Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homesteaders: A Novel of the Canadian West IX little slates clattered into place, and six little figures stood erect between their benches. Right! Turn! Said the master. March! School is dismissed; and six pairs Of bare little legs twinkled along the aisle, across the well worn threshold, down the big stone step, and into the dusty road, warm with the rays of the Indian summer sun. The master watched them from the Open window until they vanished behind a ridge of beech trees that cut his vision from the con cession. While they remained within sight a smile played upon the features Of his strong, sun-burned face, but as the last little calico dress was swallowed by the wood the smile died down, and for a moment he stood, a grave and thoughtful statue framed within the white pine casings Of the sash. His sober grey eyes stared unseeing into the forest, while the light wind that stirred the golden maple leaves toyed gently with his unruly locks. Book Synopsis The Old Homestead (Classic Reprint) by : Mrs. Ann S. Stephens
Download or read book The Old Homestead (Classic Reprint) written by Mrs. Ann S. Stephens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Homestead In presenting another book to the public, I find it necessary to say, that the scenes described in the first portion are laid some years back, when the city institutions were directed by the Board of Aldermen and Assistants, and when every office - even to the Medical Board - was a direct political appointment. Many of the scenes through which I have led the characters of my story, owe nothing, whatever, to the imagination. They have been painful realities. Wishing to blend some benefit to humanity with any power to confer amusement which my writings may possess, I have introduced imaginary characters into real scenes, witnessed in some instances by my own eyes, while in others I have the authority of one who died a martyr to his labors in these very institutions, and is now an angel in heaven. If the truth in this book serves to draw popular attention to the solemn trust imposed in these city charities, my first object will be accomplished; for the great popular heart of America is full of just aspiration, and I would gladly turn it benevolently toward institutions where so much of human misfortune and misery are concentrated. I am not one of those who contend that women should ever become law-makers, save in the household and social life; but it is their peculiar duty to feel for the suffering, and every true woman inherits the feeling as an intuition which leaves the word duty far out of sight. It is her province to feel, to think, to act for the poor, and even beyond that, it is perfectly feminine to suggest. In this privilege of modest suggestion, if we could but understand it, lies an influence more beautiful and potent than the power we evoke. If he could earn some money or find out that, after all, money is n't everything or fall in love with some nice girl She checked herself, blushing and sighing. The blush was occasioned by her own quiet hap piness in that direction; but the sigh was because Aus tin, though he was well known to have been rather wild, never paid any nice girl the slightest atten tion, and jeered cynically at the mere suggestion that he should do so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dovecote, or the Heart of the Homestead People are all very much like birds, in so far as they are given to nest building. Some build nests of hopes, and perch them so high that little is the wonder the winds and rains beat them, in time, to pieces. Some build nests of fears, and, like the foolish ground birds of the pastures, squat them where they might most tremble for their being trod upon. Only a few, I ween, build nests of memories. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Old Homestead This is the story of my old Lorraine home, and I tell it, thinking it may be of interest to my children or to the children of others of the family. I have not attempted to give an elaborate family history, but have written of the early times in the old homestead and of some of the things that there took place, as I now remember them. If in this recital the personal pronoun occurs too often, it must be remembered that I am talking, principally, of my own recollections. Neither do I wish to convey the impression that the writer did any more than his proper share of the work or had more interesting experiences than others of the family. Indeed, being the youngest of a family of nine, it is more likely that he, the baby, had the easiest time of any, and, if any favors were shown, he got his full share. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northern Tier: Or Life Among the Homestead Settlers A desire to preserve in permanent form some of the memorable scenes and incidents that transpired during my observation of the first settlement of Northern Kansas and the homestead region, was the motive of the author in writing the following pages. These sheets were written during the interval between office hours, while I was engaged in the arduous duties of Receiver in the U. S. Land Office; and aware of defects, I trust this apology will be received kindly by friends among the early settlers, who I hope may be able to find something to interest and amuse them in these pages. Many of the incidents related came under my own observation; but I am indebted to others for much information, to whom I have endeavored to give credit in the proper place. The author.
