Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Civilization, Vol. 2 of 7 The traveler whose journeyings have led him through a Wilderness dubious and uncertain in his course, with here and there a few hamlets or scattered habitations, feels an inward joy as he approaches the populous city. So also the student of civilization, after he has traced its uncertain course along the valleys of the Tigris and the Euphrates, and up that of the bountiful Nile, and along the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, feels gladsome and joyous as he finds himself under the arch of Grecian skies. There is hardly a thought in the human mind, or an emotion or passion in the human soul, that cannot awake in Greece a kindred echo. Great and glorious in her heroic achieve ments, deep and diversified in her varied philosophy, bright and beautiful in her creations of art, she challenges the admiration of mankind, and stands forth the paragon of ancient time. It has, until quite recently, been mainly her torch that has shed a somewhat feeble light along the valleys of the Tigris, the Euphrates and the Nile, and along the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, and well, therefore, may it burn with a fadeless lustre as its light glances over its own hills and valleys, and ascends into the clear azure of its own beautiful skies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Civilization, Vol. 6 of 7 Thus it is that society, in all its different phases, reveals to the outward world what had its birth in the inward. All the inner promptings of our nature, all the thoughts, feelings, instincts, propensities, passions and sentiments, whose ceaseless action goes to make up the history Of our inner life, and which do not endanger the existence Of society itself, will, in some form or other, become revealed to the outward world under the auspices Of society. And this revelation, carefully noted, will, at any given epoch, constitute society a very excellent barometer, to determine what are the workings Of the inward man, what the then condition Of civilization itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Civilization, Vol. 1 of 7 To fully comprehend the nature of a work, to judge of it fairly, we should be, to some extent, in sympathy with its author. To appreciate his labors, we should know the circumstances in which he was placed, the disadvantages he had to overcome, the obstacles he had to surmount, the positions he filled, his modes of thought, his methods of study, his fitness for authorship in temperament and character. These we may gather in part from his book; but only in part. The writer of history deals with the acts of the outer world, rather than with his inner-self. V He must, therefore, exhibit somewhat of the nature and tendency of his mind, his Opinions and judgment. He must breathe into it much of his own character; yet, from such imperfect gleanings we can form but a limited con ception of the man. It will not, therefore, be deemed out of taste to give a short sketch of the life of Prof. Amos Dean, the author of the present work. By his many friends such a narration will be welcomed, while it may not be devoid of interest to the general reader and student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civilization, Vol. 2: An Historical Review of Its Elements Many of the early industrial achievements of man were wrought in stone, and have in consequence been well preserved. Numerous examples of this ancient handiwork have of late years been discovered, the most archaic being rudely chipped stones, the next in order highly polished stones of later origin, which served as the warlike weapons and the household im plements of the rude tribes of primitive man. At a still later period a far greater diversity of productions came into use, of which but few relics exist. But these few suffice to Show that the making of textile fabrics and pottery, the use of brick and stone in architecture, and other important arts, were of very remote origin. The golden age of Latin; its speedy corruption and the causes of it; the Eastern genius of contemplation; the Greek tendency to speculation and the Latin love for action dominated antiquity; these three elements passed on to modern times by means of the Vulgate; history of the work undertaken by St. Jerome, and examination of its.
