Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North and South America, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Discovery to the Death of General Washington The settlement of these colonies being made at differ ent periods, with charters of incorporation extremely variant, and with governments as distinct as their geo graphical boundaries, rendered a history of the British empire in America very complex and difficult. From this heterogeneous mass, the writer has endeavored, with considerable labor, to educe a summary of those events that paved the way to the American Revolution; and this Synopsis will constitute an introduction to the future histories of the united states. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North and South America, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Discovery to the Death of General Washington To furnish the public with a cheap history of America, from its discovery, to its present state of civilization and importance, is an undertaking of such general utility, that the attempt, if it even fall short of complete execution, has a claim to a considerable share of indulgence. This is more especially the case, when the writer has to follow a historian of such great and just celebrity as Dr. Robertson, in at least one half of the work. To compose such a historical epitome as is desirable, from scattered materials, is a difficulty of such magnitude, as wholly to discourage the attempt; and to abridge the pages of so great an original, where there is nothing superfluous, nothing the reader would wish omitted, is a design, which to many will seem to border on temerity. But this abridgement has been preferred, as it is attended with the least chance of disappointment; and to borrow is not dishonorable, when the obligation is candidly acknowledged. In what relates to South America, Dr. Robertson's history has, therefore, been implicitly followed. His arrangement of the subject, his chronological order, and his very style have been adopted, as the best that can be chosen. To condense his details, to introduce only the most prominent and characteristic events, has been the principal effort, and invariable purpose of the epitomiser: endeavouring as he progressed, to preserve unbroken, the connexion and continuity of events; and in the whole, to present the reader with a brief, but interesting view, of one of the most important æras in the annals of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of North and South America, Vol. 2: Including the Celebrated Work by Dr. Robertson; Continued by a Complete History of the United States to the Present Time In the year 1676 he became one of the principal persons concerned in settling West New Jersey, in America; as we have already seen in the history of that colony. About this time also he wrote to some persons of great rank in Germany, as appears in his works; encouraging them to a perseverance in the paths of virtue and true religion; with the love of which he had understood their minds were happily and divinely inspired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Books Relating to the Discovery and Early History of North and South America, Vol. 1: Forming a Part of the Library of E. D. Church; 1482-1590 Thanks to the interest shown in this work by librarians of public libraries and private collectors, this Catalogue gives the location of other copies of the same books in about fifty libraries in this country; so that, in addition to being a catalogue of a single private collection, it is in a great measure a catalogue of the rarest works on American history to be found in the most important libraries in the United States and England, and to a lesser degree in some other countries. It is hoped that the errors which are inevitably bound to creep into a work involving such a multiplicity of details as are here given will be found neither numerous nor serious. Book excerpt: Publisher description: The Cambridge History of the Native Peoples of the Americas, Volume II: Mesoamerica (Part One), gives a comprehensive and authoritative overview of all the important native civilizations of the Mesoamerican area, beginning with archaeological discussions of paleoindian, archaic and preclassic societies and continuing to the present. Fully illustrated and engagingly written, the book is divided into sections that discuss the native cultures of Mesoamerica before and after their first contact with the Europeans. The various chapters balance theoretical points of view as they trace the cultural history and evolutionary development of such groups as the Olmec, the Maya, the Aztec, the Zapotec, and the Tarascan. The chapters covering the prehistory of Mesoamerica offer explanations for the rise and fall of the Classic Maya, the Olmec, and the Aztec, giving multiple interpretations of debated topics, such as the nature of Olmec culture. Through specific discussions of the native peoples of the different regions of Mexico, the chapters on the period since the arrival of the Europeans address the themes of contact, exchange, transfer, survivals, continuities, resistance, and the emergence of modern nationalism and the nation-state.

America’s expansion west was the driving force for issues of democracy, politics, race, freedom, and property. William Deverell and Anne F. Hyde provide a nuanced look at the past, balancing topics in society and politics and representing all kinds of westerners—black and white, native and immigrant, male and female, powerful and powerless—from more than twenty states across the West and the shifting frontier. The sources included reflect the important role of the West in national narratives of American history, beginning with the pre-Columbian era in Volume 1 and taking us to the twenty-first century in Volume 2. Together, these volumes cover first encounters, conquests and revolts, indigenous land removal, slavery and labor, race, ethnicity and gender, trade and diplomacy, industrialization, migration and immigration, and changing landscapes and environments. Key Features & Benefits: Expertly curated personal letters, government documents, editorials, photos, and never before published materials offer lively, vivid introductions to the tools of history. Annotations, captions, and brief essays provide accessible entry points to an extraordinarily wide range of themes—adding context and perspective from leaders in the field. Highlights connections between western and national histories to foster critical thinking about America’s diverse past and today’s challenging issues.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish and Portuguese South America, Vol. 1 of 2: During the Colonial Period The following account of the Colonies from which sprang the States of South America owes its origin to the want of such a work felt by myself some years ago. In 1866 I received the appointment of second Secretary to Her Majesty's Legation in the Argentine Republic and Paraguay. My previous experience having been in quite another part of the world, I had all to learn respecting the regions which I was about to visit The only book which had been recommended to me was Sir Woodbine Parish's work on Buenos Ayres. On reaching my destination, however, I found that this work was already out of date; I also found that there was a considerable amount of literature respecting South America. But this literature being partly in English, French, German, Dutch, Latin, or Italian, and partly in Spanish or Portuguese, was only accessible to persons possessing a reading knowledge of the above-named languages. Of two years in South America I passed one as Secretary at Buenos Ayres, and the other in a similar capacity at Rio de Janeiro. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of South America and Mexico, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising Their Discovery, Geography, Politics, Commerce and Revolutions; To Which Is Annexed, a Geographical and Historical View of Texas The English colonists in North America, consisting of the per scented athome, brought with them, to a considerable extent, the elements of freedom; and many Of the colonies Obtained charters securing the essential rights of self-government, and the enjoy ment 0 civil liberty; so that at a very early period, many scat tering rays of light were shed abroad in this western hemisphere, which served as the dawn of that brighter day of libert which we now behold in its meridian splendour. Although the nglish and Spanish systems Of colonial government in America were difl'er out, yet the views and policy of the two countries were essen tinlly the same, and tended to the same result. This policy was to keep the colonies, not only dependent, but tributary states; to monopolize their commerce, to cripple their manufactures, and in all respects to render them contributary to the wealth and aggran dizement of the colonizing country. In both divisions of the American continent this policy was more rigorously pursued as the colonies became more populous and wealthy, and as a jea lousy and apprehension of their independence increased. This illiberal policy necessaril led to a separation, and has resulted in the independence and om of the greater part of America. Book excerpt: A multicultural, multinational history of colonial America from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Internal Enemy and American Revolutions In the first volume in the Penguin History of the United States, edited by Eric Foner, Alan Taylor challenges the traditional story of colonial history by examining the many cultures that helped make America, from the native inhabitants from milennia past, through the decades of Western colonization and conquest, and across the entire continent, all the way to the Pacific coast. Transcending the usual Anglocentric version of our colonial past, he recovers the importance of Native American tribes, African slaves, and the rival empires of France, Spain, the Netherlands, and even Russia in the colonization of North America. Moving beyond the Atlantic seaboard to examine the entire continent, American Colonies reveals a pivotal period in the global interaction of peoples, cultures, plants, animals, and microbes. In a vivid narrative, Taylor draws upon cutting-edge scholarship to create a timely picture of the colonial world characterized by an interplay of freedom and slavery, opportunity and loss. "Formidable . . . provokes us to contemplate the ways in which residents of North America have dealt with diversity." -The New York Times Book Review
