Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Round Kilmarnock: With an Introductory, Sketch of the Town The following pages are a record of some pleasing Rambles in and around the town of Kilmarnock. A considerable portion appeared in the Kilmarnock Standard, and met with such a favourable reception, both at home and abroad, that I have yielded to the solicitation of numerous friends, and now present them to the public in their present form. In doing so, I have carefully revised them and added much new matter suggested by further inquiry, and have endeavoured to make the work as useful, entertaining, instructive, concise, and accurate as possible. In nearly every instance, although one visit is only mentioned, I have repeatedly gone to the places described; but, nevertheless, it must be borne in mind that the Rambler does not rise to the dignity of the historian, therefore he is not to be censured if he omits some things which fall within the province of one who aims at giving a minutely detailed history of a locality or place. The district is one of singularly romantic interest, and replete with memories of patriot and bard; so much so, that the Scotchman must be soulless indeed who can tread its classic ground and pass by the haunts of heroes and the graves of martyrs, and look upon scenes that once inspired the tongue of Coilas bard, without being susceptible to a feeling of pride that the land of Wallace and Eruce is that of his nativity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Translations From the Greek Anthology The following Translations, executed at intervals during the last twenty years, appeared from time to time in Kilmarnock or Glasgow journals. They were undertaken solely as a literary solace, and with no view to subsequent collection and republication. But during late years I have been asked so often, and by so many, to republish them that I at last reluctantly consented. However, I had got jaded, and I shrank from the labour of revision. But I did them at first as carefully as I could, and I am not sure that by revision I should have improved them. Still, if I did not think they had some merit, especially that of fidelity, no solicitation, however urgent, would have induced me to republish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Topographical Account of the District of Cunningham, Ayrshire: Compiled About the Year 1600 The boundaries of Cunningham are quite accurately stated by Pont, and no alte ration of these are known subsequently to have taken place. But, as regards its dimensions, he would seem to have been widely misled as to its breadth - at no point will the district measure over twelve miles across at a right angle in other respects the statement seems correct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect The following trifles are not the production of the Poet, who, with all the advantages of learned art, and perhaps amid the elegancies and idleness of upper life, looks down for a rural theme, with an eye to Theocrites or Virgil. To the Author of this, these and other celebrated names their countrymen are, in their original languages, 'A fountain shut up, and a 'book sealed.' Unacquainted with the necessary requisites for commencing Poet by rule, he sings the sentiments and manners, he felt and saw in himself and his rustic compeers around him, in his and their native language.
