Besides de voting much of his time and attentions to Dorothy and playing the part of Richard Heatherly in the play, he was one of the most prominent members of the track team. The boys, peor at sighting, must needs endeavor to have something that could be seen at least at one mil'e s distance, and immediately voted for peacock blue (imagine it!) It is dreadful to think what might have happened if the regiment, composed for the most part of girls and a few artistic souls, had not come to the rescue and obtained the right color for their standard - garnet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tipyn O'bob, Vol. 15: October, 1917 Briefly there is very little to be said in favor of beginning to wear a gown. The beautifully uniform appearance which the campus would present, the academic atmosphere, the graceful, flowing lines, have all been SO often and so eloquently described that no one dares mention them again. Even the more plebeian and less aesthetic facts, that we have all voted to wear gowns, that their constant use would bring poverty upon the Wilson-laundry-family, that they are unparalleled as water proofs, that these four years are the only time they can be worn; even these have failed to incline the undergraduate heart gown-ward. For these other facts remain. Gowns catch in every door, they trip up ten people on every stairway, they Slide down the neck at every step, they trail in every ink well. They make the tall, Slender figure look positively emaciated; and even one who has never seen the picture can well imagine the effect produced by the short and stumpy person who wears a heavy coat in winter and then superimposes a gown. But at least this much can be said for the gown. It gives the beginner in its use something to grumble about in those long harrowing moments between breakfast and nine O'clock; and that after all is a greater boon than it seems at first Sight. It is an excellent thing to have a gown to abuse when one must abuse. It spares the room-mate and promotes friendly feelings. But after awhile even this advantage will be taken away. For some unknown reason, everyone who wears a gown steadily for a couple Of weeks comes to be one Of those devotees who speak SO tenderly and SO incomprehensibly to their unconverted friends about academic atmosphere and laundry, never mentioning ink wells or obtrusive doors. All that is necessary is a habit: and a habit is not always a dangerous thing. Much smooth repetition Of a collegiate platitude prompts reaction in favour Of an Old cast-off, whose place it has come to fill. It is so very easy to point the finger Of scorn at grinds, SO easy to fortify ourselves against their attitude by the usual current half-truths. We are glib in a wisdom which must have been useful once, in checking a dangerous tendency, but from which the virtue is beginning to depart. After all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orion: May, 1917 From the first I had liked the boy, a boy I call him, for he seemed so boyish, so youthful, so innocent. Before long, a deep friendship had developed. At recreation time we took long tramps together over the hills and meadows of the island. The place which had before seemed deso late, was soon transformed into a sort of celestial garden of nature. It was Pedro (that was what we called him) that brought the revelation to me. He was a deep and close communist with nature. Every flower seemed to him a human soul, a. Link between God and man. Some times his thoughts about God and humanity were so far away from me, so vague that I couldn't understand him. But although he was a little too deep for me, I appreciated, valued his friendship none the less. As I think of it now, his friendship was like the perfume of some flower, a flower that is so sweet, though vague, as if it were veiled so that we cannot tell where it is and from whence the fragrance comes, and then about the time we from its perfume have almost distinguished what it is, the perfume seems to diffuse into varied other sensations. In those tramps together, he never talked much. His nature was not of that kin-d. His thoughts seemed to speak, to fill the vacancy. It was only the noisy breakers when they came roaring and clashing against the shore that would wake him from his revery. How often have I heard him as he looked out at the turbulent waters, quote lines beginning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Concordian, 1917 After a few days of exploration, we reached the conclusion that Toonerville - or wherever we hailed from - was better than Fort Wayne, even if it didn't have paved streets and street cars, and that home was better than Concordia, even if it didn't have shower baths and electric lights. Accordingly, we flooded the mails between Fort Wayne and our home towns until we might be said to live at home. Physically, we were in Fort Wayne; mentally, we were at home. This division of body and mind gave rise to what, in high school Latin is called 'morbus domi, ' otherwise 'homesickness.' Just when we were about to do something desperate - we didn't know just what - the thought occurred to us that we could go home at Christmas! There upon our desperation vanished and we decided to remain at Concordia till then. Perhaps we wouldn't have to come back after the holidays!
