Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of the History of Glasgow Subsequent to the death of St. Mungo, the detail of whose life stands out in the bold relief of historical fact, the records of the see established by him are of the most scanty and misty kind possible. There is no doubt that the sanctity pertaining to the resting-place of the bones of so holy a man, kept the establishment together, and drew around it the village which became the nucleus of the future city. The small community is believed to have suffered from the incursion of the Danes, and possibly also from rievers, who did not come from beyond the seas. But, in reality, for the long period of 500 years, there is no authentic record regarding it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's History of Glasgow: An Encyclopedic Record of the City From the Prehistoric Period to the Present Day The First Edition of the people's history OF glasgow was wholly subscribed Within a few days of announcement, and the Publishers have since refused many subscriptions. It became apparent that there was a certain demand for the little work, as distinct from the desire to possess a First Edition, and the Publishers decided to issue a Second Edition similar in every respect to the first except that the size of the margin is reduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Glasgow Cathedral: A History and Description It may not seem too much to conclude, therefore, that the time has come when an attempt may fairly be made to furnish an adequate history and description of the cathedral. As the only cathedral on the mainland of Scotland which was not ruined at the Reformation, the Church of Glasgow possesses a unique interest. It is also acknowledged that the extant records of the See now available are the most complete, and afford the fullest details of ecclesiastical life in the past, of the records of Scottish religious houses. It sprang, oddly enough, out of a challenge to discover a literary history of Glasgow, and in a weak moment I took up the gauntlet. At first my researches were not inspiriting, but as I persevered the subject broadened, and one eminent name after another came into view. I haunted the libraries, finding clues to the missing authors in biographies, reminiscences, dusty records, and still more dusty newspaper files, and the material ultimately increased to such dimensions that I trembled lest, like poor Philoxene Boyer, who set himself the tremendous task of overtaking everything that had been written about Shakespeare, I might never get beyond the reading. However, the end came when I had read over a thousand books, and sacrificed the leisure of four busy years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Glasgow: A History of the City of Glasgow From the Earliest Times to the Year 1611 The history so designed was accordingly commenced shortly after the publication of the volume referred to, and was brought down as far as the year 1600, but when that period was reached the manuscript was laid aside to make way for preparation of the book on The River Géyda and tire Clyde Burg/25, upon which Sir James bestowed most of his attention in the closing years of his life. It is to be regretted that greater progress was not made in the work, but still it is fortunate that the portion accomplished covers a period of the city's history with which the author was so specially qualified to deal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Old Glasgow Immediately after the issue of my Reminiscences of Printers and Printing (1830 which was printed for private circulation, I was frequently asked and urged to give further remembrances of my native City. The subject was thus kept before me; and, as leisure permitted, memories of over half a century were jotted down, together with brief sketches of Clergymen and Laymen with whom I had been associated or had come in contact. The result is now embodied in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Traditions of Glasgow: Historical, Legendary and Biographical In the following pages we have endeavoured to collate from almost every source available to us, a few of the more graphic and striking sketches of life and character from the History of Glasgow, at its different stages, partly with the view of stimulating our readers to a more systematic and consecutive study of that History, and partly with the view of exhibiting some of the essential principles and underlying forces of the city's progress and prosperity, so that our young readers especially may not become bewildered with the multitudinous and ever increasing details of our city's life and interests, but come into living contact with its heart and spirit, and thus become partakers of its inner life, and conduct their own lives in harmony with its best and noblest traditions. We make no pretence to Originality of research. The only merit we claim is that of careful selec tion and combination; and of having kept steadily in view, the elucidation of what we consider to be the leading and guid ing principles that have gone to make Glasgow what it now undoubtedly is, the Second City in the United Kingdom. Like the Popular History of Glasgow, published seven' years ago, the present work is chiefly intended for the rising generation of our citizens, and to those others who have not had the opportunity of perusing the larger and costlier works that have been written; and to these classes we trust the book will afford some pleasure and instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notices and Documents Illustrative of the Literary History of Glasgow: During the Greater Part of Last Century Several short biographies of Robert and Andrew Foulis have been published, but they seem to have been almost wholly taken from one source, - Lemoine's History of Printing. The late Earl of Buchan, so early as 1795, addressed a letter to Mr John Nicholls, at that time editor of the Gentleman's Magazine, in which he recommends that a more complete memoir of "the Elzevirs of Scotland" should be prepared for one of Pinkerton's biographical works, then publishing. In this letter it is also mentioned that Professors Anderson and Wilson would supply the necessary materials. The Earl seems at length to have taken the task into his own hands, and to have extended his researches to the literary and typographical history of Glasgow generally. In this work, the proposed title of which was "Anecdotes of Printing and Academical Literature at Glasgow," his Lordship was assisted by the late Dr Robert Anderson, but unfortunately it was never completed, - a circumstance the more to be regretted, as a large proportion of the Foulis papers have since perished by fire. The results of their investigations are now in the possession of Miss Anderson, of Edinburgh, by whom they were politely communicated to the editor through the medium of Dr Irving, of the Advocate's Library. About the year 1811 Lord Buchan wrote to Professor Richardson of Glasgow, requesting his reminiscences of the Foulises. The letter written in reply (quoted under the name of "Richardson's Letter") contains much original and interesting information. For access to this document the editor has to acknowledge his obligations to W. R. Gibb, Esquire, into whose possession a copy, with Mr Richardson's interlined corrections, came by descent. The Catalogue of Books has been drawn up principally from the works themselves, and with the assistance of Mr D. Macvean, who turnished a very large mass of materials for it, many of which, and especially the smaller pamphlets, might have been searched for in vain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Stage When I first took up the subject of Glasgow theatricals, I resolved to call it "Days of Dunlop Street." The intention was simply to compress into a few chapters, some personal recollections of certain facts, anecdotes, and individuals which connected themselves with my memory during the very few years I was associated with the Glasgow stage. Reflecting, however, on the title I had chosen, I found it needful to say something about the origin of the theatre itself; how it came to be built at all, and why, of all places in the city, in Dunlop Street. So it occurred to me that it might be interesting to the public to ascertain something not only about the origin and history of the Theatre Royal, Dunlop Street, but likewise about theatres and players so far as they related in any way to Glasgow. So these papers have taken the form of what, I believe, has never been published before - A Brief History of the Glasgow Stage.
