Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 1: From the Reformation to the Present Time The conduct of the most conspicuous of the ministers who had been bred at the feet of these men, or had adopted their views, will admit of little palliation; for the passions of hatred, variance, emulation, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envy ings, by which they were actuated, were works of the flesh which inferred the pains of disinheritance from the kingdom of heaven, but which were then extremely common. Their vio lence is admitted by Dr. Robertson, himself a presbyterian minister, who says, the pulpit was disgraced by being used as a vehicle to recite the sovereign, and to stir up contention among the people. The circumstance which will make the following history more interesting to i English readers is, that the destruction of the church of England, and the per scontion of her clergy in the seventeenth century, were the effects of the Scottish Solemn League and Covenant. The same agency was at work, and the same objects contemplated, by the jesuits, when they instigated the covenanters to ex tirpate the reformed Catholic church in all the three kingdoms, and their maxim that the end justifies the means was then fully verified. Book excerpt: Philip Schaff's monumental work 'The Creeds of Christendom' is a comprehensive exploration of the historical development and theological significance of the creeds and confessions of the Christian faith. Divided into three volumes, Schaff meticulously examines the early creeds of the Church, the various confessions of the Protestant Reformation, and the modern statements of faith from different Christian traditions. Written in a clear and scholarly style, this work provides readers with a deep understanding of the foundational beliefs that have shaped Christian theology throughout history. Schaff's insightful analysis and detailed explanations make this book an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of Christian doctrine. Philip Schaff, a renowned church historian and theologian, brings his expertise to bear in 'The Creeds of Christendom'. With a deep knowledge of the historical and theological context in which these creeds were formulated, Schaff presents a nuanced and thorough examination of their significance. His passion for the subject matter is evident in the meticulous research and thoughtful insights that he brings to this monumental work. I highly recommend 'The Creeds of Christendom' to scholars, students, and anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of the foundational beliefs of the Christian faith.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of Scotland, From the Reformation to the Present Time, Vol. 4 Out OF thirteen prelates that were ejected from their sees in 1688, only five now remained alive, viz. Paterson, arch bishop of Glasgow; Rose, bishop of Edinburgh; Halibur ton, of Aberdeen Hay, of Moray 5 and douglas, ofdunb1ane. There does not appear to have been any synod or other meet ing of these venerable prelates; but Mr. Skinner says, they came to an unanimous resolution of continuing the apostolic succession. This resolution, however, was not put in execu tion till January next year. By the merciful providence of God, the sting had been taken out of the presbyterian excom munications, and therefore these persecuted prelates were per mitted to remain in the kingdom, which the fear of death compelled their excommunicated predecessors of the Spottis wood line to quit; and so not only to keep fast that good thing which was committed unto them by the H oiy Ghost, but to commit the same to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
