To the eastward of the castle is St. Margaret's Hope; a small bay which derived its name from that Princess having landed here, after having forsaken England to return to Hungary. North Queensferry. Although North Queensferry is in the parish of Dunfermline, yet we shall treat of it as belonging to that of Inverkeithing, being the most natural arrangement. Indeed the Scotish counties and parishes are divided in such a capricious manner, as if the divisors had meant to put to scorn every principle of geometry. When this passage first began to be generally used, is beyond the reach of record. It can be traced, however, to the middle of the eleventh century, from its present name. Upon this name Chalmers has the following remarks.--"There is no proof that this name had been imposed during the reign of Margaret, who died in 1093. There is positive evidence, that the name did not exist, during the reign of her youngest son, David I. j for, when he granted this Ferry to the monks of Dunfermline, he called it "Pasmgium de Inverkelhin.'' It first appeared under the name of Queensferry, in a charter ef Malcolm IY. in 1164, when was granted to the monks of Scone, and their men, free passage, ad porium rcgince. It is easy to perceive, then, that the name of Queetuferry is a mere modern translation of a Latin description, during prior times. The ancient Gaelic name of the place was, according to Sir James Dalrymple, Ardehinnechenam." D. 1069 1878: Interspersed With Explanatory Notes, Memorabilia, and Numerous Illustrative Engravings A great many years have elapsed since the writer began to collect materials for the annals OF dunfermline, his native city. His object was to arrange events and notanda in chronological order, as he was convinced that a much clearer conception of the rise and progress of a town would be obtained under such an arrangement, than by the method usually adopted in compiling such works. The writer never had the slightest idea of publishing his notanda. They were written for his own private use for reference. On showing them to a number of his archaeological and other friends, they expressed perhaps a too favourable opinion of their contents, and strongly urged him to pass them through the press. For some years he refused to do so, but their continued solicitations over came his opposition, and he resolved to prepare his collection for publication. The materials composing the annals have been collected chie y from original sources - from the Chartularies of Scottish Abbeys and religious houses - from the early and modern Histories of Scotland - from various scarce topographical and similar works - from the manuscript Records of the Burgh, the Guildry, the Regality, and the Parish - from Charters in the Burgh Charter Chest - from the Journals of several of the Incorporated Trades of the Burgh - from title-deeds of old houses - from old and modern Magazines and Newspapers, and from letters written by old inhabitants. A list of the works consulted by the writer for the annals will be found at the end of the Addenda. It is not to be expected that a work, consisting of such a large mass of heterogeneous materials, drawn from such a variety of sources, which are in many instances con icting, can be entirely free from slips of the pen. The annals would require to go, like other similar works, through several editions to get the Errata cleared away, and the Omissa filled in.
