Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Typhoid and of Typhus Fever I may simply say, here, that their authors describe, prin cipally, a fever, or form of fever, which is rarely met with in this country; and that they do not represent the actual state of our knowledge upon this subject. It must be regarded as especially unfortunate, that, until within a few years, the greater part of our information, relating to continued fever, has been derived from writers, who have treated, mostly, and under the same name as that gene rally used by ourselves, of a disease, or form of disease, differing, in many important respects, from that which is most common with us; and, that, in this way, so great a degree of confusion has been introduced into our notions of fever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tabular History and Analysis of All the Undoubted Cases of Typhoid and Typhus Fever: Treated at the Boston City Hospital, From the Date of Its Opening, June 1, 1864, to June 1, 1869 In the preparation of these tabular sketches, I am greatly indebted to the intelligent and willing assist ance of Dr. 0. W. Doe, formerly one of the House Officers of the Hospital, whose labor in originally col leeting the notes from the clinical records is hereby gratefully acknowledged. I have myself carefully reviewed and revised the tables, inspecting each and every case, and comparing it with the hospital books, so that I can personally vouch for the accuracy of their details as far as they go. I have endeavored to cull from my more extended notes the essential and se lient points in each case in so far as the materials at hand would permit, to give, in briefest phrase, the history of the patient while in Hospital, in such man ner as to afford an adequate portraiture of the disease, and at the same time not too much encumber the page. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typhoid Fever and Typhus Fever The excellence of the series of monographs issued under the editorship of Professor Nothnagel has been recognized by all who are sufficiently familiar with German to read these works, and the series has found a not inconsiderable proportion of its distribution in this and other English-speaking countries. I have so often heard regret expressed by those whose lack of familiarity with German kept these works beyond their reach, that I was glad of the opportunity to assist in the bringing out of an English edition. It was especially gratifying to find that the prominent specialists who were invited to co-operate by editing separate volumes were as interested as myself in the matter of publication of an English edition. These editors have been requested to make such additions to the original articles as seem necessary to them to bring the articles fully up to date and at the same time to adapt them thoroughly to the American or English reader. The names of the editors alone suffice to assure the profession that in the additions there will be preserved the same high standard of excellence that has been so conspicuous a feature in the original German articles. In all cases the German author has been consulted with regard to the publication of this edition of his work, and has given specific consent. In one case only it was unfortunately necessary to substitute for the translation of the German article an entirely new one by an American author, on account of a previous arrangement of the German author to issue a translation of his article separately from this series. With this exception the Nothnagel series will be presented intact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Reports on Continued Fever: Based on Analyses of One Hundred and Sixty-Four Cases; With Remarks on the Management of Continued Fever; The Identity of Typhus and Typhoid Fever; Relapsing Fever; Diagnosis, Etc Dr. Jenner's results during the preparation of these reports had it been practicable. The second paper following the third report, relates to Relaps ing fever, and presents the results of an analysis of fifteen cases, among those observed during the autumn of 1850 and the winter of 1851-52 characterized by the occurrence of relapses, and, as the results of the analysis show, by other of the features which are said to belong to an affection re cently described by Dr. Jenner. And others, as a distinct form of continued fever. The two papers just mentioned have also appeared in the Buffalo Medical Journal, and cover seventeen pages of the following work. Finally, in collecting the foregoing reports, etc, for publication in the present volume, the author concluded to add a memoir on the Transporta tion and diffusion, by contagion, of Typhoid fever, exemplified in its occur rence at North Boston, Erie Co.' The reasons for inserting the memoir in this volume will be found in the propriety of the connection with the prece ding pages so far as relates to the nature of the subject, and in the interest and importance which, in the author's estimation, belong to the facts therein contained considered in their hearing on the question of contagion. So much for the origin and preparation of the work. The manner of its publication should now, in justice to the author, be explained. During the publication of the first report in the Buffalo Medical Journal, the author was desirous of having it issued separately, and an edition of a thousand copies was accordingly struck ofi', as successive portions appeared in the Jour nal. A small part of the report remaining to be prepared, the edition was not issued prior to the following summer, and then deferred in order to include the second report. Again, it was deferred until the present summer in order to embrace the third report. The printing of the volume has thus been going on, intermittingly, during the past three years, being executed only as fast as successive portions were inserted in the Medical Journal. This must be an apology, not only for some typographical blemishes which may be discovered, but for defects in the arrangement of the matter contained in the work. Were it proposed to prepare a treatise on Continued fever after the three reports had been published, based on the facts therein contained, the plan adapted would be much more convenient for the reader, and alto gether better. The results of the different analyses might then be brought together, and the work condensed by excluding some details which might with advantage be dispensed with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typhoid Fever and Its Abortive Treatment The objects that are sought to be accomplished by the issuance of this book are: First, to present to the members of the medical profession so much evidence of the truth of the startling declaration that typhoid fever can be aborted as will induce a large number of physicians to give antiseptic medicine a fair and faithful trial in this disease - the most destructive to adolescent life of all of the acute specific infections - a disease which is both preventable and curable, but which is not only not excluded from, but has been practically invited to invade every community, and has hitherto been allowed to pursue its course uninterrupted by any scientific or efficacious treatment second, to give such explicit direc tions as will enable all physicians to so intelligently apply the principles of antiseptic medicine to the cure of typhoid fever that they may secure for their patients the least inconvenience and suffering, the shortest duration of illness, and the lowest possible death rate third, and finally, to impress upon the minds of the members of this medical profession the enormity of the crime which is committed by all communities that pour their excrement laden sewage into our fresh water lakes and rivers, in violation of all sanitary principles, of genuine humane ness and even of common decency; to the subversion of all efforts at the prophylaxis of typhoid fever, cholera, and other diseases.
