Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 33rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment was formed in the spring of 1862 just after the Battle of Shiloh. That battle had shown both sides that the struggle would not be a short one and many more men would be needed to decide the victor in the epic confrontation known as the American Civil War. When the call went out for more men one place in Mississippi that responded was the Laurel Hill community in the southwest corner of Neshoba County. Men from Leake County and Scott County also responded to that call to Laurel Hill and a company was formed at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. They called their company the Cumberland Guards. The Cumberland Guards then moved to Grenada to the assembly camp and the company became Company A of the newly designated 33rd Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers. The 33rd served in the Western Theater mostly in the Army of Tennessee. It did not play any central or "heroic" role in any one battle like the 11th Mississippi did in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg or like the "Bloody Sixth" Mississippi did at Shiloh. It did not produce any men who went on to General rank during the war or on to illustrious political careers after the war. Some of the survivors did go on to successful careers in the professions of law, medicine, and education after the war but most returned to the South and took up their work as farmers and businessmen. Many moved on to other states out West since the war had devastated Mississippi. They were just a small part of the larger enterprise known as the Confederate States of America Army.

Book excerpt: This is an accounting of the experiences of the soldiers of Hardcastle's 3rd Battalion Mississippi Infantry from enlistment to the end of the war. It includes their mid-war incarnation as the 45th Mississippi Regiment and the role they played in Cleburne's fabled division during almost every major engagement of the Army of Tennessee. Told as much as possible from the point of view of the soldier, the book shows what motivated the original volunteers to join and continue fighting to the end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a daily record of every soldier of the 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment from its organization in Pensacola in 1862 until its surrender in North Carolina in 1865. The regiment was formed by men from the following Mississippi counties: Oktibbeha, Choctaw, Winston, Jones, Pontotoc, Tallahatchie, Leake, Covington, Perry, Jasper, Scott, Monroe, and Jackson. Extensive research of official records of each soldier, casualty reports, pension applications, cemeteries, hospital registers, and letters can hopefully give a more comprehensive account of what happened to every soldier during the war. The regiment was in the center of the fighting in the Battles of Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Atlanta, Ezra Church, Jonesboro, Franklin and Nashville. They served in the brigades of two excellent leaders, General Edward Walthall and General William Brantley. One hundred and fifty-three were captured and imprisoned during the war. Special attention is given to hardships of prisoners of war, escapes, those who volunteered to fight Indians with the Union army, and the few that fought with the Union navy. A total of about 500 perished in the war, somewhere around one hundred and thirty-five were killed in action with the rest dying from disease and accidents. Approximately 400 were wounded. Twenty-three amputations were counted but lack of casualty records suggest there were higher numbers. Many lost several sons in the war with one couple losing five. Several men died leaving behind a wife and as many as six children. Most of the survivors returned to Mississippi but many migrated to other states. The greatest number moved to Texas with others finding their way to Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Others relocated as far as Colorado, Montana, and California. Most returning soldiers were farmers, but others became doctors, merchants, educators, preachers, and state legislators. One became a Lieutenant Governor and another the Danish Consulate to the city of San Francisco. Listed are many ancestors of the 27th Mississippi who served proudly in the United States military in the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

They fought in the Seven Days' Battles and at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, in the Wilderness campaign, and at Spotsylvania. At the surrender they were beside General Robert E. Lee in Appomattox. From the beginning of the war to its very end the men of the Sixteenth Mississippi endured. In this collection of their letters and their memories, both historians and Civil War buffs will find the fascinating words of these common soldiers in one of the most notable units in the Army of Northern Virginia. Gathered and available here for the first time, the writings in this anthology include diary entries, letters, and reminiscences from average Mississippi men who fought in the war's most extraordinary battles. Chronologically arranged, the documents depict the pace and progress of the war. Emerging from their words are flesh-and-blood soldiers who share their courage and spirit, their love of home and family, and their loneliness, fears, and campaign trials. From the same camp come letters that say, Our troops are crazy to meet the enemy and, It is not much fun hearing the balls and shells a-coming. Soldiers write endearingly to wives, earnestly to fathers, longingly to mothers, and wistfully to loved ones. With wit and dispatch they report on crops and land, Virginia hospitality, camp rumors and chicanery, and encounters, both humorous and hostile, with the Yankee enemy. Many letters convey a yearning for home and loved ones, closing with such phrases as Write just as soon as you get this. Though the trials of war seemed beyond the limits of human endurance, letter writing created a lifeline to home and helped men persevere. So eager was Jesse Ruebel Kirkland to keep in touch with his beloved Lucinda that he penned, I am on my horse writing on the top of my hat just having met the mail carrier. Robert G. Evans is a judge of the Thirteenth Circuit Court of the State of Mississippi. He lives in Raleigh, Miss.

Book excerpt: The 27th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Fort Heiman, Tennessee, on 28 January 1862, a number of companies having flocked to that point in the winter of 1861. Initially, many soldiers carried double-barreled shotguns and long Bowie knives, according to J.P. Cannon, Inside of Rebeldom. Two Companies of "detachments, absentees, convalescents and recruits" of the 27th joined the Mississippi Second Bttn. "beyond Farmington on the Pittsburg Road" after the Second Battallion's engagement at Shiloh. This unit was then designated as the 33rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment, then the 38th Mississippi Infantry Regiment and finally the 45th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. After the parole of the 27th Alabama Infantry from Camp Douglas, Illinois Prison Camp, the original members of the 27th rejoined their unit. Ordered to Fort Henry, the regiment shared in the defense of that place, but it retired before the surrender, forming part of the garrison of Fort Donelson. It took part in the conflict there and was there surrendered, 16 February 1862. Following exchange the 27th continued throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee participating in the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin and Nashville, and the Carolinas Campaign. The 27th formed part of the last Confederate wave at Franklin and Nashville. There were only a few who were present to move into the Carolinas, and the regiment was ultimately consolidated with the 35th, 49th, and 57th Alabama regiments. The remainder surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, 9 April 1865. Companies Of The Alabama 27th Infantry Regiment Company A - Franklin - J.B. Moore; till re-organized. Robert Watson; superceded.
