S. lat., lies an island which is conjectured to be about 150 miles long and 70 miles broad. The approach to it from the north is rendered extremely difficult by a number of parallel reefs of coral formation, which lurk treacherously at no great depth beneath the surface of the water. There are, however, a few narrow and tortuous channels, just deep enough to float a large boat of moderate draught. The beach, which is covered at high tide, consists of a broad belt of shining sand, or, rather, minute shells, of a rosy hue, beyond which basaltic rocks, varying from 40 ft. to 100 ft. in height rise sheer above the sea. The interior of the country presents the appearance of a vast park of gentle undulating surface, interspersed with groups of lofty forest trees, copses of flowering and fragrant shrubs, and rich parterres of flowers of every form and hue.
