Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Week "Let us lie in wait for the righteous; because he is not for our turn, and he is clean contrary to our doings: he upbraideth us with our offending the Law. "lie profcs seth to have the knowledge of God; and he calleth himself the child of the Lord. "He was made to reprove our thoughts. "He is grievous unto us even to behold: for his life is not like other men's; his ways are of another fashion. "We are esteemed of him as counterfeits: he abstained from out ways, as from filthiness: he pronounced the end of the just to be blessed, and maketh his boast that God is his Father. "Let us set if his words be true: and let us prove what shall happen in the end of him. "For if the just man be the son of God, He will help him; and deliver him from the hand of his enemies. "Let us examine him with despiteful ness and torture, that we may know his meekness, and prove his patience. "Let us condemn him with a shameful death: for by his own saying he shall be respected. "Such things did they imagine, and were deceived: for their own wickedness hath blinded them. "As for the mysteries of God, they knew them not." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Week That portion of the Divine office which is called Matins and Lauds is chanted publicly and with great solemnity on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Holy Week. This service is called the Tenebrae from the Latin word darkness, because this office was formerly celebrated during the night, and even when the hour was anticipated the name of Tenebrae was kept because although it began with daylight, it ended after the sun had set. It may be too that this office points to the times when the Christians lived in perse cution and concealment and consequently selected the night as the fittest time for the celebration of their sacred rites. Behold, thy King comet]: to thee. (st.john xii. I. What do' we mean by dignity? We mean some gift or quality that tends to raise him who possesses it above ordinary men. We speak of the dignity of a king or noble; of the still higher dignity of a priest. But there is no dignity like the dignity of suffering for God, and he who has suffered most for Him will have the highest dignity in Heaven. Hence merely by reason of His Sacred Passion, our Lord has the highest dignity in the whole Court of Heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient English Holy Week Ceremonial The spectacle presented to the eyes of the faithful in our English Churches in times anterior to the Reformation period in the Holy Season of Lent was one of exterior penitence. Not alone did the Church insist on the necessity of a sincere interior penitence, but also on the penance of the senses. Thus, in order that the minds of Her children should not be diverted from the sublime "Pagente of the Pacion" of Her Divine Lord and Master, She shrouded Her altars, and covered up with veils Her sacred pictures and images; hushed the notes of Her organs, and stilled the music of Her bells. It is intended first of all for the assistance of ministers, but it is believed that many teachers and other Chris tian people will find it also of service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ceremonies of Holy Week in Churches With Only One Priest For the use of small parishes, where it is impossible to carry out the full rites and ceremonies of Holy Week, Benedict XIII had a small Ritual compiled, the Memorials Rituum, which enables such parishes to have very simple services on the days of Holy Week. In churches, therefore, where there is only one priest, he is obliged to follow this small Ritual of Benedict XIII, if he wishes to hold services on the three last days of Holy Week. The following pages contain the directions laid down in this small Ritual by Benedict XIII. Paul's Cathedral in Holy Week, 1888 The first four of the addresses in the present volume were given in the earlier days of Holy Week, to an audience composed mainly of men, and were intended to be of a less popular, and at least implicitly of a more argumentative character, than those given on Good Friday. It seemed impossible to publish them without a few words of explanation, especially in reference to the last of the four addresses. The underlying assumption is that faith is the act of the whole man, and therefore that, if the revelation of God in Christ is a true object of faith, it must appeal to and claim the affections, the will, and the reason. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Friday to Easter Sunday These Sermons were written and preached just a quarter of a century ago. They were written to be spoken: to be spoken not carelessly nor coldly, but with the intense earnestness of absolute conviction, fanned to burning by the breathing of a divine message. To me, they seemed too intimate and too sacred to be cast into the rigid clasp of dull, dumb type to lie cold, motionless, lifeless, awaiting their literary doom from the sentence passed upon them by the curious or contemptuous eye of critic or of scoffer. Nevertheless, many of my friends urged me persistently to publish them, insisting that thus my work would bear far wider and more abundant fruit of help to others. As at last I yield to this advice, I recognise that if it is to be done at all, it were better that it were done at once. The poet's song is echoing in my ear in gentle, yet near, tone of warning: 'Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me.'
