Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Council of Constance: And the War in Bohemia; Published Under the Direction of the Committee of General Literature and Education, Appointed by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge The volume here offered to public notice is not controversial, but purely, and, as far as human nature - the Author's nature at least - allows, impartially historical. Its influence, if it obtain any, will tend to the extinction of controversy, by promoting the legitimate object of all disputes, viz. the acknowledgment of truth, and the extension of charity. Such should surely be the effect of exhibiting in their just light the evils, both of despotic bigotry, and of that vindictive licence which is at once its natural offspring and its opposite. Great events are of slow production, as well as, consequently, of rare occurrence. That great work of Providence, the Reformation, was not effected at once, nor brought forth without preparative and painful throes. Luther's and Cranmer's Reformation, though, when viewed as one, embracing all we popularly mean by the word, was neither the only nor the first Reformation: it indeed towers so high, and "looms" so broadly on the eye of imagination, that we are apt to overlook both the remoter progressive heights which lead up to it, and the basis of gradual inquiry and heroic self-sacrifice for the truth on which it rests. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Councils of the Church, Vol. 5 of 5: From the Original Documents Some critics of previous parts of the history have ex pressed surprise that the Editor has not more frequently annotated the statements of the Author. Such a temptation has frequently occurred; but it was thought better, where no question of fact was involved, to leave the Author to speak for himself, his point of view being quite well understood. More over, we believe that history is the best controversialist. When we compare the letter of S. Leo to the fourth (ecumenical Council with that of Pope Agatho to the sixth, it becomes quite clear that an explanation of the difference must be attempted from two Opposite points of view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Councils, Ancient and Modern: From the Apostolical Council of Jerusalem, to the Oecumenical Council of Nicaea, and to the Last Papal Council in the Vatican After the interval of more than goo years, the world hears again of an (ecumenical Council. To readers of ecclesiastical history the word is familiar, although it requires no low degree of ecclesiastical science to estimate with accuracy the relative importance of councils, and their value as registers of the state of society, and of the Church, at the times when they occur. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Councils and Their Decrees The title of this book involves no discussion as to the rightful application of the terms General or (ecumenical to any of the Councils of the Christian Church. But, for that reason, it may seem the more desirable to take note of the fact that three great branches of the Church, namely, the Greek, the Roman, and the Anglican, differ widely from one another in their recognition of the authority actually attaching to the decisions of such assemblies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Papacy, Vol. 1: During the Period of the Reformation The result of many experiments and much discussion was the establishment of a General Council as the ultimate court of appeal. Unsuccessful through its crudity at Pisa, the con ciliar system asserted itself at Constance, and was strong enough to answer its immediate purpose, and end the Schism. But when it had done this, it could do nothing more. The abolition of ecclesiastical grievances was beyond its power. Men could not discover the interests of Christendom, because they were overlaid by conflicting interests of classes and nations. The Council, which expressed in the fullest manner the unity of Christendom, showed that that unity was illusory. The con ciliar principle was set up as a permanent factor in the organi sation of the Church, and men hoped that it might be more fortunate in the future. The condition of Europe and the fortunes of the Papacy offered a brilliant opportunity to the Council of Basel. In some things it succeeded; but it was helpless to reorganise the Church. It attacked, instead of reforming, the Papacy: it proposed to hand over the Church to a self-constituted parlia' ment. The Council of Constance failed because it represented Christendom too faithfully, even to its national dissensions. The Council of Basel failed because, in its endeavour to avoid that danger, it represented nothing save the pretensions of a self-elected, self-seeking body of ecclesiastics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Council of Constance to the Death of John Hus: Being the Ford Lectures Delivered in the University of Oxford in Lent Term, 1900 Rector of Beeford in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Few of these disquisitions, however, contain much local colour, save perhaps the letters of Stephen Dolein against the Hussites, while complimentary and barren harangues abound, as the various envoys arrived and poured forth their floods of adulation upon Sigismund with a lively sense of favours to come.
