Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Book of Homeopathy, Vol. 1 I resign all pretence to any party stand point, since there should be no party in science, consequently none in Therapeutics; I desire, on the contrary, that every reproach and every attempt at contradiction should be sustained not only subjectively, but, as becomes every science, at least predominantly objectively. Aside from its contents, as indicated by the title, this work has also the intention to respond to the necessary though not easy demands of a medical logic elucidated by practical examples for opinions and those, unfortunately, mean nothing but faith in authorities separate physicians still more into hostile camps and paralyze medical activity wh ich were it united, would always be attended by the happiest results; these, however, are not attainable under such lamentable circumstances. The cause of this state of things clearly cannot lie in the subjects themselves about which medical factions contend, since these subjects stand to each other in the natural relation of cause and (feet, but is brought about by arbitrary conceptions thereof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homeopathic Principles and Practice of Medicine Another school, that Of the Astrologists, claimed to be guided by stars in the diagnosis Of disease and in the selection Of remedies, and SO popular was the theory, that it maintained its ground for many centuries against argument and ridicule. Probably the natural tendency of mankind to mystery had much to do towards keeping up this delusion. Besides, it flattered the self love Of men to believe that the stars in their courses watched over them, and that their health and sickness, their prosperity and adversity, were so intimately blended with the motions and positions of these celestial bodies. A practice which prevailed in the first centuries Of the Christian Era deserves a passing mention; namely, the impo sitiou Of hands and anointing with Oil by the elders Of the church as a means of cure for the sick. It was sanctioned and even commanded by the Apostle James, was practiced for several centuries, but finally fell into disuse except when occasionally revived by some enthusiast or 'charlatan, who claims to have Obtained this power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homoeopathic Theory and Practice of Medicine We say, therefore, to the true homoeopathist, let the grand max im of hahnemann, similia similibus curantur, be our prime and constant rule of medical faith and practice but never attempt to confine our doses within the narrow limits of the ultraists of either party, for the unanswerable reason, that the susceptibilities of the tissues to medicinal impressions vary in precise accordance with the degrees of in ammation and nervous erethism. From a con dition of health, or a slight irritation of the textures, up to a high point of in ammatory action, or nervous excitability, there are almost innumerable gradations of impressibility and he who would prescribe wisely and successfully, must select his attenuations, and order his repetitions with strict regard to these degrees. Of this subject we have treated at some length in chapter VII. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Homoeopathy, 1847, Vol. 1 The uncertainty'of the practice of medicine is an universal lamentation throughout the en tire profession, and the existence and tolerance of quack doctorsand quack, medicines is strong proof that the public know how little reliance can be placed in the ordinary method of treating diseases. Therefore, a reform is loudly de manded - the people demand it; and they are right, for they have the greatest interest at stake, it is their health and life which are concerned. But we ask, .how shall the practice of medicine be improved 2 must we fight and devour one another? Shall we denounce and ridicule every member of the profession who dares to suggest a change in the treatment of diseases? Shall we, in the face of the strongest evidence of the fact, hoot down every physician who may declare that the administration and repetition of large doses of drugs are injurious to health, and en dangerlife'l Is it reasonable, and will it pro mote the interests of the profession, for one mem ber of it to accuse another of hypocrisy because he professes to cure. The sick without emetics and cathartics'! Again, the imperfections of the healing art are a fruitful theme with the professors of our medical schools; and they very properly urge their students to exertion, to con tribute to the improvement of the treatment of diseases. And yet, in the face of this advice, there are professors who have denounced, as quacks, those who were their own pupils, merely because they avow their conversion to the doctrine of Hahnemann. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Medicine, Based Upon the Law of Homeopathy, Vol. 1 of 3 When first outlining the plan for this work, it was intended to have appended to each chapter the full bibliography of the subject therein treated. As the work progressed, it became evident that space must be closely economized, and, although the original size of the work was enlarged by the addition of a third volume, it has been impossible to carry out a custom which, in more than one respect, commends itself to the readers of scientific works. For the same reason, the large number of illustrations generally, and often unnecessarily, introduced into works of this kind was limited to a few excellent cuts really indispensable to the understanding of the topic which they illustrate. To the members of the editorial staff the general editor wishes to express his appreciation of the readiness and patience with which they have seconded his efforts to insure for this work a sphere of the largest possible usefulness; to their kindly support is due whatever success and friendly criticism these volumes may meet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Homoeopathic Theory and Practice: Designed for the Use of Physicians and Families Any two remedies may be combined, if highly poten tized, even antidotes. Experience shows that, if two antidotes are indicated in a case, they produce striking effects, zf given in combination. The explanation of this phenomenon is not difficult. I suppose that the pro cess of mixing does not apply to higher potencies, but that the two may assist each other in their mutual effects; but even this fact does not extend to antidotes which repel each other, and each of which pursues its own action to the end of the cure. This important discovery of the combination of drugs was first announced twenty-four years ago, by Doctor Julius Aegidi, at that time physician to the Princess Frederica of Prussia, and now medical counsellor. This discovery was communicated to Hahnemann in the year 1883, corroborated by two hundred and thirty-three cures with combined remedies, and was joyfully re ceived by Hahnemann, but kept secret from the public by the imbecility of the fees of truth, whereas the worthy discoverer was insulted and derided by those who were unworthy of unloosening his shoe-strings. Drawing on the experience and knowledge of a wealth of contributors, the book offers the foundations for the safe and broadest practice of modern homeopathy. Divided into 6 sections, this book takes the understanding of homeopathy from basic principles to the treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, the first prescription, and difficult, confused and hidden cases. Each section progresses through five themes broadly divided into philosophy, material medica, case taking, case analyses and case management. Each theme is woven together through the text and, section by section, builds into an essential study guide for the homeopathic student. It provides opportunities for reflection, and invites all practitioners to engage in their own personal and professional development.

This book helps to sort out the many nuances of old, and clarify much of the "older" jargon. It explains to the novice homeopath just how to begin taking a case and using the Repertory in practical terms. The author presents the subject in a very logical and understandable sequence. A subject that is normally difficult to master is easily grasped with the help of this book.
