Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Language When asked by Mr. Dent to write an introduction to the principles of Comparative Philology for his series, I willingly consented, not only because I had the necessary materials ready to hand, but also because I felt there was still room for an addition to the already large literature of the subject; a subject which, however, admits of being approached from so many different points of view that any competent treatment of it is sure to have some special merits of its own. The first part of this book deals with the definition of the science of language, its scope (p. 20) and methods, and the life of language generally. In this part I have aimed at clearness of statement and adequate illustration, and have tried to avoid truisms and superfluous generalizations on the one hand, and over-abstraction and linguistic mysticism on the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of the History of Language AN attempt has been made to assist in making Professor Paul's great work better known to the English public, by translating it into English. In the original'by far the greater number of illustrative instances are drawn from the German language. In cases where English examples served precisely the same purpose as those drawn from German they have been frequently substituted. Additional examples, mainly drawn from English, have been inserted in brackets. It is hoped that it may be possible on a future occasion to add an Appendix fully illustrating the principles laid down by Paul from the English and other languages. Several references have been made to works which have been published since the appearance of Paul's work, such as the most recent productions of Darmesteter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the English Language As regards the subject of nomenclature, I have seen no reason to alter essentially that which was employed in the previous editions. On one point in particular, action has not been taken unadvisedly. I have exam ined with care everything accessible on the subject, and, I think, nearly everything that has been published, and the more I have read, the less I have been im pressed with the force of the arguments against the use of the term anglo-saxon. I have therefore te tained it in this work, as furnishing what is all-impor tant in nomenclature, a term which, once understood, can never be misunderstood. It is very noticeable that those who are most violently opposed to its use, not unfrequently resort to it when they wish to define with absolute precision what they mean when they apply the term Old English to a particular period in the history of the language. There are, indeed, advantages and disadvantages connected with any terminology that may be adopted. It is certainly an argument in favor of the designation as Old English of what is here called anglo-saxon, that it makes promi nent the continuity of our speech. It is an objection to it that, besides the inevitable ambiguity of the epi thet old, ' it suggests wrong ideas as to the nature of that continuity. Still it would be folly to attach impor tance to this particular subject. It is only those who magnify matters of minor consequence that will con sider the question as one of much moment. I have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Natural History of Language The present book is what its title implies it is an out line. So far as it is a student's book, it is meant for nothing more than a first general survey of the field. It does not hope to enlighten materially the professional philologist, but only to bring him disciples. Nevertheless, it is no mere compilation. The facts are necessarily in a considerable measure the same facts which have done duty in other works, whether general or special, but the writer trusts that he has employed sufficient independence of thought in weighing various theories against the material, and in offer ing, with all due diffidence, conclusions or speculations of his own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the German Language If this volume contributes somewhat to the better knowledge of a language, which, in my opinion, embodies a larger number of excellencies than any other of ancient or modern times, except the Greek, I Shall feel that my labor has not been in vain. I am not unaware that we have a number of American scholars whose attainments in Germanic Philology are much superior to mine, and who are in position to pro duce a better book than this. As they have not, however, thus far undertaken the task, at least so far as the public is informed, I am led to put forth this modest work in the hope that it may, at least, prepare the way for something more excellent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of the English Language These Outlines are an abstract from a portion of the Course of Lectures delivered in the Class of the English Language in Queen's College, Belfast, which is attended by undergraduates of the first year; but the work has been drawn up with the design of presenting a connected though succinct view of the essentials of its subject, and so as to be adapted for the general reader as well as for being used as a d104-book in any place of education in which English Philology is one of the departments of study. To the series of propositions printed in a larger type, which embody the leading facts constituting the History of the Language, and which perhaps might be advantageously committed to memory by young persons, have been subjoined the more important of those minor and subsidiary particulars brought forward in the Lectures of which I had been accustomed to direct that notes should be taken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline History of the English Language The reception of the writer's larger books on the history of English has suggested one with still fewer details than the Brief History. In this Outline an attempt has been made to chronicle the general facts of our language development, the special influences of different periods, and the more important changes in the forms of words. Espe cially it emphasizes development by natural proc esses. It thus explains much that has often been set down in dogmatic statement only, or sometimes in a manner at variance with historic facts. It should therefore be useful in connection with the study of English grammar and English usage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It seems to solve the diffi culty with which each teacher of Old English is confronted, that of finding a text which is of proper size to use in an ordinary College course in Old English without infringing too much upon time which belongs more particularly to grammatical study and to reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of the English Language The substance of the following chapters was delivered, in the form of County Council lectures, in London during the sessions 1907 - 9, and subsequently at the Summer School, St. Andrew's. It is hoped that the book will serve to introduce students of English to the somewhat neglected background of their studies. In the interest of these a certain amount of specialised material has been introduced, without, it is hoped, impairing the readableness of the book for the general public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the English Language In Part V some advantageous changes in order have been made. The most noticeable Of these is in treating the weak verbs before the strong. This order, while not adopted in the larger work, is quite in accord with the plan of both; namely, to give prominence to those elements of the lan guage which have been most stable and most important. The weak verbs were not only more numerous than the strong in the oldest period, but have increased in number and influence at the expense of the latter. Besides, the present arrangement not only emphasizes the more regular weak class, but also brings together all the less regular classes, an advantage in itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Origin of Language A preliminary objection to the supposition of any natural origin of language has been raised by the modern German school of philos phers, whose theory leads them to deny the possi ility of man having ever existed in a state of mutism. Man is only man by Speech, says W. V. Humboldt, but in order to discover speech he must already be man. And Max Muller, who cites the epigram, adopts the opinion it expresses. Philosophers, he says (lectures on the Science of Language, p. Who imagine that the first man though left to himself would gradually have emerged from a state of mutism and have invented words for every new conception that arose in his mind, forget that man could not by his own power have acquired the faculty of speech, which is the dis tinctive character of mankind, unattained and uh attainable by the mute creation The supposed difficulty is altogether a fallacy arising from a confusion between the faculty of speech and the actual knowledge of language. Phonetics and historical grammar have at last come into their own as legitimate and indispensable elements of the training of foreign language teachers, but a text-book for these subjects adjusted to the complicated needs of our colleges has so far been a desideratum.
