The history of these men belongs to the United States their breasts were often the bulwarks, which, in the time of trial, saved us from the enslaving power of Great Britain, and we are endeavoring to preserve their names and their characters from oblivion, by erecting this Izzstorzcal monument to their memory. For the materials on which it is founded, the author is indebted to many kind friends, generally the relatives of the persons, but in an especial manner to W. R. Putnam, Esq., Hon. Judge Cutler, Col. Joseph Barker, and William Slocomb: for Corn. Whipple, to his grandson, Dr. Com stock, of Boston, John Howland, Esq., of Providence, Rhode Island, and P. G. Robbins, M. D., of Roxbury, Massachusetts. The names of many other prominent men are omitted from a lack of the facts on which to found a written biography and the larger number of those here given were obtained with much laborious search, amongst old letters, volumes of history, oral tradition, and numer ous letters of inquiry written to the relatives of the deceased, in various and distant parts of the country. To a per son passing over the State in a. Balloon, its surface presents an unvarying plain, while, to one sailing down the Ohio River, it appears mountainous. On this river are bluļ¬'s ranging from two hundred and fifty to six hundred feet in height. As one ascends the tributaries of the river, these bluffs diminish in height until they become gentle undu lutions, while toward the sources of the streams, in the central part of the State, the banks often become low and marshy. The principal rivers are the Ohio, Muskingum, Scioto and Miami, on the southern slope, emptying into the Ohio; on the northern, the Maumee, Sandusky, Huron and Cuyahoga, emptying into Lake Erie, and, all but the first named, entirely in Ohio. Making no pretensions to being an author, and this book being the result of an accident as it were, I ask from the reader a kindly consideration, and generous criticism. Some eight years ago, I, for my own amusement, furnished to the press a series of articles entitled "Our Early Settlers," in which I endeavored to truthfully detail some of the many reminiscences of pioneer life in this county. As these articles progressed, they had the merit of attracting some attention, especially from the old settlers, who took the matter in earnest, and steps were taken to form a Pioneer Association, which resulted in the formation of such a society. At the meetings and re-unions of this Association papers appropriate to the occasion were prepared and read by myself and others. I was then requested by many of the old frontiersmen, for whom I have the profoundest respect, as well as by many of the descendants of those who had "gone home" to prepare and have published a history of the county.
