Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North America It has been the constant aim of the author to preserve a careful impartiality in dealing with matters of difference of view, and to give no judgment for which he has not been able to offer a sanctioning fact for its source. The men of those times were, like the men of the present, serious and in the main sincere, and faced complex problems for whose solutions they could not furnish the needed wisdom. The new day which Jefferson introduced, and to which Madison fell heir, was indeed unique. While it grew out of the old and was organically part of the early life of the nation, it was very properly regarded by many as in a true sense another era. The story of the period might well be entitled: How democracy interpreted nationality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North America: Canada and British, North America The history of the United States is so interwoven with the history of Canada that every American must possess a working knowledge of the progress made by the Dominion if he would properly understand many of the important phases of the development of the United States. It is, how ever, from the Canadian and not the American standpoint that the account of the history of the British possessions in North America must be viewed if one is to have a correct estimate of the reciprocal influences exerted by the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada and a fair judgment of the policies and achievements of these two great governments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of North America In preparing the following history, the author has pursued that course which appeared to him best adapted to unite sound and thorough instruction with entertainment. Beginning with the discovery of the New World, and endeavouring to present the series of events in a clear and connected narrative, rejecting whatever he deemed irrelevant or unimportant, and dwelling chiefly on those striking features ofthe subject which give it vividness and character, he has brought it down to the present day. Although the considerable period embraced, the multitude of characters and events delineated, and the extent of the field in which they figure, have rendered the preservation of historical unity no easy task, he has laboured to give the work such a degree of compactness as woula enable the student to perceive the relation of all it parts, and to grasp the whole without any very difficult exercise of com prehension. When I have visited those few points of his toric significance still occupied by the army I have been very courteously shown all points of interest not of pres ent military value and have been allowed to photograph scenes which I desired to record which would have no worth to an enemy of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fight With France for North America The subject of this volume will, for the most part, I have reason to think, possess at least the merit of novelty for the general reader. The oblivion to which in this country the American War of Independence has been consigned is at least comprehensible. It had few dramatic features, and for us was not glorious, either in motive or conduct. But the earlier war with the French power in America was not only rich in picturesque detail and dramatic situation, but formed an important part of the most glorious and most epoch-making struggle in which Great Britain was ever engaged. Yet no English writer, using the term in its narrow sense, has seriously touched the subject since Warburton, early in the century, published his two admirable volumes on the Conquest of Canada. The well-known Canadian historian, the late Mr. Kingsford, has devoted a great part of volumes III. and IV. in his exhaustive history of the Dominion to the period in question. But it is idle to speak of what may be called in general terms books of reference (however interesting to the student), when the fascinating pages of the brilliant American, Francis Parkman, are only known to so comparatively small a circle of English readers. They are interrupted here and there by valleys, as at San Francisco, Portland, and the Klamath River. There is a markt climatic change from south to north, and the vegetation and topography vary correspondingly. In the drier southern portion the Coast Ranges present bold ridges and cliffs largely devoid of tree growth, while in the north the summits are rounded, and dense coniferous forests clothe the slopes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Settlement of the Jews: In North America More than twenty years have now elapsed since Judge Daly's work was first presented to the public, yet I feel that no excuse or apology is necessary for its re-publication to-day. Mr. Daly, then Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of this city, originally prepared the work in the form of an address delivered at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hebrew Benevolent Society of New York, on April 11, 1872, and then enlarged it for publication in The Jewish Times of that year. Subsequently, the accomplished and erudite author utilized a portion of the same data in an address delivered at the laying of the corner-stone of the new Hebrew Orphau Asylum, New York, May 17, 1883. It seems to me that the work has not lost the smallest element of interest since that time, but, on the contrary, appeals to-day to a much larger public than then, and, as, unfortunately, it did not appear in durable form, will seem to be new to the large majority of its readers of to-day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Tribes of North America From the date of its first appearance in 1891 the Powell map of Linguistic Families of American Indians North of Mexico has proved of the widest utility. It has been reissued several times and copied into numerous publications. There has, however, been almost equal need of a map giving the location of the tribes under the several families. To one familiar from his readings in early American history with the names and locations of our prominent eastern tribes, such as the Delaware, Iroquois, Cherokee, and Choctaw, the preparation of a tribal map would seem to be simple, and it would indeed be so if all Indians had been grouped into bodies as clearly marked as those mentioned. But even in the eastern United States the term tribe is quickly found to have no uniform application. The Creeks were a confederation of a few dominant tribes and a number of subordinate bodies, each formerly independent. The name Delaware is com mouly said to have covered three tribes or subtribes, but while two of these seem never to have been independent of each other, the third, the Munsee, is often treated as if it were entirely separate. The name Powhatan was applied to about 30 tribes or subtribes which had been brought together by conquest only a few years before Virginia was settled, and the term Chippewa, or Ojibwa, is used for a multitude of small bands with little claim to any sort of governmental unity. In the case of the Iroquois, on the other hand, the tribe was only a part of the governmental unit, the Iroquois Confederation, or Longhouse. The northern Plains tribes present a certain coherence but farther south and west our difficulties multiply. An early explorer in Texas states that in that region, by nation was to be understood only a single town or perhaps a few neighboring villages, and in fact the number of tribal names reported from this section seems almost endless. In the governmental sense, each Pueblo community was a tribe, and if we were to attempt a complete list we should have in the first place a large number of existing, or at least recently existing.
