Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the State of Indiana, Vol. 2 It is not the purpose of this chapter to give a detailed account of the causes which led to the war with Mexico, or even of the events of that war, only so far as they have to do with the history of Indiana. Texas had been a part of the Mexican Republic, but had declared its independence, and after a sanguinary war had achieved it. Upon the conclusion of the war the project of a union with the United States was broached in both countries. In fact, the matter had been pretty generally discussed before the war for independence closed, and it was freely charged that that war had been brought about by designing politicians in this country, with a view to the ultimate annexation of Texas. Be that as it may, the proposed admission of Texas as a State of the Union found many opponents, especially in the Northern States, who contended that it was advocated solely for the purpose of extending the area of slave territory. By the terms of the proposed admission, Texas could, in the future, be divided into as many as five States, thus giving to the South ten additional members of the United States Senate, and an additional representation in the House of Representatives; also a material addition to its strength in the electoral college. The feeling against slavery had been growing in the Northern States for several years, and this proposed extension of slave territory aroused the most bitter antagonism, and added fuel to the flame of opposition to the peculiar institution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indiana and Indianans, Vol. 2: A History of Aboriginal and Territorial Indiana and the Century of Statehood This last editorial called forth a strong protest from Abel D. Streight, which is notable as the first clear pronouncement in favor of forcible resistance to secession in a State, the vast majority of whose people were devoted to the Union. Streight's letter, published in the Journal of November 21, closed with these words: f'is war so dreadful or peace so desirable that we should consent to the'overthrow of the Constitution prepared by the fathers of our country as a sacred guar antee for our liberties and the basis of our unexampled prosperity? May it never be said that we are the degenerate sons of a brave and noble ancestry, who are too timorous to preserve the liberties so gal lantly won by the immortal heroes of the Revolution. Streight was a notable character. His father, a native of Vermont, moved to Steuben County, New York, and settled on a farm, where Abel D. Was born June 17, 1828. At the age of seventeen, having passed his boyhood on the farm, with ordinary common sch'ool advantages, he purchased his time of his father, until twenty-one, at sixty dollars a year, and started out for himself.' He learned the carpenter's trade, and at nineteen took a contract for a large mill, which he successfully com pleted. He purchased a saw-mill, and engaged in the lumber business at Wheeler, N. Y., until 1858, when he removed to Cincinnati. The following year he removed to Indianapolis, and engaged in publishing. Not satisfied with newspaper articles, he published a pamphlet on the duty of the hour, urging the preservation of the Union at all hazards, and reproducing articles from The Federalist, President Jackson's seces sion message, and other standard expressions of American statesmen on the same patriotic lines. In September, 1861, he joined the army, as Colonel of the fifty-first Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and went to the front, seeing actual service first at the siege of Corinth. In April, 1863, Streight was sent by Rosecrans, with a force of men, to cut the railroads in western Georgia, over which supplies were sent to Bragg's army. The force divided, and Streight, with about two-thirds of it, was surrounded on May 3 by a large force under General Forrest. Johnson. For twenty years the late John C. Johnson was a resident of Muncie, to the progress of which he was a large contributor. He came to the city in 1884 and became an interested partner in the lumber and saw-milling business of the firm of A. L. Johnson Company, at the same time manifesting a keen interest in public affairs. In reviewing the career of this successful business man and prominent citizen, as he was, we note that he was a native of the state of New York, born on the lt of May, 1843, in Albany county, his parents being Henry I. And Eliza (ferguson) Johnson, who were also natives of the Empire State. The father, who was an agriculturist, resided in New York until 1864, when he moved to Ashtabula, Ohio, and in 1881 came with his family to Muncie, Indiana. When the subject of this review was seven years of age his parents removed from Albany county, New York, to Herkimer county, that state, where he received a fair common - school education. At the age of seventeen years he enlisted in the Union Army, Company K, Forty-fourth New York, known as the Ellsworth Avengers, and served one year. On account of a wound received at the battle of Hanover Court House Mr. Johnson was sent first to Albany, New York, and from there to Lexington Avenue Hospital, in New York city, from which he was discharged after recovery. Entering the quartermaster's department at City Point, Virginia, under Captain C. E. Jones, he remained in that capacity until the close of the war. He had laid aside school books to render service in defense of the Union, and now having returned from the battle front with an honorable discharge he again entered the school room, for two years attending an academy for boys at Albany, New York, and then took a course at Bryant Stratton's Commercial College. For some fifteen years thereafter he was in the employ of H. W. Sage Company and others of Albany, his occupation being that of a clerk and bookkeeper. During that time he Obtained a thorough knowledge of the lumber business in all its departments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Past and Present of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, Vol. 2: Illustrated Mr. Haywood started in life as a teacher, which profession he followed most of the time for eight years, having begun when nineteen years old, but the law had its attractions for him, and in 1877 he began studying for a career as an attorney with Bartholomew Smith at Valparaiso. He taught school in the meantime until 1880, in which year he was admitted to the bar in Lafayette. After this he continued the study of law for two years in the office of G. O. A. O. Behm. In the spring of 1882 he formed a partner ship with W. F. Bechtel, the firm being known as Bechtel Haywood, which continued until the fall of 1884, after which he continued alone in the practice of the law until March 1, 1896, when he formed a partnership with Charles A. Burnett, under the firm name of Haywood Burnett, which partnership has continued until the present time. His practice has steadily grown from the first, and he is now rated as one of the leading attorneys in a community long noted for the high order of its legal talent, the present firm of which Mr. Haywood is a member being an especially strong one, and having a clientele second to none in the county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Old Vincennes and Knox County, Indiana, Vol. 2 One of the-surprises of modern times, unknown before the advent of the telegraph and the railroad but standing out more clearly in very recent years, is the rapid growth of important business enterprises. Not like Jonah's gourd, which we are told sprang up in a night and disappeared the next day, are many of these magnificent creations of the marvelous brain of man. Some of them assumed tangible shape quickly, but fostered and encouraged by genius, they have grown from a slender sapling to a great tree which, like the banyan, gives shelter to thousands. In the list of great modern enterprises should be named the Vincennes Bridge Company. Conceived only ten years ago and starting only as a little factory with a small financial foundation but great expectations, the Vincennes Bridge Company has gained a name which is known all over the world and is today one of the largest manufactories of highway bridges in existence. Its output of twelve hundred bridges yearly fails to meet the constantly increasing demand and extensive plans are made for large additions. The plant is thoroughly modern and is supplied with all the ma chinery and devices for fabricating the iron and steel into shape and redue ing the material to sizes convenient for transportation and handling; at the place of consignment. This plant is one of the most important works. At Vincennes and as its output has already reached a million dollars a year, . The prospect of largely increased capacity is regarded with unmixed grati fication by everybody interested in the welfare and growth of the city.
