Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Confession, or the Dogma of Confession Vindicated From the Attacks of Heretics and Infidels To the objections of the young lawyer, Father Guil lois replied in a series of letters, which originally were not intended for publication. He begins by demonstrating that confession was always in use, especially among the Jews; that it was in use also amongst the pagans; that it was instituted by Our Saviour; that it has always been practised in the Church, both in the West, and amongst the schismaticsof the East. He demonstrates from reason that it was impossible for men to establish confession, and, finally, shows the utility of this divine institution and refutes the objections advanced against it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the History of Confession Until It Developed Into Auricular Confession A. D. 1215 To my brethren, the Clergy and lay-members of the Christian Church, I offer this Treatise on the History of Confession in the hope that, by following the sequence of the authorities in the Church, they may gain a more sure and correct knowledge of the doctrine of Confession as to the occasion of its practice during the first twelve centuries and to the lack of any necessity during that period of revealing to a Priest all the evil thoughts and lesser sins, of which a member of the society of Christians may have been guilty. I have endeavoured to put forward facts of history rather than theories, based upon the teaching of the Church which gained ascendancy in subsequent ages. I have carefully verified all the passages put forward except the few marked with an asterisk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination Into the Doctrine and Practice of Confession I have thought it best not to load my pages with numerous references to patristic books (not on the shelves of ordinary libraries) in support of facts, the authorities for which can be found almost exhaustively, certainly abundantly and sufficiently, in the pages of such works as Bingham and Usher, and the note in the translation of Tertullian in the Library of the Fathers. I have, therefore, referred my readers to these books, where they will find not only references to the original works, but generally full length quota tions of the passages referred to. Download or read book The Dark Box written by John Cornwell and published by Basic Books (AZ). This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confession is a crucial ritual of the Catholic Church, offering absolution of sin and spiritual guidance to the faithful. Yet this ancient sacrament has also been a source of controversy and oppression, culminating, as prize-winning historian John Cornwell reveals in The Dark Box, with the scandal of clerical child abuse. Drawing on extensive historical sources, contemporary reports, and first-hand accounts, Cornwell takes a hard look at the long evolution of confession. The papacy made annual, one-on-one confession obligatory for the first time in the 13th century. In the era that followed, confession was a source of spiritual consolation as well as sexual and mercenary scandal. During the 16th century, the Church introduced the confession box to prevent sexual solicitation of women, but this private space gave rise to new forms of temptation, both for penitents and confessors. Yet no phase in the story of the sacrament has had such drastic consequences as a historic decree by Pope Pius X in 1910. In reaction to the spiritual perils of the new century, Pius sought to safeguard the Catholic faithful by lowering the age at which children made their first confession from their early teens to seven, while exhorting all Catholics to confess frequently instead of annually. This sweeping, inappropriately early imposition of the sacrament gave priests an unprecedented and privileged role in the lives of young boys and girls—a role that a significant number would exploit in the decades that followed. A much-needed account of confession’s fraught history, The Dark Box explores the sources of the sacrament’s harm and shame, while recognizing its continuing power to offer consolation and reconciliation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Confession of Faith: With Questions for Theological Students and Bible Classes Dr. Mitchell proves that the Confession was conformed in the order of its chapters and the type Of its doctrine more to the Articles of the Irish Church than to any other model. These were drawn up by Archbishop Ussher in 1615, when he was pro fessor of divinity in Trinity College, Dublin. The correspond ence of the Larger Catechism is also very striking with the Body of Christian Doctrine, a compilation attributed to Ussher when a youth, and circulated in the Westminster Assembly. Book Synopsis The Doctrine of Confession in the Church of England (Classic Reprint) by : T. T. Carter
Download or read book The Doctrine of Confession in the Church of England (Classic Reprint) written by T. T. Carter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Confession in the Church of England No question affecting the Church of England can be fairly considered, except by connecting together its earlier and its later history, as presenting different phases of one living body, holding in substance the same truth. It was not the purpose of the English Reformation to ignore the traditions of the past, the changes which then took place being avowedly grounded on an appeal to an earlier standard. Its object, as the oft-repeated declarations of its leaders abundantly testify, was to correct abuses, and remove novelties of doctrine or practice, which had grown up during the middle ages at variance with primitive revelation. It is but one instance of this fundamental principle, that our existing formularies are framed upon the ancient service books of the Catholic Church. They profess to be, and are, at least in their essential features, a reconstruction of its traditionary system; and only on this ground they claim our allegiance. Download or read book Confession written by Patrick W. Carey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confession is a history of penance as a virtue and a sacrament in the United States from about 1634, when Catholicism arrived in Maryland, to 2015, fifty years after the major theological and disciplinary changes initiated by the Second Vatican Council. Patrick W. Carey argues that the Catholic theology and practice of penance, so much opposed by the inheritors of the Protestant Reformation, kept alive the biblical penitential language in the United States at least until the mid-1960s when Catholic penitential discipline changed. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American Catholics created institutions that emphasized, in opposition to Protestant culture, confession to a priest as the normal and almost exclusive means of obtaining forgiveness. Preaching, teaching, catechesis, and parish revival-type missions stressed sacramental confession and the practice became a widespread routine in American Catholic life. After the Second Vatican Council, the practice of sacramental confession declined suddenly. The post-Vatican II history of penance, influenced by the Council's reforms and by changing American moral and cultural values, reveals a major shift in penitential theology; moving from an emphasis on confession to emphasis on reconciliation. Catholics make up about a quarter of the American population, and thus changes in the practice of penance had an impact on the wider society. In the fifty years since the Council, penitential language has been overshadowed increasingly by the language of conflict and controversy. In today's social and political climate, Confession may help Americans understand how far their society has departed from the penitential language of the earlier American tradition, and consider the advantages and disadvantages of such a departure.
