Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Development of Religion in China The reflections on the Religion and History of China contained in the following pages give the substance, somewhat expanded and revised, of an address delivered on the 8th and 9th of December, 1913, to the students of the Caermarthen Presbyterian College. In submitting them now to the indulgence of a wider public the author possibly owes a few words of explanation to his readers, who may, perhaps, in the light of later happenings, find some of the judgments over confident. A year ago China seemed to be in the melting-pot; to-day it is our Western European world whose faiths, institutions, and traditions are upon their trial. Yet perhaps the only explanation needed is simply to say that these pages were written before the War. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Chinese A place as a world-religion must, without hesi tation, be assigned to it on account of the vast number of its adherents. It has extended the circle of its influence far beyond the boundaries of the empire proper, and has gained access, together with Chinese culture generally, into Korea, Japan, Manchuria, and Turkestan, as well as into Indo China, though, of course, in modified forms. Hence a proper understanding of the religions of East Asia in general requires in the first place an under standing of the religion of China. For instance, Canonge instead of Kanuj, and doubtless many others in the same category. Not knowing any West Asian language, I take the spelling which occurs in the best books I have consulted, some of which are more up to date than others; or I adopt the usual spelling. I have at least tried to be consistent in my irregularity; and, after all, in a book on Religion, scientific spelling is not of the essence. In Chinese words, of course, I profess to be right according to my own ideas of what is right; though even here I occasionally use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophies and Religions of China A mlssing la - In the same way therefore that the many Chinese who want to succeed in Western affairs are beginning to make our philosophies and religions a prominent feature of their study, so those among ourselves who wish to be first on the field ready to reap the best advantages and realize the highest benefits which the opening up of China will place in their power, must spare no pains to become fully conversant with all that China holds most sacred on these two important topics. We must remember that however lightly we may regard them the Chinese see a vast fund of meaning in the utterances of their philosophers, whom they look up to with the deepest reverence, and that they feel a real power in their different forms of religion, which have borne so large a part in influencing the lives of themselves and their ancestors for untold generations. Not only can we not afford to ignore these studies, but we shall find in them one of the missing links in the chain which is to draw the East and West into closer connection, and expand their mutual advantages. The sooner therefore that this link can be supplied and adjusted in its proper place the better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State Religion of China: By Inquirer The next point to this, is to state what is the relation of the designa tions Ti and Shang-ti to the Being who is styled Heaven. Kang Hi's Dictionary and the Book of History defines it thus, Shang-ti is Heaven The Fung-shen Book says Shang-ti is another name for Heaven. 1 In the commentaries on the Classics these definitions are repeated very frequently - sometimes in one form, and sometimes in the other. Shang-ti is Heaven. Shang-ti and Heaven are one and the same. Shang-ti is another name for Heaven. In his Lectures, at' p. 10, Dr. Legge says Heaven is styled Shang-ti, and as frequently Ti alone, without the Shang. Throughout the Shu and the Shih, the ancient Books of History and Poetry, the names Thien, Ti and Shang ti are constantly interchanged, in the course of the same chapter or paragraph, often in the same sentence. Dr. Chalmers says Confucius did not initiate the practice of calling Heaven personified Shang-ti. The usage came down with the language from unfathomable antiquity. Terms Simplified, p. 58. Dr. Medhurst or Shang-ti is said to be synonymous with Heaven. Sec Inquiry, p. 19. I concur entirely in this general consensus of the usage of Shang-ti as another name for or the synonym of Heaven. Heaven is the name of the Being, and Ti and Shang-ti are used as other names to designate that Being. I call attention to the fact that it is not once intimated in any book, or stated by any native or foreign authority that Heaven is another name for Shang-ti. Book excerpt: This book is part of an initiative in cooperation with renowned Chinese publishers to make fundamental, formative, and influential Chinese thinkers available to a western readership, providing absorbing insights into Chinese reflections of late, and offering a chance to grasp today’s China. In their influential book Handbook of the History of Religions in China, Zhongjian Mou and Jian Zhang present a panorama of the religions existing in China through time. In their fascinating History, they delineate the emergence and development of Daoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam, and Christianity and explore the roles they played in Chinese society and the interrelations between them. In China, also due to the encompassing Confucian idea of “living together harmoniously while maintaining differences,” religions—including newly arrived ones—came closer together than anywhere else in the world and reached a unique level of peaceful societal coexistence. Despite many frictions and conflicts, communication and reconciliation were indisputably predominant in China throughout history. Buddhism was peacefully introduced into China and, later on, a harmonious, symbiotic syncretism of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism developed—an exemplary process of how a diverse set of different religions can complement each other and contribute to a better life.
