Book excerpt: In Fall, 1979, the author conducted a literature and records search on the cultural resources of the Portage, Wisconsin area. Despite the relative dearth of professional archaeological investigations in the area, the author complied a list of 131 prehistoric or historic American Indian sites, suggesting that the project area has some considerable archaeological potential. The author also complied a list of 137 sites or structions of historical and/or architectural interest. The survey determined that the historic resources indicate the importance of the area in the early history of Wisconsin from the days of the French explorers into the period of the early development of the state.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed during October, 1981, the historical and standing structure study of the flood control project in Portage, Wisconsin, surveyed structures and sites in the First Ward and below the 800 foot contour level between Cook and the Portage Canal on the northwest; the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad on the north; and MacFarland Road on the west. The level of investigation was a phase I or reconnaissance survey, intended to identify those structures and sites which might be potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. At this stage of the investigation, a fairly detailed literature search provided a local and regional context with which to judge site significance. Because the overall flood control project would affect sites favorably, i, e., protect them from flood damage it was concluded that any of the three project alternatives: the rebuilding of a levee, the construction of ring levees, or waterproofing individual structures; whichever gave more protection; should be selected. Each alternative could require some site mitigation. And, in fact, mitigation projects recommended in the report might, in the end, enhance the site involved.

Book excerpt: The History of the Central Brooks Range uses rare primary sources in order to provide a chronological examination and history of the Koyukuk region--including anthropological descriptions of the Native groups that make the Central Brooks Range and its surroundings their home. The history of early exploration, mining, and the Klondike all overflow into the story of the Koyukuk region and its rich cultural heritage, and William E. Brown provides a fascinating history of the extraordinary ways of survival employed by pioneers in this rugged northern land. Supplemented with detailed descriptions by Robert Marshall, The History of the Central Brooks Range is further enhanced by over 150 beautiful full-color illustrations--from early exploration to the creation of the Gates of the Arctic National Park--making this an essential volume for anyone interested in Alaska Native studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

An appendix also places the Sacagawea myth in its proper perspective. Gracefully written, the book bridges the gap between academic and general audiences.OCo"Choice""
