Download or read book Miscellanies written by Henry Fielding and published by Wesleyan Edition of the Works. This book was released on 1997 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Three of Henry Fielding's Miscellanies, first published as a three-volume set in 1743, consists in its entirety of a major work of fiction, The history of the Life of the Late Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great. Jonathan Wild takes its title from the `thief-taker' and gang-leader of that name who was hanged in 1725, but in Fielding's hands, the history of Wild is transformed into a mock-hostorical work of sustained irony aimed at all who would be `great men'. The general introduction to this edition sets the novel against its historical and biographical background and argues against the view, common since the mid-nineteenth century, that it is a personal satire directed at the figure of Sir Robert Walpole. In both the general and the textual introductions, the editors also offer a fresh view on questions about the date and history of the work's composition. Full explanatory notes and commentary place Fielding's allusions and details in their contemporary context. As in previous volumes of the Weslyan Edition, this provides critical, unmodernized text, based on the Greg-Bowers `Rationale of Copy-text'. The version is that of the first edition, with an appendix giving all variants in wording and presentation in the 1754 revision. In his introduction the textual editor lays out the rationale for his choice of version. This volume also includes, for the first time in modern edition, Fielding's list of subscribers to the Miscellanies, along with detailed biographical notes and an analysis of the subscription list by the textual editor.
Book Synopsis The Speculum of Archbishop Thomas Secker by : Thomas Secker
Download or read book The Speculum of Archbishop Thomas Secker written by Thomas Secker and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Speculum compiled by Archbishop Thomas Secker (1758-68) is a major source for our understanding of the position of the Church of England in the mid-eighteenth century. A parish by parish digest of the returns submitted to the archbishop between 1758 and 1761, in the main for the diocese of Canterbury but including several others. It contains very full information on such matters as the size and social structure of the parishes; the names and qualifications of the clergy; their wealth; and their relations with Roman Catholics and protestant dissenters. Part of the significance of the Speculum is its witness of the pastoral pressure applied by Secker, allowing the historian to assess how far an energetic archbishop was ableto improve the standards of pastoral provision in the parishes under his care. This edition has attempted to preserve the spelling and capitalisation of the original, and editorial notes give biographical information on the large number of persons mentioned in the text, as well as identifying other textual allusions. JEREMY GREGORY is Lecturer in History at the University of Northumbria.

Book Synopsis Ecologues, Epitaphs and Sonnets by : Barnabe Googe
Download or read book Ecologues, Epitaphs and Sonnets written by Barnabe Googe and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1989-12-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When at the age of twenty-three Barnabe Googe allowed the publication of his Ecologues, Epitaphs, and Sonnets, he became the first English author to publish personal poetry during his lifetime. His ecologues are, with Barclay's, the first examples of the form in English, anticipating in several respects Spenser's Shepheardes Calendar. He was the first writer to introduce into English literature Montemayor's pastoral romance Diana, later an important source for Sidney, Spenser, and Shakespeare. His short lyrics, many of them occasional, provides an image of the society of the time, and have been admired by modern critics as representative of the native plain style. The small volume of 1563 was last edited by Edward Arber in 1871. In this new edition Judith Kennedy offers a modernized text, with introduction, commentary, and textual apparatus. The volume has been designed for students with little knowledge of the period, offering them a readable text and inviting investigation into other aspects of the period and the ways in which it relates to later Elizabethan literature. For scholars, the textual appendix provides the necessary assurances of the reliability of the text; the network of literary and personal associations explored in the introduction and notes will also be of considerable interest.
