Book Synopsis English Common Law in the Age of Mansfield by : James Oldham
Download or read book English Common Law in the Age of Mansfield written by James Oldham and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighteenth century, the English common law courts laid the foundation that continues to support present-day Anglo-American law. Lord Mansfield, Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, 1756-1788, was the dominant judicial force behind these developments. In this abridgment of his two-volume book, The Mansfield Manuscripts and the Growth of English Law in the Eighteenth Century, James Oldham presents the fundamentals of the English common law during this period, with a detailed description of the operational features of the common law courts. This work includes revised and updated versions of the historical and analytical essays that introduced the case transcriptions in the original volumes, with each chapter focusing on a different aspect of the law. While considerable scholarship has been devoted to the eighteenth-century English criminal trial, little attention has been given to the civil side. This book helps to fill that gap, providing an understanding of the principal body of substantive law with which America's founding fathers would have been familiar. It is an invaluable reference for practicing lawyers, scholars, and students of Anglo-American legal history.

Book Synopsis Senator Mansfield by : Don Oberdorfer
Download or read book Senator Mansfield written by Don Oberdorfer and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spellbinding biography of one of the most powerful and dignified men ever to come to DC—Senator Mike Mansfield. Mike Mansfield's career as the longest serving majority leader is finally given its due in this extraordinary biography. In many respects, Mansfield's dignity and decorum represent the high-water mark of the US Senate: he was respected as a leader who helped build consensus on tough issues and was renowned for his ability to work across the aisle and build strong coalitions. Amazingly, he would have breakfast every morning with a member of the opposing party. Mansfield was instrumental in pushing through some of the most influential legislation of the twentieth century. He was at the helm when the Senate passed landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the creation of Medicare, and the nuclear test ban treaty. Mansfield played a crucial role in shaping America's foreign policy, corresponding with JFK about his opposition to the growing presence of the US in Southeast Asia. As ambassador to Japan, his conversations with Cambodia and China paved the way for Nixon's historic trip to China in 1972.

This may have been the case, but it is now called the Church of Saint Peter only, Paul having been dropped at least a century ago. Probably he lagged behind somewhere. The church is supposed to have been first erected after the Norman Conquest. In 1304 it was almost entirely destroyed by fire, along with a number of houses in the immediate neighbourhood. It was shortly afterwards restored in a manner worthy of the period. William Rufus gave the Church of Mansfield, together with all its possessions, to Lincoln Cathedral, and the Bishop of Lincoln continued the patron of the living, receiving in lieu of the rectorial tithes a composition of eight shillings per acre from all the enclosed land in the parish, until the creation of the Diocese of Southwell. Thoroton states that "there were in the Church of Mansfield, before the time of Edward vi., ten chantries, whose land the Queen gave this year (1557) in fee to Christopher Grainger, clerk, the vicar, and William Wilde and John Chambers, the churchwardens of the parish church of Mansfield, to sustain one chaplain or priest. The vicarage of Mansfield, in the King's book, is 7 ys. 6d.; it is now valued at about. 280." During the reign of Edward, the ten chantries, which were for the saying of masses in for the souls of pious benefactors, reverted to the Crown; but in the reign of Philip and Mary they were handed over to the vicar and churchwardens to find a chaplain to celebrate divine service in the parish church for ever. Download or read book Lord Mansfield written by Norman S. Poser and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first modern biography of Lord Mansfield (1705-1793), Norman Poser details the turbulent political life of eighteenth-century Britain's most powerful judge, serving as chief justice for an unprecedented thirty-two years. His legal decisions launched England on the path to abolishing slavery and the slave trade, modernized commercial law in ways that helped establish Britain as the world's leading industrial and trading nation, and his vigorous opposition to the American colonists stoked Revolutionary fires. Although his father and brother were Jacobite rebels loyal to the deposed King James II, Mansfield was able to rise through English society to become a member of its ruling aristocracy and a confidential advisor to two kings. Poser sets Mansfield's rulings in historical context while delving into Mansfield's circle, which included poets (Alexander Pope described him as "his country's pride"), artists, actors, clergymen, noblemen and women, and politicians. Still celebrated for his application of common sense and moral values to the formal and complicated English common law system, Mansfield brought a practical and humanistic approach to the law. His decisions continue to influence the legal systems of Canada, Britain, and the United States to an extent unmatched by any judge of the past. An illuminating account of one of the greatest legal minds, Lord Mansfield presents a vibrant look at Britain's Age of Reason through one of its central figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mansfield Township was established as a constabulary in 1688 and became incorporated in 1798. It is one of the oldest townships in Burlington County. Made up of one town, Columbus, and the four villages of Hedding, Kinkora, Georgetown, and Mansfield Square, the township continues to retain the rural, agricultural landscape that its first settlers witnessed. Mansfield Township has had a number of notable residents, from Prince Lucian Murat, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, to Thomas Larzelere, an architect who was instrumental in designing plans for the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The vintage images in Mansfield Township, Burlington County bring to life the history of the township, from the days when weary travelers stopped for refreshment at the Columbus Inne to the modern, technologically driven community that the township is today.
