Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Use of Hymns and Hymn-Tunes This book is the outgrowth of my own needs, as a teacher of practical theology. I desired a text-book from which my students might obtain a comprehensive knowledge of the history and use of sacred song, without being burdened with those technical details which a beginner has neither the time to master nor the ability to understand. I also desired a book in which the study of hymns and of tunes was combined. No such book was at hand, and for several years I was compelled to refer my classes to various authors, some in hymnology, others in church music; supplementing their studies with explanatory lectures. This, however, became more and more unsatisfactory, and I therefore determined to supply my own needs. In so doing I hoped to supply also the needs of others and to furnish many besides theological students with an acceptable and useful guide to a large and increasingly interesting subject. I have therefore included extended notice only of authors and composers of the first rank, or whose work bears some vital relation to the development of the hymn or of the hymn-tune. The volume is intended to be first of all a text-book, though I hope it may serve other useful purposes and be greatly blessed of Him whose praises we sing to those who would sing them "in a nobler, sweeter song." In prosecuting it he has had the friendship of some of the most popular and intelligent writers of church music and gospel hymns. That the volume may prove helpful both in the Praise Service and the Christian home, is the author's earnest desire. He could not include the history of all popular hymn-tunes, but only that of such as seem to best meet the present experience of the church and the wants of private devotion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymn and Tune Book for the Church and the Home This book is a revised edition of the Hymn and Tune Book published by the American Unitarian Associa tion in 1868. The hymns and tunes that could best be spared are replaced by hymns and music, new and old, gathered from the ample resources supplied within the last ten years by composers and compilers of all denominations in England and America. To all whose contributions and labors have helped to enrich this book, our obligations are gratefully acknowledged. While many hymns have been restored to their original text, some slight changes, established by familiar usage, have been accepted without note. Hymns with substantial varia tions from the original are indicated by the sign 1 attached to the author's name. The collection has been made catholic and inclusive for varying moods and experiences, and for manifold phases of thought. Its aim is to present within moderate size, and with appropriate music, the best hymns in the English tongue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymn-Tunes and Their Story Considering the general popularity of hymn-tunes, and also the fact that they provide a form of music which all can understand and in which all can take a part, it is rather remarkable that no attempt has yet been made to give some account of their history in a connected narrative. A great deal of work has been done in this direction by various diligent students, entailing a vast amount of original work and research, and it seems a great pity that the results of their labours should be hidden away in magazines and papers extending over a considerable number of years, and many of which are now inaccessible. The numerous inquiries that appear from time to time in the various newspapers and periodicals seem to show that a widespread interest is taken in the history of our tunes, and it is hoped that this first attempt to provide material for such a history will prove acceptable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymn Tunes: Being Further Contributions to the Hymnody of the Church Since 1860 the character of the hymns authorized and used in the Church has greatly changed. Devout servants of God have been moved to write hymns and spiritual songs. By no means confining themselves to these old metres; hymns 'which have won a place amongst those in use throughout the Church wherever the English tongue is known. These hymns came not altogether, but one by one, as gifted men were moved, As they came, and were found to be useful in the public worship of the church', appropriate music was required, and so there has grown up within the past quarter of a century a number of hymn tune writers who have done what they felt moved to do to supply this want; Dykes and Smart and Hopkins and Stainer and Barnby and others. Today the best known, and the most generally sung, and the all but universally favorite hymns in use in our Church, are the new hymns, set to the new music.
