Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II of VI Best edition of the standard work (with analytical index in Vol. VI) Contemporary review from the Athenaeum: "It only be remarked that Colonel Malleson wields his pen with so much skill that while giving a realistic account of all important operations, passing over no really noteworthy act of talent or heroism, and acutely criticising everything which demands criticism, he abstains from overlaying his narrative with details which would have increased the bulk of his book beyond all reason. Another characteristic of Colonel Malleson is that he never hesitates to condemn conduct of which he disapproves or to draw attention to errors which he conceives were committed, whatever the rank or position of those who are the objects of his criticism. The result is that many of the actors in the drama will find their laurels somewhat injured, while others, who from official prejudice have not yet received full credit for their exploits, obtain from the author due praise for their services. The rewards given for the Mutiny were liberal, but it is distressing to find that some of them were undeserved, while on the other hand, many able and gallant men have received no recognition at all ... There are many highly-placed officials whose fame is sadly tarnished by the frank, truthful criticisms of the fearless, uncompromising author of the book before us."

Book excerpt: This volume continues the theme of the development of the Royal Artillery during the run-up to the Great War, fifteen years compared with the forty of VoL I, fifteen years devoted to definite preparation in which the developments in Organization, Armament and Training discussed in Vol I were co-ordinated to a common aim. On the other hand the breach between branches was widened by the separation between mounted and dismounted, and the general trend towards spacialization. So, in this volume a different method has been adopted in which the developments of each branch are recorded separately in three parts - The Field Army Artillery, The Siege Artillery and the Coast Artillery. Part V has a couple of chapters on the Auxiliary Artillery which included the Militia, Volunteers, the Special Reserve and the Territorial Force. The final Part VI deals with Regimental Institutions such as the Remount Department, the Riding Establishment, the RA Institution, the Artillery College, Gunnery courses, the RMA, the RA Mess and the Bands. One of the appendices provides a chart showing the distribution of units as on 1 Aug 1914. There is a very comprehensive index

Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles of the Indian Mutiny] By 1857, British power in India had been largely undisputed for almost fifty years, however, the armies of the East India Company were largely recruited from the native people of India. This inherent weakness would be exposed during the events of the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1858, as the Sepoy soldiers turned against their erstwhile British employers. The events that led up to the Revolt were many and varied, including British highhandedness, ignorance of local customs and religious values, and incendiary propaganda. It is generally argued that the spark that lit the flame was the rumour that the newly issued rifle cartridges would be greased either with tallow, derived from beef and thereby offensive to Hindus, or lard, derived from pork and thereby offensive to Muslims. The enraged soldiers mutinied across a number of Indian States, taking Delhi, besieging Lucknow, and revolting in Oudh. The rebellion was eventually quelled in 1858 however, the effects of the Mutiny were far ranging and important. The East Indian Company was dissolved and the British government set about reorganising all facets of its power in India from the political to the administration and, most pointedly, the military. Although India would not gain its Independence until 150 years later, the events of the Indian Mutiny stayed in the folk consciousness of the country, a number of the leaders were lionized in certain circles, and a measure of nascent nationhood was born. Of the many books written on the event, few are as well respected, accurate, frequently read or cited as the six volume history produced by two ex-British Army officers, Sir John Kaye and Colonel George Malleson, who had both erved extensively in India. This fifth volume deals with the effects of the revolt outside of the North-Western Provinces and discusses the causes of the revolt.
