Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity The author has tried to keep in mind the fact that this work was ordered compiled primarily for the busy student Pi Phi, and she has left out much that would have given her real pleasure to have included in our Fraternity's life story. The study of the history of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity and intimate intercourse with our loyal alumna have been an inspiration and joy. Our Founders and our makers of early history, and all alumna have a right to exact of the Pi Phis of to-day that they preserve the traditions, uphold the standards, and ever live constant to their vows and the ideals and honor of Pi Beta Phi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Beta Theta Pi in the Forty-Eighth Year of the Fraternity The lists of the members admitted within the period above described were first made up from the roll that is kept in the general secretary's office and were then submitted to the chapters for revision. The addresses and the record of distinctions were furnished by the present corresponding secretaries. Although no distinctions. Are mentioned except such as are considered important at the several colleges, never theless, in accordance with the plan of the book, more distinctions are named than would have place in a catalogue of the whole fraternity. The notes prefixed to each chapter's roll were prepared by the editor and sent to the chapters for correction. In the paragraphs regarding fraternities in general, chapters are named in the order of original foundation. In the paragraphs regarding our own chapters, the lists of corresponding secretaries, of delegates to convention, and of other oflicers are, as a matter of course, limited to the period explained above. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record of Phi Kappa Psi: A Short History of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity Phi Kappa Psi has been most fortunate in retaining through their lives the enthusiastic devotion of her sons. But college life is short, and, while most of the old boys have kept in close touch with their own Chapters, the Fraternity has grown so steadily that few of them really know the full extent to which they have reason to be proud of their Fraternity. In this little book they will find that with which to justify the faith that is in them. Phi Kappa Psi has never posed as an exponent of the strenuous life, but the remarkable activities of her members is proof that they have kept constantly before them her ideals of well-balanced and all-round manhood. It is natural that a college fraternity should be judged by the lives and character of those who have been brought within the range of its influence, and it is with confidence that we may abide any judgment of our beloved Fraternity based upon its record as herein shown. No other college fraternity of our years has achieved anywhere near so much. Phi Psi's record is a glorious one and we who have helped to make it, have a right to demand of the present bearers of our standards that they preserve our traditions, maintain our principles and keep our faith, so that those who take up Phi Psi's standards after them may find in their record, as in ours, an inspiration for the future. Splendid as our record is here shown to be, it is too much to hope that many of our best achievements and most distinguished brothers have not been overlooked, for memory is treacherous and many things are remembered only when it is seen that they have been forgotten. The supplying of my omissions, the correction of my errors and the recording of Phi Psi's still greater achievements will offer to another hand a labor of love which this has been to mine. It also directs a seeker for information to an authoritative account of any event of the Fraternity's American history up to October, 1885. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phi Beta Kappa: Alpha of Wisconsin; Catalogue Phi Beta Kappa embodies the spirit which is historically that of the American college - that of liberal education as distinguished from professional or technical training. It is the purpose of a liberal education to establish close and sympathetic relations between the student and human thought in its wider expression. It appeals to the deep-rooted love of knowledge for its own sake, which is never absent from the human heart. It cultivates and strengthens this love and directs it toward worthy and permanent objects. It finds those objects in the multiform expressions of human personality in letters, arts, and science, and it attempts to connect the life of the student with these as never-failing sources of pleasure and enrichment. As an honor society Phi Beta Kappa recognizes those students who have most conspicuously profited by their undergraduate course and so give promise of having fairly begun a liberal education. It gives this recognition not only to show honor to personal distinction in college work, but also to emphasize the place which a liberal education holds both in the personal life and in that of the community which the graduate enters. For the continued success of a community - whether local or national - depends in no small degree on the presence in it, as a living force, of the spirit that underlies liberal education. The love of learning for its own sake, the disinterested pursuit of knowledge, an active, alert, intellectual interest in many fields of knowledge and in those fields most widely separated from commercial profit and most alien to vocation - these must be present as vigorous elements in the common life, if this life is not to degenerate into routine and so into ultimate failure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kappa's Record: A Short History of the Kappa Gamma Fraternity In this little book I have tried to glean from our history the material to justify our love for and pride in our fraternity and to confirm our faith for her future. I recognize the short comings and imperfections of this brief history of Kappa's splendid past and doubt not that many of her greatest victories and best achieve ments have been undiscovered or overlooked. This book, however, is but a sign post. I have attempted only to blaze the way along which it will be easy for others to follow. I know that in Kappa's ranks today there are many not only willing but eager to take up my labor of love where I have laid it down and fill in the missing links until Kappa's record is complete.
