Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the English Bible: Extending From the Earliest Saxon Translations to the Present Anglo-American Revision In order to bring down the history of English translations to the present time, an extended account will be found in the following pages, of various public and private attempts to wards translations and revisions since that of King James' Bible, 1611. The great majority of these efforts were by private individuals and consequently of no special impor tance. There were other attempts made by public authority, and hence of greater significance. By far the most important of these, is the anglo-american revision undertaken by the authority of the Convocation of Canterbury and with the ex press design of superseding King James' version. Whether it will accomplish this design must remain, for the present at least, an open question. It must he confessed, however, that in the history of English translations no version ever attracted so wide-spread expectation. And then it carries with it the recommendation of the most profound English and American scholarship - a scholarship in every way com petent to deal with original authorities and to make the best use of all critical helps. While this is true of the New Testament revisers whose labors have just closed, it is equally true of the Old Testament revisers whose labors will not be completed for some three years to come. In fact, many Americans thought of the KJV as the foundational text of the Republic, rather than a cultural inheritance from Anglican Britain. In the nineteenth century, however, as new editions of the Greek New Testament appeared, scholars increasingly recognized significant errors and inconsistencies in the KJV. This soon 1ed to the Bible revision movement, whose goal was the uniting of all English-speaking Protestants behind one new, improved version of the Bible. Ironically, as Peter Thuesen shows in this fascinating history, the revision movement in fact resulted in a vast proliferation of English scripture editions and an enduring polarization of American Christians over versions of Holy Writ. The recurrent controversies over Bible translations, he argues, tell us less about the linguistic issues dividing conservatives and liberals than about the theological assumptions they have long held in common.

It focusses on the connection between inspiration and formal perfection as it appears in George Wither's "A Preparation to the Psalter", Philip Sidney's "The Defence of Poesy", "The Sidney Psalter" and "The Bay Psalm Book". Taking into account theological, philosophical, and literary contexts of the time, it reveals the struggle to find a suitable language in praise of God as a main concern of Early Modern religious writers, and presents concepts which are highly relevant for the religious poetry of the time.
