Book excerpt: "The Holgate miscellany is a handwritten commonplace book created, probably, by William Holgate, who lived in and around Saffron Walden, Essex in the early seventeenth century. It is mainly poetry, but there is some prose. Noted poets include Donne, Shakespeare, Carew, Ralegh, and Jonson, as well as some lesser known poets such as Corbett, Strode, King, Drayton, Dekker, Wotton, and King James. Many poems — often anonymous — are published for the first time in this edition, and therefore give scholars a chance to write on works that have yet to receive any critical attention." --

Book Synopsis Manuscript Verse Collectors and the Politics of Anti-Courtly Love Poetry by : Joshua Eckhardt

This book was released on 2009-05-21 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reappraises the work of early-seventeenth-century collectors of English Renaissance poetry in manuscript. The verse miscellanies, or poetry anthologies, of these collectors have long attracted the attention of literary editors looking for texts by individual, major authors, and they have more recently interested historians for their poems on affairs of state, called verse libels. By contrast, this book investigates the relationships that the compilers of miscellanies established between such presumably literary and political texts. It focuses on two of the most popular, and least printable, literary genres that they collected: libels, and anti-courtly love poetry, a literary mode that the collectors of John Donne's poems played a major role in establishing. They made Donne the most popular poet in manuscripts of the period, and they demonstrated a special affinity for his most erotic or obscene poems, such as 'To his Mistress going to bed' and 'The Anagram'. Donne collectors also exhibited the similarities between these Ovidian love elegies and the sexually explicit or counter-Petrarchan verse of other authors, thereby organizing a literary genre opposed to the conventions of courtly love lyrics. Furthermore, collectors politicized this genre by relating examples of it to libels. In so doing, manuscript verse collectors demonstrated a type of literary and political activity distinct from that of authors, stationers, and readers. Based on a thorough investigation of manuscript verse miscellanies, the book appeals to scholars and students of early modern English literature and history, Donne studies, manuscript studies, and the history of the book.
Book Synopsis Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England by : Joshua Eckhardt
Download or read book Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England written by Joshua Eckhardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other kind of book, manuscript miscellanies require a complex and ’material’ reading strategy. This collection of essays engages the renewed and expanding interest in early modern English miscellanies, anthologies, and other compilations. Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England models and refines the study of these complicated collections. Several of its contributors question and redefine the terms we use to describe miscellanies and anthologies. Two senior scholars correct the misidentification of a scribe and, in so doing, uncover evidence of a Catholic, probably Jesuit, priest and community in a trio of manuscripts. Additional contributors show compilers interpreting, attributing, and arranging texts, as well as passively accepting others’ editorial decisions. While manuscript verse miscellanies remain appropriately central to the collection, several essays also involve print and prose, ranging from letters to sermons and even political prophesies. Using extensive textual and bibliographical evidence, the collection offers stimulating new readings of literature, politics, and religion in the early modern period, and promises to make important interventions in academic studies of the history of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of early modern texts, readings, and readers of Shakespeare's poems in print and manuscript, Reading Shakespeare's Poems in Early Modern England makes a compelling contribution both to Shakespeare studies and the history of the book. Examining gendered readerships and the use of erotic works, reading practises and manuscript culture, textual forms and transmission, literary taste and the canonisation of Shakespeare, this book argues that historicist criticism can no longer ignore histories of reading.

Book Synopsis Teaching Early Modern English Literature from the Archives by : Heidi Brayman Hackel
Download or read book Teaching Early Modern English Literature from the Archives written by Heidi Brayman Hackel and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of digital editions of early modern works brings a wealth of exciting archival and primary source materials into the classroom. But electronic archives can be overwhelming and hard to use, for teachers and students alike, and digitization can distort or omit information about texts. Teaching Early Modern English Literature from the Archives places traditional and electronic archives in conversation, outlines practical methods for incorporating them into the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and addresses the theoretical issues involved in studying them. The volume discusses a range of physical and virtual archives from 1473 to 1700 that are useful in the teaching of early modern literature--both major sources and rich collections that are less known (including affordable or free options for those with limited institutional resources). Although the volume focuses on English literature and culture, essays discuss a wide range of comparative approaches involving Latin, French, Spanish, German, and early American texts and explain how to incorporate visual materials, ballads, domestic treatises, atlases, music, and historical documents into the teaching of literature.
