Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charlatan Alicks Sly murdered his wife, Ellie, and killed himself with a cut-throat razor in a house in Sydney's Newtown in early 1904, leaving their children to a wretched fate. He wasn't the only man to murder his wife - or try - that year. Life in the big city could be harsh and brutal, and so could marriage. Sociologist Tanya Bretherton traces the brutal story of Ellie, one of several murderer's brides in turn-of-the-century Sydney; of her husband, Alicks, and his family; and their three orphaned sons, adrift in the world. From the author of the acclaimed THE SUITCASE BABY - shortlisted for the 2018 Ned Kelly Award, Danger Prize and Waverley Library 'Nib' Award - comes another riveting true-crime case from Australia's dark past. THE MURDERER'S BRIDE is a masterful exploration of criminality, insanity, violence and bloody family ties in bleak, post-Victorian Sydney. **Includes an extract from THE SUITCASE BABY and an extract from Tanya Bretherton's latest fascinating true-crime story, THE KILLING STREETS**

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Alicia, is the self-confessed light of her father's life. But the much loved and beautiful daughter of Lord and Lady Pavier, of the noble House of Wingrave, is set to disoblige her family in marriage when she rejects the fabulously wealthy, Lord Biggins... the brilliant match the family craved. A dash to Gretna Green, finds Lady Alicia disinherited… and the newly married pair are forced to flee England to escape his lordship's wrath. Some years later, the couple's only child, Ella, is left an orphan and the four-year-old girl is now alone in the world. Although unwanted by the noble Wingrave family, the girl is nonetheless taken in… and Ella must learn to negotiate her way… with a family who will neither forgive nor forget: but indeed, seems determined to extend only enmity towards the child. While quietly employed in a teaching post at a Parish charity school, the twenty-one-year-old Ella is once again recalled to the family home, historic Deems Castle, only for Ella to discover she is to be cast as a reluctant bride in marriage the following morning, to a Frenchman unknown to her. To banish Ella from English shores, seems the family's coup de grace: the finishing stroke, against a girl innocent of any charge. This is a story of intrigue, love and loyalty… more especially when, at the time of the fear and turbulence of the French Revolution, the truest love can be over-shadowed by death.
Book Synopsis All Our Happy Days Are Stupid by : Sheila Heti
Download or read book All Our Happy Days Are Stupid written by Sheila Heti and published by McSweeney's. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two couples, each with a twelve-year-old child, travel to Paris; within a few moments of discovering each other in a crowd, one of their children disappears. A day later, one of the mothers disappears, too. The story that follows is a wonderfully strange, beautifully composed examination of happiness and desperation, complete with a man in a bear suit, a teen pop star, and eight really excellent songs. Sheila Heti’s debut play was first commissioned in 2001, for a feminist theater company that never ended up staging it. Its turbulent creation became the backdrop of Heti’s last novel, How Should a Person Be?, which was named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times and the New Yorker—and now the play itself can be revealed at last. With new introductions by Sheila Heti and director Jordan Tannahill, All Our Happy Days Are Stupid offers a novel’s worth of wisdom and humor, of wild hope and dreamlike confrontations, and page after page of unforgettable lines. Seen until now only by a lucky few, its publication is a cause for celebration.

Book excerpt: “Threats obviously won’t work, so be ready, love. I’m going to charm your cute little ass right down the aisle.” Drake Foster had always enjoyed life to its fullest, feeding his insatiable hunger for the opposite sex as the primary of the Dallas Rogues. When the beautiful former actress, Shea Johnson, returned to Lewisville, he couldn’t forget their one encounter, shady as it was, and now that he’d set his sights on her, he intended to pursue her like he did everything else in life—with undisputable passion. “Charm all you want. I’m not marrying you.” Shay Jameson, also known as the actress, Shea Johnson, wasn’t about to be intimidated by the annoying billionaire entrepreneur, Drake Foster. Who the devil did he think he was to accuse her of being the reason his fiancée left him at the church door? And he had the audacity to demand that she owed him a bride, and he was there to collect on her debt. Try as she might, she couldn’t resist his magnetism, not to mention his gorgeous muscled physique … especially once she was reintroduced to … SERGEANT MAJOR. “Do you always make a habit of arriving uninvited, Miss Kent?” When the unexpected appearance of a reporter from Drake's past awakened feelings he’d never expected, he found himself smack in the middle of a love triangle … or was he confusing sexual attraction with something more? No matter how hard he tried to keep his distance from her, he kept spiraling deeper into a well of doubt. To add fuel to the fire, a ghost from Shay’s past arrived to further the destruction of their future. Would Shay ever be able to trust Drake again, and as she pushed him away, would Drake be able to keep her safe from the skeletons in her closet? Above all … would SERGEANT MAJOR―the randy bastard―be satisfied with the monogamy of marriage? Editor's Note: Charmed Bride delivers an authentic, heartfelt, funny, and sexy adventure. Adversaries to lovers to more with betrayal and danger sprinkled into the mix and a healthy dose of "Sergeant Major" makes for a very satisfying read. AUTHOR NOTE: Although the book can be read as a standalone, for better entertainment and understanding of historic information of the two main characters, book 2, Captured Bride and book 3, Chosen Bride, should be read first.

Book Synopsis Great American Hoteliers by : Stanley Turkel
Download or read book Great American Hoteliers written by Stanley Turkel and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the thirty years prior to the Civil War, Americans built hotels larger and more ostentatious than any in the rest of the world. These hotels were inextricably intertwined with American culture and customs but were accessible to average citizens. As Jefferson Williamson wrote in "The American Hotel" ( Knopf 1930), hotels were perhaps "the most distinctively American of all our institutions for they were nourished and brought to flower solely in American soil and borrowed practically nothing from abroad". Development of hotels was stimulated by the confluence of travel, tourism and transportation. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad engendered hotels by Henry Flagler, Fred Harvey, George Pullman and Henry Plant. The Lincoln Highway and the Interstate Highway System triggered hotel development by Carl Fisher, Ellsworth Statler, Kemmons Wilson and Howard Johnson. The airplane stimulated Juan Trippe, John Bowman, Conrad Hilton, Ernest Henderson, A.M. Sonnabend and John Hammons.. My research into the lives of these great hoteliers reveals that none of them grew up in the hospitality business but became successful through their intense on-the- job experiences. My investigation has uncovered remarkable and startling true stories about these pioneers, some of whom are well-known and others who are lost in the dustbin of history.
