Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Worthies of England, Vol. 3 of 3 Oxfordshire hath Berkshire (divided first by the Isis, then by the Thames) on the south; Gloucestershire on the west; Buckinghamshire on the east; Warwick and Northampton-shires on the north. It aboundeth with all things necessary for man's life; and I understand that hunters and falconers are no where better pleased. Nor needeth there more pregnant proof of plenty in this place than that lately Oxford was for some years together a courts a garrison and an university; during which time it was well furnished with provisions on reasonable rates. Natural Commodities. Fallow Deer. And why of these in Oxfordshire? why not rather in Northamptonshire where there be the most or in Yorkshire, where there be the greatest, parks in England? It is because John Rous of Warwick telleth me, that at Woodstock in this county was the most ancient park in the whole land, encompassed with a stone wall by king Henry the first. Let us premise a line or two concerning Parks; the case, before we come to what is contained therein. 1. The word parcus appears in Varro (derived, no doubt, a parcendo, to spare or save) for a place wherein such cattle are preserved. 2. There is mention once or twice in Domesday-book of parous silvestris bestiarum, which proveth parks in England before the Conquest. 3. Probably such ancient parks (to keep J. Rous in credit and countenance) were only paled, and Woodstock the first that was walled about. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. During his retire ment at this rectory, he began to complete several works he had planned at Cambridge; but, growing weary of a country parish, and uneasy, at the unsettled state of public affairs, he removed to London; and distinguished himself so much in the pulpits there, that he was invited by the master and brother hood of the Savoy to be their lecturer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funeral monuments are fascinating and diverse cultural relics that continue to captivate visitors to English churches, yet we still know relatively little about the messages they attempt to convey across the centuries. This book is a study of the material culture of memory in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England. By interpreting the images and inscriptions on monuments to the dead, it explores how early modern people wanted to be remembered - their social vision, cultural ideals, religious beliefs and political values. Arguing that early modern English monuments were not simply formulaic statements about death and memory, Dr Sherlock instead reveals them to be deliberately crafted messages to future generations. Through careful reading of monuments he shows that much can be learned about how men and women conceived of the world around them and shifting concepts of gender, social order and the place of humans within the universe. In post-Reformation England, the dead became superior to the living, as monuments trumpeted their fame and their confidence in the resurrection. This study aims to stimulate historians to attempt to reconstruct and engage with the world view of past generations through the unique and under-utilised medium of funeral monuments. In so doing it is hoped that more light may be shed on how memory was created, controlled and contested in pre-modern society, and encourage the on-going debate about the ways in which understandings of the past shape the present and future.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chautauqua Library of English History and Literature, Vol. 3: The Wars of the Roses For the period of English history treated in this volume we are fortunate in possessing an unrivaled interpreter in our great dramatic poet, Shakespeare. A regular sequence of historical plays exhibit to us not only the general character of each successive reign, but nearly the whole chain of leading events, from the days of Richard II. to the death of Richard III. at Bosworth. Following the guidance of such a master mind, we realize for ourselves the men and actions of the period in a way we cannot do in any other epoch. And this is the more important, as the age itself, especially toward the close, is one of the most obscure in English history. During the period of the Wars of the Roses, we have, comparatively speaking, very few contemporary narratives of what took place, and any thing like a general history of the times was not written till a much later date. But the doings of that stormy age - the sad calamities endured by kings - the sudden changes of fortune in great men - the glitter of chivalry and the horrors of civil war - all left a deep impression upon the mind of the nation, which was kept alive by vivid traditions of the past at the time that our great dramatist wrote. Hence, notwithstanding the scantiness of records and the meagerness of ancient chronicles, we have singularly little difficulty in understanding the spirit and character of the times. - Gairdner. Mrs. Ford, though she cried too, could not but admire and wonder at these black dresses covered with crape, which she felt it would have been a pleasure to old Mr. Trevor to see, so deep were they, and showing so much respect. It was almost like widows' mourning, she declared, deeper far than that which ordinary mourners wore for a parent: but then, when you considered what Lucy had lost - and gained But little Jock got no satisfaction out of his hat-band; he found no comfort in anything but Lucy's hand, which he clung to as his only. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richer Than Wealth, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel Captain Maynard, painfully excited, had his opera-glass to his eyes, and was scan ning every feature of his pale, beautiful beloved, who was looking then into the sheet of music she held. When he saw she wore nothing round her throat, a half exclamation broke from him, and the stout woman, seeing his pallor and wild dark eyes, began to think it would be advisable to move her seat. Just then, however, at a signal from the conductor, Dorcas rose she put her handkerchief to her lips a moment, and then, looking at Mr. Hartley began. She was evidently very nervous, for the voice, so full of exquisite cadence, was uncertain and trembled, and there appeared just then to be a want of power in her chest to send the notes forth. It was a moment of such tension as comes happily but seldom in a lifetime. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blue Belles of England, Vol. 2 of 3 The coachman attempted no remonstrance. He had lived two years with her ladyship, during which period he had learned to know that the ardours of bluism are not to be subjected to any of the vulgar laws which influence the doings of ordinary people. He therefore drew up to the side of the street, and making a Signal to the footman to de scend, desired him to go into the porter house before which he had stationed him self, and inquire if they knew a family of the name of Hartley. N was the an swer given to the footman, and N was the answer passed on to the coachman. John tapped at the front window of the chariot, which was immediately let down. Does your ladyship happen to know in what street, or in what square, or may be, near what square, the lady lives? Said he, dipping his head, and pinching his hat. The man who is ever looking after money is fitting company only for the devils, of whom, indeed, he is already one. But Charley cannot any longer be called one of the cottage circle. It was now the end of October, and Since the day of his arrest he had not yet been there.
