Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rugged beauty of the Cape's landscape has been captured in writing since the days of Henry David Thoreau. Yet few mention the area's architecture, aside from references to the "Cape Cod houses," the basic cottages that the earliest settlers built. From Provincetown at the northern tip to the village of Woods Hole at the opposite end, the residential architecture of Cape Cod encompasses an extensive range of styles. Scattered among the charming Capes are stately Federals and Greek Revivals built for sea captains, detailed Carpenter Gothic cottages constructed by Methodist camp-goers and sprawling Victorian and Shingle-style summer mansions built during the Gilded Age. Journey with Cape Cod native Jaci Conry as she reveals the architectural influences of different eras on this timeless peninsula.

Download or read book History of the Falmouth Road Race, A: Running Cape Cod written by Paul C. Clerici and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven-mile Falmouth Road Race catapulted Cape Cod onto the running radar. Frank Shorter winning gold in the 1972 Olympic marathon inspired local barkeep Tommy Leonard to start a race in his own town. That inaugural race in 1973 garnered fewer than one hundred runners. Participation soon swelled to the thousands, thanks to the success of organizers, volunteers, and talented fields, including running legends like Bill Rodgers and Catherine Ndereba, as well as wheelchair champions Bob Hall and Tatyana McFadden. Follow author Paul C. Clerici along every bend and uphill battle of the race's history from the early stages of the running boom to resetting the road-racing calendar.

Download or read book Falmouth written by Ann Sears and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002-02-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, people have been drawn to Falmouth, the town of the "shining sea," immortalized by Falmouth native Katherine Lee Bates in her poem America, the Beautiful. Quakers, farmers, whaling captains, marine scientists, Coast Guardsmen, summer residents, Portuguese immigrants from the Azores and Cape Verde Islands, vacationers, and retiring World War II veterans have all found a special place in Falmouth. The photographs in Falmouth celebrate these people and the town they have built. Through the eyes of nearly fifty photographers, these views capture the glorious natural and architectural heritage that has defined the three-hundred-and-forty-year history of this Cape Cod community. From the spare lines of the Quaker meetinghouse and the poorhouse to the spires of churches and the elaborate summer "cottages" of Falmouth's golden age in the 1880s, these vintage photographs offer a rich visual tour through the town's history. Unforgettable images of people-whalers posing for the camera on rare trips home, fishermen returning to port, cranberry pickers, and wealthy summer residents playing croquet in summer whites-combine to show the unique community that is Falmouth.

Book Synopsis Early New England by : David A. Weir
Download or read book Early New England written by David A. Weir and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of covenant was at the heart of early New England society. In this singular book David Weir explores the origins and development of covenant thought in America by analyzing the town and church documents written and signed by seventeenth-century New Englanders. Unmatched in the breadth of its scope, this study takes into account all of the surviving covenants in all of the New England colonies. Weir's comprehensive survey of seventeenth-century covenants leads to a more complex picture of early New England than what emerges from looking at only a few famous civil covenants like the Mayflower Compact. His work shows covenant theology being transformed into a covenantal vision for society but also reveals the stress and strains on church-state relationships that eventually led to more secularized colonial governments in eighteenth-century New England. He concludes that New England colonial society was much more "English" and much less "American" than has often been thought, and that the New England colonies substantially mirrored religious and social change in Old England.
