original novel was reprinted six times from 1868 to 1904. The only known copy of the first 1868 printing with its cover intact is owned by the Rosenbach Museum and Library, Philadelphia, PA. Curated for quality by Edward S. Ellis great-great grandson, this book has been extensively reviewed in an attempt to remove imperfections introduced by the transcription and/or digitization process. Though best efforts have been made, this book might have an occasional error that should not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have reissued it in print as part of a continuing commitment to the preservation of the work of prolific American author Edward S. Ellis. This collection features three exciting tales from the "Edisonade" genre, in which "whiz kid" inventors and their steam- or electric-powered creations were the heroes: The Steam Man of the Prairies (1868) is considered to be the first Edisonade and the first American science fiction dime novel. Frank Reade and His Steam Horse (1882) features Frank Reade, one of the most prolific and best known Edisonade heroes. In Jack Wright and His Electric Stage (1894), an inventor pursues the Jesse James Gang in his electric-powered stagecoach. Although the Edisonade tends to be classified as science fiction, many have elements of the Western, detective story, and adventure tales that serve as significant inspiration for today's Steampunk genre.
