Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the South-Eastern Railway That a comparatively small railway like the south-e astern should possess a history which contains many incidents of a very varied character, as it' does, is most remarkable. The line has been Opened not much more than fifty years, yet during the whole of that period it has alway been strongly before the public in some way or another. Its lately-resigned chairman (sir Edward Watkin), so well known as the Railway King, is generally known as a good fighter, but the Company has always, more or less, been at variance with its neighbours. Then the public has much to do with the line. It serves a populous suburban district in the South of London, and touches most of the holiday resorts patronised by Londoners. To the uninitiated the hidden springs that govern things are hard to under stand the public only see the results and know little of the inner working - the why and wherefore. These arise from many causes, small in themselves but great for weal or woe in their consequences. So many years ago a petty private quarrel between a railway magnate and the proprietor of a daily journal was the cause of much unjust criticism and unfounded complaints being published about the s.e.r. Has it ever struck the average reader of the daily papers that most complaints, no matter on what subject, appear anonymously? Signed, say, Another Victim, or Business Lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Illustrated Guide to the South-Eastern Railway and All Its Branches The south-eastern Railway is one of the most important lines in England, opening, in the first place, a direct and rapid communi cation with the Continent by the way of Folkestone and Dover, and visiting on its road many important stations connected with popu lous towns and thriving rural districts; affording, also, a rapid means of transit to several favourite watering-places which before its establishment were Virtually at a day's distance from London instead of three or four hours; and, lastly, furnishing, with its branches, ready means of access to places in various parts of the southern counties not before traversed by railways, and thus enabling persons to reach other lines without the necessity of going to London to avail themselves of the metropolitan trains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South-Eastern Railway Manual: Describing the Cities, Towns, and Villages, the Principal Seats, the Cathedrals, Fortified Places, and Ruins, the Scenery in the Most Picturesque Districts, and the Bathing and Watering Places, on or Near the Line Nowhere is the tide in the affairs of men more remarkably illustrated than here and nowhere does it ebb and ow with greater regularity. No sooner has the receding tide left the strand, than a solitary pedestrian, whose huge frame and gaitered calves proclaim a Sussex farmer or a Kentisll yeoman, is seen, like the first ripple of advancing wave, rounding the corner, and anxiously glancing at the clock, compares the time with that of his village chronometer, which he afi'ectionatel y, or perhaps technically, calls his my. The difference of seventeen minutes between the two, while enabling him to wipe his brow, and more leisurely to gain the station, wrests from his relieved mind sundry ejaculations of Cockney boobies, queer notions to set their clock by high water at London bridge. But faster and faster gathers the crowd, hundreds of pedestrians, and from every description of vehicle descending parties jostling together, eagerly press forward to secure their tickets, and to select their respective carriages. While without the station walls all was a mixture of chaos and Babylon - the natural consequence of universal individual independence; within, all is symmetry and regularity. To each is his allotted place, to each his allotted time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
