With this end in view I shall discuss the Historical Method in the Study of Religion, and thereby introduce you to the character of the work that falls distinctively to my hand as a teacher in Cobb Divinity School. Religion Defined A glance at our latest catalog will show that my department proposes for itself no less a task than the study of the science of religion. It thereby regards religion as a science, and so must take it in a broad sense. Consequently a comprehensive definition of religion is essential to further enquiry, but this is not easily obtained. True, there are numerous definitions already in existence but most of them are inadequate - they are either not broad enough to include all varieties of faith, or not comprehensive enough to embrace all the elements in a single variety. If, for example, you say religion is the worship of Jehovah you have excluded some who are religious though they are neither Jews nor Christians; and if you call it the worship of any being or beings regarded by the individual as superhuman the definition is still unsatisfactory, for worship is not really religion but is merely one of its forms of expression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of the Christian Religion The present volume has been prepared in recognition of the situation above indicated. In order to do justice to the specialized character of scholarship, a group of men has been asked to co-operate, each contributing an exposition of the problems and the methods of study in the field in which he himself is competent to speak. There has, of course, been no attempt to secure absolute uniformity of views. The only common presuppositions of the various portions are the acceptance of the historical method and the belief that the interpretation of Christianity must be in accord with the rightful tests of scientific truth fulness and actual vitality in the modern world. If certain diversities of opinion appear, the volume will only reflect the spirit of freedom which prevails in theological scholarship today as well as in other fields of research. It is a hopeful sign, however, that the historical method, with all its freedom, yet induces a typical attitude and spirit, so that a course of study dominated by this point of view will attain a consistency which may form the basis for positive convictions concerning Christianity and for fruitful constructive work in the church of Jesus Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Religion We cannot properly understand things (men, events, beliefs, practices) unless we view them in their context, in the whole of which they are part, in the light of the preceding and following stages. The ape and the man are remarkably alike - or unlike - it depends upon the particular group of details (resemblances or differences) and the only critical estimate will be based upon both groups of evidence, and will refer the ape and the man to their environments and to their place in evolution. So, too, a religion (e.g. Christianity) may have remark able resemblances with other religions whether (1) now current, or (2) historically prior to it but it would be unwise to base an estimate upon those features alone or upon the differences alone. And if we proceed on these principles we must apply the same method to ourselves what we condemn in others may be virtually identical with something in ourselves, and what we think meritorious in our friends may be found in our foes. The fundamental resemblances will be obscured because of the fundamental differences, or vice versa. And if we pursue this further and compare men who are warmly enthusiastic and keenly zealous, we should find most interesting points of resemblance, so that the fiery religionist and the violent rationalist would have certain fundamental psychical similarities although their bodies of beliefs and practices might differ fundamentally. 0f. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Study of Theology, Vol. 1 The history of the study of Theology is Theological Encyclopaedia placed in its historical frame and order. It traces the study of Theology from the beginning until the present time. There is a study of Theology in all the higher religions. This book does not propose to go beyond the Christian religion. It is the history of the study of Christian Theology. It begins, therefore, with the study of Theology by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Christian Theology may be studied with regard either to its contents or to its forms. The study of the contents of Christian Theology in their historic mould belongs to the department of Church History, as the history of the Christian Religion, of Christian Doctrine, of Christian Institutions, and so on. Theological Encyclopaedia has to do only with the forms of Christian Theology, its methods, the organisation of the various departments of which it is composed, and its literature. The history of the study of Christian Theology is a history of its methods, its disciplines, and its literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Religious History Semitic religions according to the formula in which I have had some part, ought to exhibit the religions of antiquity under an aspect somewhat different from that which the Symbolic school and the purely Hellenic school show by their works. The unity of the indo-european race, in opposition to the Semitic race, acknowledged in their reli gion, as in their language, will serve hereafter as a basis for the history of the religions Of antiquity. This does not touch the doctrine of the article in question, but it merely explains the silence I'have preserved with regard to recent discoveries which constitute an epoch in science. If I have not tried to fill up this omission, it is because the discoveries of which I speak have not yet been suffi ciently matured for presentation to the public as definite results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Religion Needless to add that in so large and inexhaustible a field a bibliography will only have practical value for the readers for whom this series is intended if it represents a selection out of the great mass. With few exceptions I have read and consulted the works, monographs, and articles enumerated, and recom mend them therefore from personal knowledge of their contents. With a view of presenting the Bibliography in a more systematic fashion, it has been divided up into sections corresponding so far as possible to the main divisions of the book itself. The preference has been given to publications in English, though of course German, French, and Dutch works come in for a large share. My very dear and esteemed friend, Mrs. Caspar Wister, has placed me under lasting obligations by kindly undertaking to read one proof of the entire work; and as I go over the pages for the last time, I find everywhere traces of her most skilful revision. The index has been prepared by Miss Katherine S. Leiper, and I wish to take this opportunity of thanking her for the intelligent care and painstaking accuracy with which she has carried out what was necessarily an arduous task. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Religion and Theology the Church: In Idea and in History "Studies" is to me an old and familiar friend in the title of a book. I remember submitting a question, directly suggested by a first literary project, to a Professor, who later became Principal, in a northern university, viz.: - "What name would he give to a book made up of scientific attempts to conceive and represent formulated ideas, not, indeed, according to their place in a system, but in the isolation which was independence?" Without hesitation the answer came back: "would call it 'Studies.'" And when years later a kindred question was submitted, a kindred answer was returned. The name was not intended to qualify the ideas interpreted but the attempt at their interpretation; and was equal to essay in the old sense, better represented by assay than by any other modern term. This does not denote "a written composition shorter and less elaborate than a treatise," but simply an attempt to examine the ideas by their interpretation. And this is the meaning which is attached to the word "Studies." This book may seem too dogmatic to be fitly characterized by so undogmatic a name. Though I confess that its basis is formed by a collection of scattered papers, yet it has become a treatise on the church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Study: Its Principals, Methods and History; Together With a Catalogue of Books of Reference The author has aimed to present a guide to Bib lical Study for the intelligent layman, as well as the theological student and minister of the Gospel. It is his conviction that the scientific study of the Word of God should be combined with a devout use of it. Piety and scholarship must be wedded in order to the best results. It is a misfortune that they should ever be divorced. A great revival of Biblical Study is now in progress in Great Britain and America. It is all-important that this revival should be guided in the right direction. Scholasticism and Rationalism are alike perilous. Scholasticism is largely responsible for the neglect of a scholarly study of the Scriptures for a century in Eng. Lish-speaking lands. (see pp. 123, seq., 145, seq., 149. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prolegomena of the History of Religions I do not doubt that all real students of the History of Religion have by this time read M. Beville's book in the original. But the interest in the Science of Religion is spreading rapidly and widely, and there are large classes of English readers who seldom see a book which is published abroad, and who are more easily reached by an English translation. I hope, therefore, that M. Beville's book in its English trans lation will be read even more widely in England than it has been and I trust that it may help to remedy the injury which has of late been done to the Science of Religion in this country, both by its indiscriminate enemies and by its indiscriminate admirers.
